Variations in Height Weight & Dress Size

I just read an article about a woman who lost 3st 12llb with Slimming World. She’s 5ft 2” , now weighs 11 stone 2 but reckons she wore a size 10 dress for her 40th. I’m about half an inch taller & maybe just a couple of pounds heavier but there’s no way on earth I’d fit into a size 10! I got down to 9 stone a while back but was still in a 14! I do have broad shoulders & hips but even so, can there really be such a variation in people’s dress sizes?

As a 5ft2 pear shape, I'm size 8 on top and size 10 on my lower half. That's pretty constant whether I'm 9.5 st or below 9st. I store a lot of my bulk around a musuclar bum and thighs (long distance runner), and people tend to underestimate my weight due to a small bust and shoulders.

I would be surprised at someone of the same height, towards a couple of stones more than me being a genuine size 10 rather than the dress being from a shop that cuts very generously (no M&S, I really am not a size 6!) or the dress was very stretchy. 11st at 5ft 2 remains an overweight but no longer obese BMI, which tends to be hard to hide at 5ft 2. (Obviously she's made a very positive change to improve likelihood of better health, and it's an achievement to have made that kind of change)

My weight fluctuates from between 8 stone to 8 stone 11, but generally settles at 8.8. I am 5'7. I am 32.30.32 so totally out of proportion! Very thick waisted with skinny arms and legs.

Most tops are 6/8, bottoms are usually a 10, sometimes an 8. Depends where you shop. For example Tesco's and Marks I buy a size down as they come up big on me. Topshop, I go up a size.

I used to be a 14/16 but lost a lot of weight due to illness and have not managed to regain.

I’m also short but can wear size 4/6 - because of my height, not because I’m super slim. Smaller sizes tend to look more tailored if that makes sense, as because I’m short clothes generally fit quite oversized on me eg leg/arm length

@JasonBrun it's literally relevant to the topic of the thread... Never heard the idea that it's navel gazing to mention weight, clothes size etc... Very odd.

I'm 5'8 and just under 10 stone. I'm a size 12 but on another thread people of the same height as me were saying they looked 'gaunt' and like they had an eating disorder at my weight. I didn't even look gaunt when I was 9 stone!

People just carry their weight differently.

On another note, I don't know why people who are clearly not interested in discussing this topic are even bothering to post, other than to be rude. Just go and read something else!

it saddens me that women are still so obsessed with the label in their knickers. And still believe that dress size labels mean anything.

you are female. The fashion industry assumes you are a fool and labels accordingly.

I’m just over 5’1 and nine and a half stone. Just gained nearly three stone in two months on Mirtazapine! Definitely more comfy at about eight stone as I’m skinny of leg, flat of chest and large of tummy 🥳🤣I’m a dress size 12!

YerAWizardHarry · 16/07/2022 18:48

I’m 13at 10, 5ft 6 and wear a 16 comfortably or sometimes a 14 depending on item etc. People are generally shocked when I tell them how much I weigh because I apparently “carry my weight well”
