Mayo left out overnight keep or throw away?

So the mayo was left out overnight, a brand new bottle which had been used once! It’s been warm out and I’ve only just noticed it, is it safe to keep or does it need to be thrown?!

Ok thank you to be honest I had already put it back in the fridge but when I googled it said throw away so thought I’d check with the people of Mumsnet Grin

The 'on the shelf' thing isn't necessarily relevant though, the life of food changes radically once the tin or jar or other sealed airtight packaging is opened, and if other bacteria get in by way of a licked spoon or grubby dipped fingers, for example.

I was more worried about what Simon had done to deserve being left out all night. That will teach me not to glance a titles But read them properly!

Idododoidadada · 22/05/2020 14:08

Yep, once opened if left out bin it

“Hellmann's Mayonnaise

Instructions: Keep refrigerated for three months after opening - do not freeze.

Dr Barratt says: 'The long list of ingredients, in particular eggs and cream, indicate it would never be sensible to store this at room temperature.

'Acidity, in the form of lemon juice, has been added to slow bacterial growth, but eggs and cream can spoil quickly and cause severe problems if they become infected.

'The maker's instructions should be adhered too strictly.'

VERDICT: Refrigerate”

My 5 yo took the mayo outside and hid it under a flowerpot because he was going to make an Easter egg hunt for grown-ups. Then he forgot about it and I didn’t realise the mayo was missing until lunchtime the next day. We’re still using it, it’s fine!

Herpesfreesince03 · 22/05/2020 14:12

Left it out of where? Mines been on the side for weeks. No ones died

Beautiful3 · 22/05/2020 14:12

Throw away. I once had food poisoning from a tuna and mayo sandwich, as I'd left it in my bag all day until my late break (I worked a late shift).

Reluctantbettlynch · 22/05/2020 14:14

Definitely fine. I'm amazed at some of the extremes on here; although i'm not sure why as 99% of posters seem to think food behaves like cinderella at midnight on the magical best before date it transforms Hmm

Becstar90 · 22/05/2020 14:15

@Beautiful3 I'd say it was prob the tuna that made you sick.

NiteFlights · 22/05/2020 14:15

I would say if it’s brand new bottle, only used once, it’s fine. If it was a half empty jar that had had been dipped into with knives etc and my kitchen was warm, I might think twice.

Pleasenodont · 22/05/2020 14:15

It will be absolutely fine. Some people keep sauces in the cupboard all of the time.

eddiemairswife · 22/05/2020 14:19

I don't keep mine in the fridge. I live alone; it lasts for ages.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 22/05/2020 14:23

Hahaha! Is this a joke? Eat it. If you can't face that post it to me and I will eat it!

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 22/05/2020 14:23

Definitely keep it. My in laws don't keep theirs in the fridge at all after opening and they're ok. I'll have to find other ways of making them suffer ....

HoomanMoomin · 22/05/2020 14:26

Of course eat it.

ozymandiusking · 22/05/2020 14:26

Keep it. Pop it back in the fridge.
Stop worrying about it.

Poppinjay · 22/05/2020 14:28

A new bottle of mayo with the top that seals is very unlikely to have been contaminated with food poisoning bacteria after one use. I would put it back in the fridge and carry on using it.

Yoyomar · 22/05/2020 14:30

I keep ketchup and mayo in the cupboard, have

Yoyomar · 22/05/2020 14:31

Whoops!
Have never had any problems, they last for ages even in a cupboard.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/05/2020 14:33

I keep my mayo in the cupboard at all times, it's made with pasturised egg, oil, salt and preservatives. I've been keeping shop-bought mayo in the cupboard for 47 years (not the same jar obviously), to no ill-effect.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 22/05/2020 14:35

We don't keep ours in the fridge at all

Sciurus83 · 22/05/2020 14:36

People keep mayo in the cupboard once it's opened?! My mind is blown.

Doesn't it do that weird clear congealy thing around the edge?

Poppyismyfavourite · 22/05/2020 14:37

I never keep it in the fridge!

Scruffyoak · 22/05/2020 14:37

I always leave it out and always been fine.

HeyAllYouCoolCatsAndKittenz · 22/05/2020 14:38

i dont keep my mayo in the fridge and i have never thought twice about it now am thinking i should be keeping it in the fridge in future.
