To not be able to agree on this 'simple' question

Please help me answer, to DH, what has been an ongoing discussion for at least 4 weeks:

A shop closes at 12pm (midday) and reopens at 2pm the same day. 12pm on the dot, 2pm on the dot. How long is the shop closed for, in hours?

There's no riddle behind it, nothing to bend time, stop clocks etc etc

It's also not a trick question, we just can't agree and I can't find another way to explain this

So how many minutes was he working out at?

OhioOhioOhio · 30/04/2020 13:20

OMG. Omg.
What's his job? How is he functioning in actual life by counting like that?

JasonPollack · 30/04/2020 13:20

Does he normally struggle with day to day understanding?!

Tiredmumno1 · 30/04/2020 13:20

@LuminousAmber hit the nail on the head there Grin

OP you are obviously correct and your DH is batshit crazy Grin

FortunesFave · 30/04/2020 13:20

Show him on a clock OP. Count it out. Say "BING!" when you start at 12...explain it like a stopwatch. Use an online stopwatch.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 30/04/2020 13:20

Never put him in charge of the Sunday roast!

heartsonacake · 30/04/2020 13:21

Your husband is an idiot. It’s closed for 2 hours.

Borris · 30/04/2020 13:21

How many minutes did he calculate?

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2020 13:21

I hope he doesn't employ anybody and pay them by the hour with that logic.

We need to see this diagram.

BendingSpoons · 30/04/2020 13:21

In a way, it's the 2pm that is not counted. As it is closed from 12:00:00 to 13:59:59 (i.e. One second before 2pm). If we weren't in lockdown I'd tell him to stand outside with a stopwatch. In fact he still could use a stopwatch with a clock at home.

Nacknick · 30/04/2020 13:21

Please please please share his diagram! That will make my day 😂

OhioOhioOhio · 30/04/2020 13:22

At least we've found something that all of mumsnet finally agrees on.

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 13:22

I’ve just asked my 6 and 4 year olds as we’ve been learning to tell the time this week.

‘If a shop closes at 12 o clock and opens at 2 o clock, how many hours is it closed for?’.

Answer from both... 2 hours.

pooopypants · 30/04/2020 13:22

He's actually fairly intelligent, degree level education, very senior job etc. Maths is a bit of a struggle sometimes.

I'm doing the schooling! It's been an inside joke for years that the kids are to come to me for maths homework!

So he thinks there are 25 hours in a day?!

EarlGreyT · 30/04/2020 13:22

2 hours. Get a clock with hands out and use that to demonstrate. I can not work out how on earth he has come up with the answer 3 hours

Allergictoironing · 30/04/2020 13:23

Do you have an old fashioned analogue clock anywhere? If so, put the hands at 12 then ask him to move the hands 1 hour. Stop, then ask him to move the hands an hour again & ask him what the clock now says.

Sparklfairy · 30/04/2020 13:23

Ughhhhh I dated someone who insisted on working shit out like this. Beware, this may make you nauseous.

He insisted on 'counting' how many days (yes days) we had been dating/since our first date. A grown man in his thirties! But he would always add an extra day because he counted first date day as one day. I would argue that the following day would be 24 hours, so one day, but nope, he wouldn't have it. Clearly he was desperate to have a longer relationship he had to fudge the numbers Hmm He didn't last long! creep

SinkGirl · 30/04/2020 13:23

He’s not in charge of anything important is he?

😳

LemonChiffon · 30/04/2020 13:24

It's very easy to prove to him. Wait until it's 12pm, start a timer, come back at 2pm, stop the timer.

Allergictoironing · 30/04/2020 13:24

Ah x-post with EarlGreyT

Modestandatinybitsexy · 30/04/2020 13:24

Well then he's an arse if he knows you're better at these things and he still thinks you're wrong!

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/04/2020 13:24

How can he look at a clock face and NOT see that it's two hours?

There you go, even google agrees 😉

Sorry OP, but this has made me properly chuckle. Is he finding lockdown very hard? 😂
