To worry about schools opening after Easter

I am due back to work from maternity leave after Easter. My job can be done from home. DH is a teacher with a high risk condition currently working from home and my childcare is closed until further notice. AIBU to worry about childcare arrangements if schools reopen after Easter?

There's no way on earth schools are reopening just after Easter. Not a chance. The kind of newspapers reporting this need chucking in the bin. It does no good and offers people such a false sense of how long this is going to impact upon them and their families.

Umnoway · 08/04/2020 16:56

It’s not going to happen, it will most likely be September. I’ve said this on previous posts but I teach in a college and I’m due to start maternity leave in early July. My HOD sent me home the day after the press conference putting pregnant women into the ‘high risk’ category and told me she didn’t expect me to return before mat leave. The college closed by the end of that week anyway which we all expected and our students won’t be taking exams so I don’t see it randomly opening for no reason before summer.

Leflic · 08/04/2020 16:57

They cancelled the exams as one less thing to worry about. The earlier that decision was made the easier to make plans if it did all kick.

Honestly it seems very unlikely that deaths will continue to go up by much especially after next week. Every week means more people who’ve had it can theoretically go back to work. I know we don’t really know who they are but they’ll be statistically enough to ease lockdown.

By the end of May the rate of infection will be low enough to have schools open.It might go up a bit but then it’s 6 weeks off again.

firsttimemomx · 08/04/2020 16:57

I think they'll open again in September

MagisCapulus · 08/04/2020 17:01

Listen to scotland. Nicola always seems to pip boris at the post as to what is going on. They are generally doing UK wide solutions so What she says usually follows in England.

Leflic · 08/04/2020 17:01

Umnoway colleges are different though as they close second week of June. Not much point in dragging everyone in for two weeks when they’ve been taught online for two months.

Boarding schools may not reopen until September for obvious reasons.

State schools will definitely be under pressure to open and free up the workforce.

MorganKitten · 08/04/2020 17:03

It’ll be September

AprilFloundering · 08/04/2020 17:03

It's unlikely they'll open that soon. I'm in a primary school, too.

But you'll both just have to suck it up and figure it out like everyone else in that position. You're not alone.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/04/2020 17:04

I picked up more learning packs from school yesterday. They won't be opening for a while

Appuskidu · 08/04/2020 17:07

This idea has come about from a price of research published in the Lancet saying that schools closing (alongside NO other form of social distancing) isn’t very effective.

No shit, Sherlock.

As that isn’t what has happened here, it is neither very useful or very interesting as a piece of information.

Some piss poor journalists have taken this ‘Information’ though and decided that schools will be reopening after Easter, even saying that a minister agrees its a good idea. This minister hasn’t actually got a name through, which kind of tells you a lot.

Prof Neil Ferguson has stated that schools closing has been very effective at helping social distancing, which was after all what they were going for.

Nearly 900 people died here of the virus today; things are still very scary. I think you can rest assured that schools won’t be opening next week.

gingercat02 · 08/04/2020 17:09

They won't. May HT is absolutely the earliest schools will go back but depends on numbers by mid May.

sweetkitty · 08/04/2020 17:10

I’m on a rota of 1 week in, 3 weeks off to look after keyworkers children (we have one child in).

Keyworkers children are still in schools.

Nicola Sturgeon has said not to expect schools back before August.

dustyparadeground · 08/04/2020 17:11

Schools in the UK might and I repeat MIGHT go back in Sept so leave your worries for other things

Kathsmum · 08/04/2020 17:11

Scottish schools are different, break up June & go back in August so I’m watching to see if that happens too.

Rosebel · 08/04/2020 17:13

The government have said today they are not removing any restrictions. I don't think that will change in the next week. There is very little chance of schools opening anytime soon.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/04/2020 17:15

Yanbu to worry, no way are schools going back after easter!

sweetkitty · 08/04/2020 17:15

We break up 24th June and go back 13th August so I reckon this will be when schools go back with England’s in September as usual.

Weebitawks · 08/04/2020 17:16

A lot of the teachers I know have recently been updated that it's most likely to be June that schools reopen.

dottiedodah · 08/04/2020 17:17

I too have read comments about reopening after Easter. That seems to me to be much too soon though .The reasoning in the papers ,was that this would enable everyone to get back to work ,which also seems odd bearing in mind that public transport would be packed! Also read that 20 to 30 year olds would be "let out" first as well .I think beginning of May at the very earliest really.

Appuskidu · 08/04/2020 17:20

a lot of the teachers I know have recently been updated that it's most likely to be June that schools reopen.

Not had that memo here Grin.

Considering that none of us knew the schools were definitely closing until BJ announced it on the tv, I think anything coming via social media/friends/Facebook should be treated with extreme caution. The government won’t suddenly decide to email ‘a lot’ of teachers with this information, but not tell the rest of us.

noideaatallreally · 08/04/2020 17:25

I would be very surprised if any teacher has been told in any official capacity of a June return. No one knows - I'm sure some HTs would wish it would be June, but that is all it can be - a wish. I would be amazed if we go back before September.

PleasantVille · 08/04/2020 17:30

No one thinks that schools will be open in barely 10 days time when the holidays end, no one at all.

Where have you got that idea from?

InTheTempest · 08/04/2020 17:32

I have no idea when it will be but it definitely won't be after Easter

flumposie · 08/04/2020 17:32

I think June at the earliest.

choc71 · 08/04/2020 17:34

Personally I reckon schools are out till September. They can't run them without enough staff, and the 2 weeks before the schools shut were proving difficult enough. If they want Unis, etc., open in Sep, then they're going to have to postpone opening until we KNOW that it's safe. They're open now for the children of Key Workers. That's all we need.
