To expect people to read the sign?!

Thoughts?

I have a emergency services shift worker DH and a grumpy poorly baby upstarts sleeping today.

So one out a note on my door which reads "Please do not disturb, thank you"

It's an A4 piece of paper folded in to literally sellotaped in the middle of the door. Impossible not to see.

Already today I've had:

Amazon delivery for next door (I don't order parcels to come when I know DH is going to be asleep)
Workman from over the road asking me to move my car (from my designated and owned parking space)
Random door knocker with nonsense leaflet that could've just come through the letterbox it's junk anyway

All ignore it and knock! --

Why are people so ignorant?!

that would piss me off so so much. did you ask if they could see the sign?

GinDaddy · 26/02/2020 10:54

YANBU at all. People should read.

but they don't - and you have all the evidence to prove that.

So change the approach. Why have an A4 piece of paper "folded in" - why not make it full A4, no fold, huge black letters, saying

"I WORK NIGHTS AT A&E

PLEASE DON'T KNOCK AS I'M SLEEPING!"

Make it as clear as possible and then people will do what you want.

Flutteringsatlast · 26/02/2020 10:56

Personally I would report the Amazon driver.
Last week one left a parcel at my ndn even though left instructions on my order not to.
I was in the house sat at the front waiting for the parcel!!
I emailed the feedback page to suggest they teach the drivers how to knock on the correct door!

GinDaddy · 26/02/2020 10:58

@Flutteringsatlast

Hmm
EmmiJay · 26/02/2020 10:59

Mute the door bell or stick the note over the knocker/letterbox. When DD was napping as a newborn during the day, I did all of this and then some heavy fisted oaf banged on my door. I opened that front door ao fast and was (verbally) all over him like a squirrel!

Flutteringsatlast · 26/02/2020 10:59

My ndn has a new baby and specifically told them not to leave a parcel there.
Surely doing the job you are paid for correctly isn't too much to expect?

Frothybothie · 26/02/2020 11:01

Do they actually RING the doorbell? Despite having said doorbell I find delivery drivery knock.

AJPTaylor · 26/02/2020 11:17

All delivery drivers seen to adopt banging on the door first and looking for clues after!
Yanbu but apart from covering the front door in memory foam I don't know what to suggest

boats · 26/02/2020 11:23

Do you confront them about it when you open the door? "Can you not read?" I'd be absolutely fuming!

tiddlerthefish · 26/02/2020 11:27

I don't have a doorbell, I have a knocker and the note is taped literally just underneath it!

Yes I did say to all three of them 'can you not read the sign?' Shrugs, a 'sorry' from the leaflet lady and the workmen just said 'well we need you to move, our van is too big to get in the other space with your car there!'. I said no and shut the door.

I am parked perfectly in the middle of my parking space. Normally I would move over just to be helpful but not today.

@GinDaddy That's a typo on my OP (so many typos sorry everyone).

It's an A4 sheet folded in two, with huge black sharpie'd letters on it. You can't miss it!

Many people can't read.
My house has a number on the door and on wheelie bins next to the door but I still get people knocking on the door asking if it is number (something else, sometimes quite different).
I regularly get other people's post.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 26/02/2020 11:53

Stick the notice OVER the knocker - i.e. tape it above the knocker and to ensure it doesn't fly off in a stiff breeze or whatever, tape it underneath the knocker (so they cannot access the knocker)

how many times can someone put the word knocker into a sentence Grin Grin

Molly2017 · 26/02/2020 11:58

YANBU
I regularly put a sign cello taped over the door bell and switch it off when the baby (aged 2!) is napping.
I still regularly get people banging on the door from window cleaners to delivery drivers. I always rush to open so not to wake DD, do a shush sign with my finger, point to the sign and close the door.
No one has knocked twice... yet.
I never engage with them.

iswhois · 26/02/2020 12:05

People are selfish so it doesn't surprise me

Put a sign up saying you have a high stress job and need to sleep in the day will be making complaints to the company if you are disturbed!

MotherofKitties · 26/02/2020 12:16

I once did this with a sheet of a4 and put something along the lines of 'trying to get baby to sleep - no cold callers please' and put today's date on it.

It worked every time I put one up apart from once, it was a cold caller/religious type person and when they knocked I wrenched open the front door, glowered at her, asked if she could read, and when she said yes I told her to read the sign and fuck off.

I was rude but I didn't care. I hate people cold calling and it was ignorant of her to ignore the sign. Since then I got a little sign off amazon which says 'no cold callers, religious groups, leaflets etc' and it's worked a treat.

Floribundance · 26/02/2020 12:17

I’d cover the door knocker with the sign and write doorbell broken please call mobile.

eenymeenyminyme · 26/02/2020 12:21

Tape the door knocker down so they can't use it, then they'll read the sign. If they can't knock they'll look for why they can't.

Christmadtree · 26/02/2020 12:23

I hate this. I have a newborn and a deaf dog who doesn't hear much but does manage to hear every bang at the front door and goes mad barking each time.

Recently we've had loads of takeaway drivers coming to the door at 9 and 10pm, knowing fine well that we didn't order but as we're end of the row, to ask where number such and such is. So annoying and different drivers/takeaways each time. So inconsiderate!

PixieDustt · 26/02/2020 12:24

Oh little tossers!
I hate this!!!
We had an alarm door to door salesman knock at 9:10pm the other night...

Brefugee · 26/02/2020 12:24

Big sign taped over the knocker: "Don't knock. Doberman can open the door"?

paap1975 · 26/02/2020 12:25

Alternatively put up a Coronavirus Quarantine Zone sign. That should put them off!

PixieDustt · 26/02/2020 12:25

Pressed post to soon. We ignored the door he then started to thud it he eventually gave up and shoved the leaflets so hard through the door they were ripped (not that I care) woke 7mo DS up though!

SeaToSki · 26/02/2020 12:27

Change the sign to read

Infected with Corona Virus. Stay at least 2 m back and call my cell phone

Bet no one knocks again 😂

SuperficialSuzie · 26/02/2020 12:27

When I worked nights I put a sign up at the door that said in capitals "GRUMPY NIGHT WORKER TRYING TO SLEEP. DO NOT KNOCK UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SHOUTED AT"

It worked although the DC were very embarrassed
