World Book Day Costume

RosiePoseyPanda · 04/03/2020 21:55

I’ve spent a large part of today making a World sodding book day costume and my DC is very excited to be going to school tomorrow dressed as a dragon (Zog by Julia Donaldson).

Then I actually read the letter which was crumpled up at the bottom of his bag and rather than dress as a character like they have had to every other year since the beginning of time, this year the children are supposed to go to school dressed as a WORD. Three words have been suggested (sport, science, sparkly) I don’t know if these are the only words to use or whether they are just examples. It’s my own stupid fault for not reading the letter properly but in my defence I’m BF a teething baby and haven’t slept for what seems like forever.

I spoke to DS about changing the costume but he was so disappointed. When I asked him what he wanted to do he just said “you decide mummy” with a tear in his eye. So now I feel like the world’s worst mother!!!

AIBU to just send him in the Zog costume?

YABU - of course he shouldn’t wear the costume, all the other kids will be wearing football kits and he’ll be bullied for the rest of his life.
YANBU - just send him dressed as a the blummin dragon.

The word he is going as is ‘dragon’ then surely. Grin

elliejjtiny · 04/03/2020 21:57

Send him as a dragon. Dragon is a word.

Strandliv · 04/03/2020 21:58

Or has he got a toy boat... he can go as ‘dragon boat’ which fits sport?

Elliemayclampett · 04/03/2020 21:58

Dragon is a great word

RightOnTheEdge · 04/03/2020 21:59

Let him be the word dragon and don't worry about it Smile

Ruralretreating · 04/03/2020 22:00

Send him in the Zog costume as the word “perseverance”. I love Zog!

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/03/2020 22:00

More parents will have done the same! Let him be Zog!

PumpkinP · 04/03/2020 22:00

Do people really stick to this? My dcs school always does “themes” last year it was Peter Pan. Ignored it as ds wanted to be the hungry caterpillar, this year it’s “fairytales” again I’m ignoring it.

Strandliv · 04/03/2020 22:01

Really he won’t be the only one... everyone expects to dress as a book character. Let him. He will look awesome.

atomicblonde30 · 04/03/2020 22:01

I’d send him in, don’t think people will care at all. My son goes as a princess most years and he’s had no nasty comments yet.

mumoftwo1975 · 04/03/2020 22:05

I'm going as a word too. Was disappointed to not be able to use the costume Id bought ready. Our school has done usual book characters for years. Weeks ago we were reminded it's wbd. Last Friday we were told to be a word instead 😩
Stick to the dragon outfit, the word could be mythical?

Pascha · 04/03/2020 22:09

The word is Zog, surely? Let him wear the costume, nobody will care or comment probably.

Toseland · 04/03/2020 22:12

Can you add some sparkly glitter to Zog?! Or maybe his word is ‘fierce’ or ‘mythical’. Hope he enjoys his costume x

Toybox88 · 04/03/2020 22:20

There's no issue here. The word is zog.

YouGoTeIIDrDreDat · 04/03/2020 22:25

Scaly

YouGoTeIIDrDreDat · 04/03/2020 22:25

fiery

YouGoTeIIDrDreDat · 04/03/2020 22:26

persistent annoying

Coffeeisnecessary · 04/03/2020 22:26

The word could be fierce? Let him wear the dragon costume!

YouGoTeIIDrDreDat · 04/03/2020 22:29

Mine got words suggestions too ''if it was easier''
DS is also Zog - a red dragon tesco onesie I bought last Autumn. I might shove a gold star on.
I am not stressing about any of it. Otherwise both will go in uniform with
Rebel/Refusenik/Contrary as the sodding word Wink

Reginabambina · 04/03/2020 22:31

Obviously he’s going as the word ‘dragon’ then?

Nixen · 04/03/2020 22:33

‘Mythical’ or ‘magical’. Sorted

Littleshortcake · 04/03/2020 22:35

Fierce is a brilliant suggestion!
I think you deserve a medal making a costume with a small baby.

Grobagsforever · 04/03/2020 22:36

The solution is so obviously that he is the word 'zog'

Get some sleep OP, the costume sounds fantastic

RosiePoseyPanda · 04/03/2020 22:44

I’m not sure what possessed me littleshortcake, in my sleep deprived state it seemed like a good idea then once I’d started I was too stubborn to give up!

The word ‘dragon’ will be fine but doesn’t really fit the sport, science or sparkle theme. If indeed they are the only permitted words and not just examples Confused

Lesson to self - read school letters more carefully. Hopefully this won’t be one of those events he talks about to his therapist in the future Grin

Our school are doing dress as an adjective this year. My DS is gutted as he had his costume picked out for ages. The school have ruined his life apparently!
