To worry about schools opening after Easter

I am due back to work from maternity leave after Easter. My job can be done from home. DH is a teacher with a high risk condition currently working from home and my childcare is closed until further notice. AIBU to worry about childcare arrangements if schools reopen after Easter?

No one thinks that schools will be open in barely 10 days time when the holidays end, no one at all.

Loads of newspapers have reported this today.

All based on that shit flawed Lancet research which some journos have pounced on!

We couldn't practise social distancing in the classrooms. We have very low numbers in of key worker and vulnerable children right now but can still only fit 8 children in a classroom whilst still maintaining a 2m distance between them all

Off topic but are you really managing to stay 2m from the children and to keep them 2m from each other.

We definitely aren't. Haven't even tried to be honest. I didn't realise the rule applied in childcare settings. 75% of the children we have in are under 4. I've had them crying and clinging round my neck, on my knee, washed their hands for them, helped them clean up after accidents, helped with meal times. Definitely hands on, un social distanced care. I usually only teach from age 7 up but even then, I can't imagine achieving the 2m rule.

Oh, and schools won't open after Easter. I am desperately hoping for a few weeks before the summer holidays.

chickedeee · 08/04/2020 17:35

Until you know what is happening I would not worry. Wink

waitrosequeue · 08/04/2020 17:36

I can't see it happening.

If they do reopen after Easter I will be pretty pissed off as DS A levels were cancelled !

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 17:45

I just read it could be after Easter, but it was in Metro, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
We've been told not before September, we had an email on Monday morning.
Mine is a boarder though, so might be different.
A lot come from China, Hong Kong, Turkey etc, so can't see it happening before then anyway, for us.

DonnaDarko · 08/04/2020 17:45

I think September for schools, but hopefully nurseries will be a bit sooner, in June

The maximum furlough time at the moment is 3 months, which leads me to believe that they're anticipating reducing restrictions around June.

But it could just be wishful thinking as I have a preschooler on my hands Grin

MintyMabel · 08/04/2020 17:47

In Scotland we were told 14-16 weeks so after summer

No we weren’t.

Pinkblueberry · 08/04/2020 17:48

They won’t. I work in a school and parents are being emailed another 2 weeks worth of home learning for their kids for after Easter.

tallah · 08/04/2020 17:51

Ha! That's not happening

ChocolateTea · 08/04/2020 17:53

Another teacher here. My bet is beginning of July for England. Get them in without year 11 and year 13 for 3 weeks. Then close them again. Then back in September.

If the government do decide it’s safe to open before September, I agree that this may be the best answer.

PianoTuner567 · 08/04/2020 17:55

It won’t be September. That’s six months in lockdown. Even China has only had three.

But it won’t be after Easter either - May half-term, which gives six weeks to see how it affects the spread and then it’s into summer hols anyway. Creates a natural on/off of the government measures.

Rhianna1980 · 08/04/2020 17:59

There’s more chance of you winning the lottery twice than schools opening end of Easter. HTH

firefly101 · 08/04/2020 18:04

Surely exams have been cancelled because you couldn’t fairly expect students to sit GCSEs and A levels after having, say, six weeks off school then going straight into exams. By cancelling them the focus can be on determining a clear assessment process based on mocks and teacher assessments.

If schools don’t go back until Sep the next peak will be during flu season. Schools going back in June would mean the next peak is in the summer.

Cam77 · 08/04/2020 18:04

Nearly a thousand deaths in the UK in the last 24 hours. New cases have risen substantially again. Also, in contrast to all the other severely effected countries in which tens of thousands have already had and recovered from it, virtually none of the UK cases have yet recovered (less than 1%). The UK is likely to be the worst hit in Europe I'm afraid, due mostly to its weak leadership. Talk of schools reopening before September is complete fantasy, unless the government decides to just give up saving people and prioritise the economy.

Quartz2208 · 08/04/2020 18:04

Easter will not be happening at all.

I think there may be some movement on mid June/July time though

SmileEachDay · 08/04/2020 18:04

Exams weren’t cancelled because schools might still be closed during exam season. They were cancelled because leaving students in limbo for weeks until we knew when they’d reopen would have been desperately unfair. Some subjects hadn’t finished teaching content. The “mitigating circumstance” applications would have been impossible. The exam administration- which involves thousands of people and very, very fixed procedures- could not have been frozen for a few weeks and then started again and still happened.

So there’s no need to be pissed off. It won’t make any difference for your son.

DICarter1 · 08/04/2020 18:08

I’m glad you’ve posted. It has been worrying me that the schools will open soon. One of my kids has an underlying health condition along with complex needs. His older sister also has special needs and will find going back to school with certain measures in place hard. I’m also worried about them being ill. I’m lucky I can work from home though I know for some it’s not easy. I’m also worried about the teachers and also how clean the school will be. Our head teacher’s children were being looked after by his parents both of whom have now developed covid 19.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2020 18:09

pianotuner , schools are not back in many parts of China, certainly not in Wuhan.

Leflic · 08/04/2020 18:10

Cam77 what do you mean no one recovers! It’s 50/50 once you are on last resort ventilators. Many thousands have recovered from it.

Schools will be back before September.Absolutely. They haven%to actually glossed fir many even over Easter.
Back after half term..Deaths will be back in low double figures.

Srslydontgiveacrap · 08/04/2020 18:11

Some people will worry about anything

Cam77 · 08/04/2020 18:13

@Leflec
I'm talking about recorded recoveries in the UK. The stats are out there, its not secret knowledge.

Rhianna1980 · 08/04/2020 18:14

Straight from the horse’s mouth! They aren’t opening.
www.theguardian.com/education/2020/apr/08/uk-schools-not-reopen-straight-after-easter-officials-insist

ChocolateTea · 08/04/2020 18:15

Recorded recoveries are skewed because they don't test enough here compared to other countries.
