World Book Day Costume

I’ve spent a large part of today making a World sodding book day costume and my DC is very excited to be going to school tomorrow dressed as a dragon (Zog by Julia Donaldson).

Then I actually read the letter which was crumpled up at the bottom of his bag and rather than dress as a character like they have had to every other year since the beginning of time, this year the children are supposed to go to school dressed as a WORD. Three words have been suggested (sport, science, sparkly) I don’t know if these are the only words to use or whether they are just examples. It’s my own stupid fault for not reading the letter properly but in my defence I’m BF a teething baby and haven’t slept for what seems like forever.

I spoke to DS about changing the costume but he was so disappointed. When I asked him what he wanted to do he just said “you decide mummy” with a tear in his eye. So now I feel like the world’s worst mother!!!

AIBU to just send him in the Zog costume?

YABU - of course he shouldn’t wear the costume, all the other kids will be wearing football kits and he’ll be bullied for the rest of his life.
YANBU - just send him dressed as a the blummin dragon.

It can come under science - are dragons real? The study of animals. Or just say he's a dinosaur. Archeology, palaeontology etc are sciences.

PureAlchemy · 04/03/2020 22:55

Send him as a word that fits “dragon”.

Maybe pretend it’s a dinosaur if you’re wanting to pretend to fit into the science theme?

squeekums · 04/03/2020 22:55

dragon is a word
dragons obviously grab his interest and i thought whole idea was to get kids into reading? Best way for that is follow his likes in books

Does the dragon have a favourite football team? bang on a scarf and issue solved

We never followed the suggested ideas, dd has been as elsa a few times

DappledThings · 04/03/2020 22:58

I started my own thread before I'd seen this or I would have just posted here. I made a costume, and I'm generally shit at anything crafty or creative but was pretty pleased. And found out today nursery aren't doing it at all the feckers.

firawla · 04/03/2020 23:01

A dragon can be firey that’s not far off sparkle. Surely those words are only examples and they’ll accept people going in different directions otherwise where is in the fun in it?!

PennyArrowBar · 04/03/2020 23:01

Solidarity to all other mothers of small dragons 👍🏼😁

RosiePoseyPanda · 04/03/2020 23:20

DappledThings- you should send her in the costume anyway. Or have a World book day party at home.

Earlier when I suggested to DS that he go as a word and not wear his dragon costume, he was so disappointed I said he could dress up at home instead. And that me, his dad and the baby would dress up too and we could read stories, eat sweets and have a picnic tea. DH was not impressed by the thought of having to throw together a costume and sit and eat sandwiches on the floor when he’d just come back from work. But he perked up when I mentioned the sweets.

Hopefully now he’s going to school in costume he won’t feel the need to have the consolation ‘party’ but bet he still does. What a numpty I am!

Dragon is a word I would leave it at that!

If you really want to fit the letter the dragon in the hobbit collects treasure which is sparkly. And links to a book double win!

Sport loads of sports have a dragon mascot pick one your ds likes and go for that..

You can probably link it to science too but that would involve explaining how dragons aren't real....so I would stick to sparkle and treasure!

Kanga83 · 04/03/2020 23:48

Absolutely fits in science- the story is they become the flying dr's, without zog there's no flying bit to it, and medicine is a science.

Ruralretreating · 05/03/2020 00:27

I’m backing my own horse here but “perseverance” definitely fits a sport theme Grin

Ruralretreating · 05/03/2020 00:31

Btw am also breastfeeding a small baby and have spent most of the week making a box as a costume (long story), representing a book in a jar and decorating potatoes all for World Book Day. Solidarity with you OP on sleep-deprived crafting!

LaurieMarlow · 05/03/2020 00:33

You’re overthinking this. He’s going as dragon. Job done.

Or alternatively arse-licking teachers pet.

Only joking, I love Zog Grin

Mrschainsawuk · 05/03/2020 00:41

Hhaha I have just finished my son's dragon costume and his school is pj's

NC4Now · 05/03/2020 00:47

World book day is getting further from the point each year.

halfsoaked · 05/03/2020 00:50

zog is brilliant, let him go as Zog and enjoy it as that's what matters.

AfterSchoolWorry · 05/03/2020 08:43

Just write the word on the costume!

Areyoufree · 05/03/2020 08:48

Just had an 8 year old child walk past me dressed as the Joker from Batman. The Heath Ledger version. Don’t think people stick that close to the themes!

Nanny0gg · 05/03/2020 08:51

Well as I've just seen a child dressed as Darth Vader for World Book Day I'm not sure it matters/has any point any way.

Let him be who he likes and enjoy himself

(Also impressed that you made the costume. I always had to call in favours as Amazon wasn't around back in my day)

PureAlchemy · 05/03/2020 09:50

There was a small stormtrooper heading into the playground when I dropped off the DC at school today Grin

unchienandalusia · 05/03/2020 11:08

Not the point but my DS has plenty of Star Wars books!

recklessruby · 05/03/2020 11:12

Stick some glitter on? A sparkly dragon

Moonmelodies · 05/03/2020 11:16

If he wears trainers with his outfit for World Costume Day then he can be a sporty dragon.

RosiePoseyPanda · 05/03/2020 16:32

Well it appeared everyone ignored the brief as there was Peter Rabbit, a female GI Joe, Mary Poppins, hundreds of Spidermen, even more Elsa’s, lots of mouse ears, a highway rat and quite a few skeletons. Thank God that’s over for another year another week until Sports Relief / national butchers week / feet week when they’ll have to dress up as a Olympian / sausage / massive corn. Gin o’clock I think!!

Nobody would’ve listened! World book day is getting so silly now

Isthistrueor · 05/03/2020 16:38

Well as I've just seen a child dressed as Darth Vader for World Book Day

Darth Vader in my DD’s class too and a Marshmello from Fortnite and Doctor Who 🤷🏻‍♀️.
