To be irritated by the phrase ‘only x more sleeps until....’

I really cringe when I hear / read a grown person say it’s only ‘x more sleeps until I (go on holiday, do whatever). It’s something a toddler / young child would say IMHO ....

Cringeworthy isn't it?

Watdafark · 09/08/2020 20:53

Any grown adult using this phrase will be sent to the gallows without trial when I seize power.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 09/08/2020 20:54

This is only appropriate to say in the run up to Christmas & even then only if you still believe in Santa

Louiselouie0890 · 09/08/2020 20:55

How miserable 😂

HansBanans · 09/08/2020 20:56

@Watdafark you'll need to catch me first! 😂 the countdown is all part of the excitement!

SmileTolerantly · 09/08/2020 20:56

I think it’s gained common currency because it’s a really useful innovation. “N more days until” is often ambiguous and leads to all sorts of confusion. “N more sleeps” is completely clear unless you’re a night worker or about to fly intercontinental.

Watdafark · 09/08/2020 21:00

@HansBanans I'm a very fast runner. Grin

Fear not, you will be spared if you use it when speaking with a child under the age of 12. Otherwise, OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!

Agreed and only if there are fewer than 7 sleeps!
WitchQueenofDarkness · 09/08/2020 21:01

Awful isn’t it!

Rose789 · 09/08/2020 21:01

I love counting down sleeps to things. Especially to Christmas.... 142 sleeps to go, 142 sleeps til Santa. You’re welcome

randomchap · 09/08/2020 21:03

As an insomniac, it's only 12 more sleeps 'til Christmas for me.

Rose789 · 09/08/2020 21:06

😂😂😂

Curiosity101 · 09/08/2020 21:07

I enjoy seeing people excited about things Grin

I feel like the world is a better place for having people (adults) who get excited about how many sleeps it is until a special event.

I appreciate I'm apparently in the minority though Blush

shinyredbus · 09/08/2020 21:09

Is it really such a big deal tho?! Really?

HansBanans · 09/08/2020 21:19

@Watdafark yeah I'm not very fast nor do I know anyone under that age. Off with my head I guess 😂

Lilimoon · 09/08/2020 21:30

Just reminded my husband we have 13 sleeps till our holiday about an hour ago. Love it!

MsVestibule · 09/08/2020 21:30

Seriously? It's just a silly saying, get over it.

milienhaus · 09/08/2020 21:32

Agreed, it’s juvenile and I judge it heavily. See also “holibobs” and “famalam”.

Watdafark · 09/08/2020 21:35

Also "cringe" instead of "cringeworthy". Ugh.

"A big ask." No, just pack this shit in.

HansBanans · 09/08/2020 21:36

@Rose789 Santa 🎅 🎄 woohoo!!!

MrsClatterbuck · 09/08/2020 22:16

Gosh I thought I was the only person who didn't like this phrase especially when used by adults. Small children I might just let away with it. As someone has said as a countdown to Christmas and as only in the week before by the aforesaid small children.

somm · 09/08/2020 22:58

As a child, for me, it was always about the build-up to Christmas Eve, not 'how many sleeps 'til Christmas Day'. It does seem very childish to say, '[So] many sleeps to [whatever]', and it hurts my ears, but if a child's used to that terminology what does it matter? My build-up to Christmas Day was the [traditional] advent calendar, and I couldn't wait to reach the 24th. The advent calendar was a massive part of the Christmas traditions for me - no 'sleeps'.

Yaottie · 09/08/2020 23:00

Nope it's fucking childish and ridiculous for adults to say it. Grow up

SuckingDownDarjeeling · 09/08/2020 23:02

Something tells me that if you knew you were going to win the Euromillions jackpot in ten days, you wouldn't mind counting down the sleeps 😂

WinterAndRoughWeather · 09/08/2020 23:06

I’m with you OP, and I’m afraid I also feel the same way about adults with a Disney or Harry Potter obsession (especially if it extends to tattoos).

I know, I know, it’s none of my business and 99.9% of the time I give it no thought, but when these things crop up I wince (and judge - and you are welcome to judge me in turn for being a cunt).
