Tinned fruit is just the best

Have woke up with a bit of a hangover and just snarffed a tin of orange segments and am how about to scoff another tin of grapefruit segments.
No mess, no peeling, and delightfully mushy.
Much better than the real thing.

I'm allergic to all citrus fruit.
But tinned pear is my go to.

Hippofrog · 14/06/2020 10:46

Why can’t you buy tip-top anymore 😩.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 14/06/2020 10:47

I love tinned mandarins I buy them in juice so a little less sugar and drain the juice away

Love tinned pineapple and apricots (too much faffing about the fresh ones) and often use tinned apples for a quick crumble

Never tired tinned oranges

Foobydoo · 14/06/2020 10:47

@Judethe0bscure

Even better with tinned milk! Reminds me of "desert" at my Nan's.
DD had this for a snack last night, she had asked me to get her the funny milk in a tin that her Grandma has and a tin of mandarin oranges. I got myself a tin of peaches and a tin of carnation cream, it is a really thick tinned cream, you can turn the tin upside down and it doesn't fall out. It is one of my guilty pleasures.

I didn't know you could still buy tinned cream? That's now on next week's shopping list!

Lifeaback · 14/06/2020 12:24

Tinned peaches with Greek yoghurt and granola is one of my favourite breakfasts! And tinned fruit cocktail and ice cream is such a lovely refreshing dessert, one of my favourite things to have on a sunny day

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2020 12:27

Tinned apricots and evaporated milk. Lockdown has me all retro. Grin

The tinned fruit counter is my favourite bit of an all inclusive holiday hotel. I'm not that partial to a tinned pear, but love peaches, prunes and mandarins all in together.

Totally agree that chocolate ice cream is the ideal accompaniment to mandarins.

The must have a huge but gentle peeling machine, surely that volume cannot be done by hand?

Waiting for a poster to say I'm a tinned fruit peeler AMA now Grin

TSSDNCOP · 14/06/2020 13:22

@labazsisgoingmad did you have pilchards on toast too?

TSSDNCOP · 14/06/2020 13:24

On a roll now. On Christmas Day, DM would come over all Hyacinth and get in actual grapefruit for breakfast. Half each, with a glance cherry. Every year, having eaten tinned fruit every Sunday when crumble wasn't on the menu, we would eagerly pile in and within seconds look as though our gums had been pickled.

JustSew · 14/06/2020 13:33

Everyone else bought toilet rolls. I bought tinned peaches Grin.
Another who grew up with fruit cocktail and evaporated milk as a pudding.

labazsisgoingmad · 14/06/2020 13:49

oh yes pilchards on toast was quite a staple thing in our house always the Glenrych i think it was in the red tin. yummy

Mypathtriedtokillme · 14/06/2020 14:06

Tinned peaches, pears and pineapple.

If it’s mum’s home bottled fruit then it’s spiced black plums, peaches and cinnamon apples.

Tinned Peach baked with a vanilla sponge on top with custard is the best ever.

LellyMcKelly · 14/06/2020 14:11

OMG, I have a tin of rhubarb in the cupboard I’d forgotten about. I’m so going to have that now!

Tulipstulips · 14/06/2020 14:13

My gran used to serve us halved tinned peaches in syrup, with Carnation evaporated milk poured over the top, so they looked like a soft fried egg. Mmmmmmm.

Our tea in the 70s was often tinned fruit cocktail served with bread and butter.
Lovely!

Everything in moderation as they say.

I bought extra tins from March incase stores closed. I had not eaten a tin of fruit cocktail since I was a DC. I decided to get through the pile my new sweet treat a tin of fruit cocktail with a lump of vanilla icecream. Beautiful.

HaudMaDug · 14/06/2020 14:29

Tinned grapefruit in juice (NO to syrup, too sweet) is my fave breakfast every morning. I wake up craving it and end up eating the whole large tin. Makes the first cup of coffee of the day most delicious.
No messy peeling or spray of citrus juice in the eyes, just open the tin and dive in. I drain the juice into a glass to drink with my dinner (no waste in this house).
Love tinned pineapple chunks and mandarin segs too, guilt free fridge grazing material. Better than Cake

climbingcorfecastle · 14/06/2020 14:33

I remember going to the golf club dinners as a child and 'fruit salad' was tinned fruit in a lovely glass. It seemed the height of sophistication and we would always check and be envious of whoever got the cherry, there only seemed to be one of these.

TerrorWig · 14/06/2020 14:37

I only like tinned pineapple really (and prefer it to fresh) as other fruits get slimy.

However - I keep a couple of tins about all the time as it’s great to be able to knock up a quick crumble!
