Fucking 70 quid for a cake????

As title says. Quoted 'from' 70 quid for a Christening cake. This was based on a 6" square cake with 4 sponge layers. Not tiers. Buttercream icing. Any decs toppers etc would be extra and from 8 - 15 quid!
Am i missing something?? How the f does a cake cost that much?

Yeah I've looked at this for a different occasion (birthday not christening) and some places it was £60 upwards or even once place £90 onwards. We are going to steal some ideas off their Instagram page and try and make it at home for a fraction of the cost.

Same reason it costs more to pay a hairdresser rather that cut your own. You want professional standards, you pay for them.

I'd only pay that much for an epic themed cake , like the whole of Hogwarts intricately done !

The local bakers does larger ones for far less. Used them before but wanted a change and the lady who used to do my ds birthday cakes gave it up.

I know good ingredients alone for large cake can cost around £30/40, add the time and prep then it's really not that much

I'm in a cheap part of the country and have paid £60+ for similar. I'm a not a baker but I imagine it will take several hours to professionally bake and ice a cake. So even if they only charge their time at £10 an hour, that could be £40+ in labour before you factor in ingredients, electricity, insurance etc.

Sorry but I used to be a baker....would you be prepared to work for less than minimum wage??? If not, why expect a baker too? Equipment and training comes at a strap price. Can’t believe people are still this ignorant!!

That's normal. Go to a supermarket if you don't want to pay it

There's an amazing bakery near me that sells absolutely awesome cakes, they charge easy £150+ for cakes to serve 50-70 people.
We use them every time we have a party because you know what you're getting, they taste amazing and they're reliable.
As with every aspect of life, you get what you pay for.

Go to M&S. We were quoted £950 for a wedding cake. £80 in high quality ingredients and about five hours of work as there was nothing intricate about our selection and the decorations were bought already made. Total rip off. This person wasn't even registered with the council or insured. I was all set for doing it myself until a family member offered.

Costco for £13.00, well last time I was there.

@bigchris you’d have a job finding anyone, even the most basic of bakers to complete a hogwarts castle for that price 🤣 my god, is it not the same as any other service? I’m sure you could get your next door neighbour to have a look under your bonnet but would you trust him instead of a qualified mechanic?! 🤔

Add up how much it costs for the eggs, sugar, butter etc to make your cake. Add in electricity/gas, belong pans, vanilla extract, equipment, cake board, cake box etc then complain. I had a friend ask me to make a "simple" first birthday cake, because her baker wanted £70. By the time I'd added up ingredients (look at the cost of a bottle of vanilla extract) I was at neat £40. Add in the time it would've take me £70 seems like a bargain.

Honestly, to cook and ice a 4 layer (not tier) cake would probably cost £25+ in (quality) ingredients and icing and take half a day. Seems about right to me.

I think that sounds like a fair price, you get what you pay for.

Yea its a simple cake im wanting. Not a cake boss creation.

And give over with the 'professional standards, time, ingredients etc' am well aware of all that.
Given the area im in and what other local cake makers here charge i thought it was a quite a jump in price.
