Variations in Height Weight & Dress Size

I just read an article about a woman who lost 3st 12llb with Slimming World. She’s 5ft 2” , now weighs 11 stone 2 but reckons she wore a size 10 dress for her 40th. I’m about half an inch taller & maybe just a couple of pounds heavier but there’s no way on earth I’d fit into a size 10! I got down to 9 stone a while back but was still in a 14! I do have broad shoulders & hips but even so, can there really be such a variation in people’s dress sizes?

Because dress sizes aren’t standardised. I have clothes in my wardrobe in 3 different sizes and they all fit.

Bunnylady54 · 11/03/2020 12:23

Thought I’d put this in chat

Not this again Confused no shit Sherlock, people come on different shapes & sizes.

Unless you're buying made to measure tailored clothes then the sizes that some people can get into will vastly differ across the spectrum.

feelingverylazytoday · 11/03/2020 12:29

Depends on where you buy the dress, style and shape of dress, and body shape, ie where the fat is distributed. Women tend to vary quite a bit in the last aspect.
More rarely, she might be extremely fit and have a disproportionate amount of muscle, though this is quite hard for women to achieve.

lubeybooby · 11/03/2020 12:29

Yes there can. I am very 'densely packed' and weigh over 2 stone more than a friend, but I'm a dress size smaller than her. I carry it evenly everywhere, while she has very thin legs and arms.

Runningonempty84 · 11/03/2020 12:30

If she'd bought the dress in Fat Face, White Stuff etc, then I can well believe it. If it's from Topshop, that would prove more tricky.

Happygirl79 · 11/03/2020 12:31

People will vary in dress size when they weigh the same because some are more toned than others

strawberrylipgloss · 11/03/2020 12:31

Yes
Go to H and M and buy 3 pairs of trousers and 3 dresses. Bet they are at least 3 different sizes

PerfidiousAlbion · 11/03/2020 12:33

If a person is say, pear shaped, so small upper body and bigger lower body, then she’ll be able to wear a smaller dress than someone who has a large upper body and small lower body, even though theyre the same height and weight. This is because dresses are generally cut to fit a pear shaped body (that being the most common type) and the bottoms of dresses are not generally tight fitting.

Its not unusual for a broad shouldered woman to have to wear a larger size dress, even though she’s slim. Its about frame not weight.

randomsabreuse · 11/03/2020 12:35

I carry most of my weight on my arse and thighs - which means I can be a 16 in jeans and need a 10 for a skater dress to fit the rest of me.

Tailored things I'm likely to be a 12 unless generous across the shoulders - I then need some darts for it not to hang like a sack below my bust.

Size depends on shop and style.

KittenVsBox · 11/03/2020 12:38

Any chance 11s2 was her starting weight? And now she is 7s4?

Didntwanttochangemyname · 11/03/2020 12:41

I'm 11st 8, 5ft 8 tall and I vary in size from an 8 to a 14. It's all bollocks and means nothing. If it fits you and you feel good in it, wear it.

Mumof1andacat · 11/03/2020 12:46

My friend is 5ft 6. Her ideal weight is 10st 4 which makes her a size 8 - 10. I'm 5ft. At 10st 4 I have to wear a size 14! We all carry weight differently. A while ago my DH lost 4st and didnt budge on clothing size.

Bunnylady54 · 11/03/2020 12:47

She was 15st & dropped to 11st 2

Darlingsleepthief · 11/03/2020 12:49

That’s crazy @mumof1andacat I am 5ft6 and weight 9.7 stone and am a size 12!

KnitFastDieWarm · 11/03/2020 12:50

At 9st 8lb (my lowest adult weight) I was a size 8 (yes, in topshop Hmm. In 2007). Even now that I’m several stone heavier, people never guess my weight correctly and I wear a size 16, sometimes a 14. It’s all about frame and fat distribution and muscle etc etc. We’re all different!

KatharinaRosalie · 11/03/2020 12:53

Of course there is, muscle mass makes a big difference as well. Me and my friend are the same height and same size, we swap clothes, including jeans and not just the stretchy one-size-fits-nobody stuff. I lift weights, she does not work out - she's almost 20 pounds lighter.

CookPassBabtridge · 11/03/2020 12:59

Of course body shapes are all different. I have a wide frame, so even when very skknny, size 10 was the lowest I could get due to the width of my pelvis and shoulders. Some people are petite or carry weight well etc..

araiwa · 11/03/2020 13:00

Ive never understood dress sizes

If theyre not standardised then theyre a waste of time. Theyre literally just meaningless numbers. Nothing to stop me making a dress for a 7ft 300lb woman and calling it size 0

Daddypigsglasses · 11/03/2020 13:07

If she’s pear shaped then she will be able to fit into a smaller dress, the magazine will have written it in the most flattering way possible as they’re selling a product.

She probably wouldn’t fit into a size 10 pair of jeans and vice versa for someone apple shaped who may but would need a bigger dress.

Not to mention that sizes bar hugely by shop.
Also fitting into a stretchy size 10 doesn’t necessarily mean you are a size 10 IYKWIM.

h3av3n · 11/03/2020 13:15

Muscle mass makes a huge difference, people are always surprised by my weight compared to my small size but it's because I have a decent amount of muscle

h3av3n · 11/03/2020 13:16

I'm 9 stone 4, size 6 sometimes even 4 and 5 foot 5, I've been the same weight at a size 10!

Dixiechickonhols · 11/03/2020 13:22

Gone from an 18/20 to a 10/12 on SlimmingWorld in 8 months. I wear mainly joules, Boden, next. Even in same make sizes vary. I have size 10 next jeans that hang off me but need a 12 in another next pair. Some clothes are huge, just had to send a size 8 dress back to hush that looked like a sack on me.

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 13:30

I’m sane weight as sliming world lady but eight inches taller. I can just about fit in a ten in most shops but I’d opt for a twelve if wearing trousers. She may have a very narrow frame or she might be a fairly extreme pair shape. A lot of people are twin completely different sizes top and bottom.

JasonBrun · 11/03/2020 13:32

Oh gawd. Shall we all list our heights weights and dress sizes now Wink

Seriously who fuckin cares. Get a better hobby than literal navel gazing.
