To be irritated by the phrase ‘only x more sleeps until....’

I really cringe when I hear / read a grown person say it’s only ‘x more sleeps until I (go on holiday, do whatever). It’s something a toddler / young child would say IMHO ....

It's frightening how angry we all get about things that don't matter! I think 'sleeps' is evocative of the excitement we felt as children and is used in that way so it really doesn't bother me.

I'm old and this phrase was NEVER used when I was young. I managed to grasp the concept of how many days there were until something happened.
It makes me cringe.
Everything is so dumbed down...

Actually that's one that doesn't make me cringe unlike other expressions such as "making memories".

See also “holibobs” and “famalam Agreed, also hate these.

HopelessSemantics · 10/08/2020 09:21

@Cooroo is it frightening? No it doesn't matter but people are just expressing something annoying.

This whole "everyone happy all the time, never express any negative feelings" thing is so unhealthy.

I agree an awful phrase and should be never used. Some phrases and words have had their time.
