To get my nose pierced?

So... bit of a debate...

I'm in a senior role at work in an organisation where there are few women at that level. My mum is 60 tomorrow and she's wanted her nose pierced for ages, I have too! I want to go and do it with her but I know... whether it's right or wrong, that eyebrows will be raised at work. It may even affect my ability to rise further up the ranks.

I am slightly rebellious underneath so I really want to do it but suspect I may regret it if it does impact my career...

So AIBU unreasonable to just do it tomorrow - or would you wait?

YADNBU OP. If you like it, go for it!

You don’t have earrings then?

Well no, I don't. Not everybody does. I've never had my ears pierced. It doesn't appeal.

YummyChipCurryDip · 21/02/2020 10:40

suggests it causes you an unnatural level of distress

Not distress at all. It just makes my eyes water when I see face piercings. It's caused amusement to one or two of my friends. Ears are ok. Holes in ears don't make my eyes water.

You have to admit that is not the normal response to seeing piercings xD

@GeePipe you said:

"I hugely disagree that many people cringe and that a majority dislike nose piercings. I also find that a really grim and a culturally insensitive white person type remark. For some cultures including mine nose piercings have meaning (not that i subscribe to outdated traditions but its one i find beautiful.)"

Apologies GeePipe, I did not mean to disrespect anyone's culture. Yes, I'm white, and most of my friends and work colleagues are also white, so maybe that accounts for the reason why many of the people I know don't have nose piercings and many of them have said they dislike the sight of them. It's not grim to express that dislike, whatever colour a person is, but I accept that maybe my view isn't the majority view, and it would be difficult to prove it, either way.

I'm curious - what particular cultural meaning/significance does a nose piercing have, in your culture?

I'm 40 and have my nose pierced 3 times. I do it coz I want it and there isnt an age limit..no one has commented to my face about them and what I dont know dont hurt me. If the time comes when I no longer want them I shall take them out. Til then my face my rules.

Another here to say go for it :)

Had mine done 9 years ago at the age of 42 - my new DP is a piercer of 30 years standing and I'd always wanted it done but had been too straight laced and afraid of judgement up to then. But I thought why the heck not? My nose, my choice, and actually hardly anybody noticed!

I wear a ring now and its just part of me.... I hardly notice it myself lol!

Micro-dermals, on the other hand, which look very pretty are a minefield. had one in my cleavage until a shower scrunchie put paid to it. THAT made my eyes water and was purely down to not paying proper attention. I might get another..... I might not. Life is, after all, about options and living in the moment.......

Another one saying go for it!! I had mine done when I was 17 in Kensington Market where a bloke did piercings at his clothes stall. You literally sat on a footstool amongst the jeans and leather and he pierced you!! I'm now almost 46 and have never taken it out. I have a normal small hoop earring in my nose. It doesn't get yucky when you have a cold, it doesn't smell and you can pick your nose as and when the fancy takes you!! I don't even register that it's in any more. I love it.

I had mine done a couple of years ago. I’m 33. I love it. It did take a while to heal though and went through some crusty phases! I wear a tiny little stud now with a clear stone
