Tinned fruit is just the best

Have woke up with a bit of a hangover and just snarffed a tin of orange segments and am how about to scoff another tin of grapefruit segments.
No mess, no peeling, and delightfully mushy.
Much better than the real thing.

Agree, citrus fruits rarely taste better than tinned in their own juice.

UniversalAunt · 14/06/2020 09:26

Tinned rhubarb always in the cupboard for crumbles.
Tinned gooseberries not so good.

Fond memories of Sunday Tea at Nans house .Tinned peaches served with tinned cream(anyone remember that) .Salmon salad (also tinned) and bread and butter! Like tinned pineapple better than fresh.(Does anyone else get a sore mouth/rash from fresh pineapple?

@Coldemort

I've had tinned oranges, tinned grapefruit, 3 cups of tea, a yogurt and honey on toast. Hangover seems to have gone, I am however bouncing off the walls...
Grin enjoy your sugar rush. Will you have a little lie down this afternoon?
Yellowwibble · 14/06/2020 09:30

I like to need the odd tin in the back of fruit in the cupboard to serve it ice cream. I madarins in juice. But occasionally find they taste a bit metallic. I'm not sure if you get that with the syrup versions.

Why’s has nobody mentioned tinned pears! My two year old eats them by the pallet load. It is so hard to get a ripe pear yet the tinned ones you can enjoy straight away.

Hugsgalore · 14/06/2020 09:35

I absolutely love an Eton mess made with tinned peaches instead of strawberries. It is seriously delicious 🤤

Oh no, come on now. I was just getting on board and you mentioned pears. You like feeding your child dirty grit is it? No.
Coldemort · 14/06/2020 09:43

Does anyone else get a sore mouth/rash from fresh pineapple?

Theres an enzyme in pineapple that digests protein. So when you eat it, it eats you back Hence the sore mouth @dottiedodah

Tinned pears are great! Ripe, soft and tasty - no waiting and guessing if pears are soft enough to eat! Love tinned pineapple and peaches too, all in own juice Smile

PS: Tinned pineapple is my "morning recovery" food too Grin

Tinned peaches are one of my favourite treats!!

Seeingadistance · 14/06/2020 10:03

Tinned oranges are amazing! Where do you get yours from, OP? I’ve only ever seen them in Morrisons, and they don’t always have them.

Boulshired · 14/06/2020 10:06

Also a big fan of frozen cherries, was majorly upset (little things that get you) when the sudden demand of frozen fruit left me without them for a few weeks.

bigbluebus · 14/06/2020 10:07

Tinned mandarin segements, fruit cocktail or peach slices were always a staple of my childhood in 60's/70's. My own DS used to request peach slices at primary school age as he'd had them for school lunch. Can't say I've eaten them for a long time although do still like a tinned pineapple ring with a piece of gammon steak.

TheFormerPorpentiaScamander · 14/06/2020 10:08

DS1 loves tinned peaches with condensed milk.

Tinned pears are my favourite.
Ds2 won't eat tinned fruit. Hes a food snob Grin

TheGriffle · 14/06/2020 10:08

Mandarins, peaches and pineapple. All extremely delicious tinned. Love them. I’m going to get some next time I go to the shop.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 14/06/2020 10:10

The excitement when you get the cherry in the fruit cocktail!!

startrek90 · 14/06/2020 10:14

I used to give my cherry away, I did however used to relieve my sister of the peaches in return.....

billy1966 · 14/06/2020 10:15

I can't keep my lot in fruit salad, so add several tins of peaches and mandarins to strawberries, grapes and kiwi to bulk it out.

No sooner is it prepared, than it vanishes.

I love tinned grapefruit in juice, cold from the fridge. Delicious.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/06/2020 10:17

Did anyone else have "fried egg" for pudding on guide camp? Half a peach on a slice of swiss roll.

Igtg · 14/06/2020 10:19

Tinned peaches with the syrup and Ideal milk. I’ve got that in the cupboard for later.

malificent7 · 14/06/2020 10:28

Tinned pears are better than fresh pears. Just gonna have some now!

RedPanda2 · 14/06/2020 10:32

Tinned pineapple, apricots and peaches with porridge is my everyday breakfast or lunch. My fresh fruit always rots before I eat it

BalloonSlayer · 14/06/2020 10:33

Tinned mandarins with chocolate ice cream is a wonderful pudding.
Try it. You know you want to.

GrumpySausage · 14/06/2020 10:42

I love tinned mandarin orange segments. Especially with condensed milk on them. Haven't had it for years but it used to be such a treat.
