To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

catsarelifetome · 06/04/2020 18:24

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

Damage to the car? Serves her right?

Fucking hell Shock

VeryShortNotice · 06/04/2020 19:20

@OhMyDarling You’re seriously blaming your friend for being hit by a car and getting hurt?

Boireannachlaidir · 06/04/2020 19:20

More of us should take up cycling, it'd certainly help the planet, be better for us and the NHS wouldn't be dealing with obesity as much.

mumwon · 06/04/2020 19:20

However there have been some very local incidents of prats on bikes driving at speed over FOOT paths on the edge of fields & forcing people to jump out of the way - also some mini mopeds & motorbikes - we have scarcely any police locally & they cant control this daftness -But this is different
Every law abiding cyclist knows that they have to give way to pedestrians … these little exceptions are accidents waiting to happen

BeetrootRocks · 06/04/2020 19:21

Concerned about damage to the car from it hitting her friends body as well Confused

Stellamboscha · 06/04/2020 19:22

Luckily my local park which has banned cars for the duration has also banned cyclists. I cycle myself but am terrified by the Lycra lunatics out there terrorising pedestrians and aggressive to motorists.

Snorkelface · 06/04/2020 19:24

In the park near me the pedestrian paths are full of cyclists weaving in and out of people or cycling at speed. The roads a largely deserted round here, the people walking are keeping their distance from each other, the cyclists aren't.

MarginalGain · 06/04/2020 19:25

Pretty surprising how many people have warmed so quickly to a police state.

How will we come back from this?

HopefullyAnonymous · 06/04/2020 19:25

THERE IS NO ONE HOUR TIME LIMIT ON EXERCISE

Bloody sick of seeing it on nearly every thread. It’s once a day but there is no time limit!

cheeseismydownfall · 06/04/2020 19:26

I do see your point.

My DH (v keen, experienced rider - does downhill MTB etc) is not riding right now. He feels that the risk of an accident, although small, is still a risk we shouldn't be taking, given the demands an accident would place on emergency services.

He has set up a turbo trainer in the garage and is using Zwift to give himself a heart attack instead Grin.

Reallybadidea · 06/04/2020 19:26

I love her but she is selfish and the whole ordeal serves her right

You're really not her friend. What a nasty thing to say.

Snorkelface · 06/04/2020 19:26

There is no time limit (yet).

BackforGood · 06/04/2020 19:27

YABU and ridiculous (and I'm not even a cyclist!)

mindproject · 06/04/2020 19:27

People are so fucking stupid. Leave others alone with the little bit of enjoyment they have left. Why are you so bitter OP?

champagneandfromage50 · 06/04/2020 19:27

No issue with cycling, i see a few families out with there kids, however if what you describe is a large group of cyclists together it sounds like a cycling club flouting the rules

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 06/04/2020 19:28

OMG. Just OMG! You blame your friend who got hit by a car?!

midsomermurderess · 06/04/2020 19:29

Just a stream of gibberish, OP. Do you really, seriously have nothing better to do with yourself, even if it's just wanking on a blanket?

Eckhart · 06/04/2020 19:31

@OhMyDarling Seriously? Your responsibly cycling friend has been knocked off her bike by a car, is injured, and you're angry with her? Did she deliberately cycle under the car?

How is it her fault and not the driver's?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 06/04/2020 19:31

The stupid is strong on here right now

PuffinShop · 06/04/2020 19:31

My friend was hit by a car today while out in her bike

And instead of being angry at the driver, you're angry at your friend, who by your own admission is an experienced and sensible cyclist? Unbelievable.

GreenWheat · 06/04/2020 19:32

Sounds like an excuse to have a pop at a group of people you don't like under the guise of Corona distance championing, like so much social judgement at the moment.

VeryShortNotice · 06/04/2020 19:32

@BeetrootRocks Well of course. Some minor damage to the car that hit a cyclist is clearly the major priority. 🙄

DS and I go cycling as our daily exercise. He’s used to swim training 10 hours a week, so he does need a decent amount of exercise (or he feels terrible, and is extremely annoying). I can’t run (for several reasons, principally an autoimmune arthritis in my pelvis/spine that does not like impact) but I can cycle. In fact, getting a minimum of 4 hours cardiovascular exercise a week (suggestions: swimming or cycling) is a big part of my treatment for my condition. It helps control inflammation and makes me much less of a burden on the NHS.

So we cycle every day. Mostly on the road/dedicated cycle lanes. And actually, being on the road is the easiest way to keep an adequate distance from other people while out and about. It’s a lot harder to avoid other people walking on the pavements. And even harder if you’re all on the path through whatever green space everyone has headed towards. And the much reduced traffic makes being on the road much nicer (and safer) than pre-lockdown.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 06/04/2020 19:33

Staggering, isn't it? Hit by a car and it 'serves her right' and she 'wasted' time in A&E for treatment Hmm.

LaurieMarlow · 06/04/2020 19:35

It would be great if the good people of MN would stop using CV to try and stamp out behaviour that, while they clearly don’t enjoy or understand, is not spreading CV and is helping others to cope.

Put the inner prefects back in their box. Thanks.

PuffinShop · 06/04/2020 19:35

And it's ridiculous phrasing too. Try 'Someone drove into my friend today while she was out on her bike'. I hate how car collisions are always framed as freak accidents like nobody was driving the bloody thing.
