CaveMum · 20/02/2020 09:42

Where are the pledges from politicians? Where is the outrage from social commentators? Where are the the police and the judiciary?

We are women, we are disposable.

There is no outrage, which is why the Femicide Census is needed.

Sad Angry

chomalungma · 20/02/2020 09:57

Awful reading.

From the Guardian

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/feb/20/over-half-of-uk-women-killed-by-men-die-hands-current-ex-partner

The Femicide Census produces a report every year of women killed by men in the UK. It aims to provide “data on the killings of women by men and aims to highlight patterns and trends which can feed into policy and service responses and in particular prevention and early intervention”, according to the report.

“There is a high degree of normalisation of men’s violence against women and no end of excuses or rationales assumed and extended to perpetrators often without foundation,” said Ingala Smith, a co-founder of the census.

She added that closure and under-resourcing of specialist women-only services meant there was little option for some women looking to leave “violent, controlling and abusive relationships”

One can only imagine what impact the closing of refuges and the defunding of them due to austerity has had.

CaveMum · 20/02/2020 10:09

There is not a single article on the BBC website about this today. If you search for “Femicide census” the most recent article it brings up is from December 2017 🤬

Nothing in the Daily Mail either.

They prefer discussing women's bodies instead of discussing male violence and VAWG

MitziK · 20/02/2020 10:24

Only wimmin, innit?

chomalungma · 20/02/2020 10:29

TBH - there doesn't seem to be much outrage on MN either.

Hont1986 · 20/02/2020 10:30

Perhaps there's no outrage because it doesn't show anything new?

And some of the statistics don't mean anything to most people in isolation, e.g. "Overkilling was evident in over half the femicides (83 cases, 56%)" - is that higher than normal? Lower?

CaveMum · 20/02/2020 10:37

Hont1986 the 2017 Femicide Census was the first to include stats on “overkilling”. Then the figure was 58 (41.7%) cases, suggesting the brutality used is increasing.

OldQueen1969 · 20/02/2020 10:46

It may show nothing new, but in this media driven age it is telling that it is not being jumped upon by the People who have embraced climate change and environmental issues or other political and cultural issues which are also "nothing new" but have been forcibly publicised into the human psyche in recent years.

Maybe abused women and children need better PR?

It is quite sickening that because the worst case scenarios eg the recent Brisbane case are relatively rare, the run up to it, which is not, is still often written off as hysteria on the part of the reporting woman (and children) . Since Eve (allegedly) handed Adam the apple, women have been seen as the source of temptation and deceit, and their attempts at autonomy and self preservation regarded as an impertinence. Convincing women and the rest of society that women are mad when they speak verifiable truth sometimes seems like a sport in itself, and their biology is used as a weapon against them.

It sickens me.

AngelsSins · 20/02/2020 10:47

It went up by 10% in 2019 as well, but no one cares. When I read about the stabbings in London and people’s outrage, I wonder why people don’t have the same outrage by women being killed in their own homes at such a high rate, but it’s probably because a lot of people think the man was “pushed to it”.

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 20/02/2020 10:52

I feel sad and angry reading this

Shocking this is not widely reported

ohfourfoxache · 20/02/2020 10:59

If the press aren’t going to report this adequately then I wonder if we should ALL take action to ensure that the findings of this report are shared. I wonder if HQ could mark this thread somehow 🤔

PicsInRed · 20/02/2020 11:06

They're the wrong kind of women, evidently.

Women are the wrong kind of women.

There's no concern simply because it's women.

Women are expendable to the wants and tantrums of men, who must be comforted of their pain and understood at any cost.

lilmisstoldyouso · 20/02/2020 11:12

Here we go again.

Hmm

31 million men. 147 are murdering lunatics.

Hardly an epidemic.

Thousands of people are killed each year from the Flu.

Where's the outrage?

Hoik · 20/02/2020 11:18

And here come the NAMALT types...

chomalungma · 20/02/2020 11:21

31 million men. 147 are murdering lunatics

Well - it's true that most men don't murder women.

And the number of deaths are very very very low compared to the number of women in the UK.

However - domestic violence is common, funding has been cut for services such as refuges, rape prosecutions are every low compared to the number of rapes reported and a lot of these issues can be tackled with serious investment and discussion.

MitziK · 20/02/2020 11:22

Flu is a virus. A virus doesn't kill you because you rejected it by getting a flu jab. A virus doesn't murder your unborn child because you wanted to keep yourself safe. A virus doesn't lie in wait, watching you leave your house for work, break in sit there with weapons, looking forward to the moment you walk in and set eyes on it. A virus doesn't beg, plead and promise things will be different this time, so could you please meet them to talk about it.

A virus does not have consciousness. A virus does not feel entitlement, ownership and rage.

That;s the difference. A natural, but potentially fatal, process - or a deliberate decision to cause pain, fear, to annihilate and feel power.

messolini9 · 20/02/2020 11:22

Oooh, nice goading @lilmisstoldyouso.

"Only" 147 murderers is the tip of the iceberg. These are the violent men who commit the ultimate atrocity - we're not seeing the thousands upon thousands who stop short of murder, & "only" (that word again) abuse, violate & harm women at home.

BlueMoonRising · 20/02/2020 11:24

*31 million men. 147 are murdering lunatics.

Hardly an epidemic*

So we shouldn't be concerned?

If 149 women being killed by men is not unreasonable, is 150 okay? What about 151, 155, 200, 500?

What number is enough for it to be taken seriously?

Hoik · 20/02/2020 11:25

Not all men are murderers of women however the majority of murdered women are murdered by men. The majority of men who are murdered are murdered by men.

We need to have a discussion about male violence that is not drowned out by cries of "my husband would never!" and "most men are decent!" particularly as one of the most commonly said things about murders is that "he always seemed like such a nice man, kept himself to himself mostly..."

AngelsSins · 20/02/2020 11:27

A lot of these murders are the end result of domestic violence, so dismissing this as not a big deal, also ignores and brushes over the epidemic that is domestic violence. Still, if you don’t care about a woman being murdered, I doubt you’d even blink over women being beaten and raped.

CaveMum · 20/02/2020 11:30

Sod off lilmiss. If you have nothing constructive to add take your righteous indignation somewhere else.

If you think that it’s acceptable that women are murdered by men that they know at a rate of 1 every 3 days then there’s nothing for you to comment on is there.
