To get my nose pierced?

sandybeaches74 · 19/02/2020 22:47

So... bit of a debate...

I'm in a senior role at work in an organisation where there are few women at that level. My mum is 60 tomorrow and she's wanted her nose pierced for ages, I have too! I want to go and do it with her but I know... whether it's right or wrong, that eyebrows will be raised at work. It may even affect my ability to rise further up the ranks.

I am slightly rebellious underneath so I really want to do it but suspect I may regret it if it does impact my career...

So AIBU unreasonable to just do it tomorrow - or would you wait?

Im almost 46 and had my tragus and navel pierced back in November...I love them both and am considering having my nose done too....is it painful? I didnt find my tragus or navel painful at all.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/02/2020 17:10

It’s not painful. I have a professional job and have a ring in my nose.

sandybeaches74 · 20/02/2020 17:16

Looks like I'm going to get one soon then! We didn't go today but maybe tomorrow Grin

I like teeny tiny jewel studs, not rings. Go for it. Make sure you go to a reputable piercing studio

Kanga83 · 20/02/2020 17:38

Your nose, your body. Do as you please with it. Not my cup of tea, I think they look tacky but it's not my body so you shouldn't care what others think.

I agree they look tacky. And I'd guess slightly ridiculous to the majority. But there must be some argument 'for' poking holes in your face that are open to bleeding and infection. So many people do it that there must be something beneficial for them. I'd be interested to know what that is. My theory is , rebellion against the norm. Nothing about piercings is attractive. I perceive it as 'look at me and what I've done to my face. I'm out there'

I’m a head of department and I have a septum piercing. It’s great because it’s a stealth piercing - you can put a horseshoe shaped barbel in it and flip it up when you don’t want it seen. My bosses don’t know I have it.

At the risk of sounding dead ignorant, I just would like to know 'why' you have a septum piercing. What's the benefit? You have it but you flip it up so nobody can see it. When people 'can' see it - what's the point? How does it improve your life?

Deckthehallswithlotsofcake · 20/02/2020 21:35

Yes, do get a nose piercing. It will help all your coworkers lose weight, when you go to work with a slight cold and the snot slowly escapes from the holes on the top of your nose. Obesity is a serious problem in Britain so you will be doing a charitable thing, really.

Unfortunately, I was already underweight when I studied with a girl with three nose piercings, so I was quite sad to lose my appetite.

meow1989 · 20/02/2020 21:44

I have my nose pierced and have a professional, client facing role with a degree of seniority. Never had an eyebrow raised. I do wear a stud as opposed to a ring but that's just my choice - I like a ring when I'm off work and being "fun meow"Grin

In my industry I've worked with senior managers with piercings, unnatural hair colour and even facial tattoos.

Craftycorvid · 20/02/2020 21:45

Deckthehalls No idea where your co-workers got piercings that big, but mine’s fine with a cold and nothing ‘leaks’ Confused

Do it, OP! And your mum. I’ve never regretted it. Swapped out my stud for a ring asap, and I do have a surgical steel one which is hypo-allergenic and looks good.

My tattoo is a recent acquisition and I’m really pleased with that too Grin

I too find nose piercings unsightly and off-putting. We seem to be the minority. We just have to suck it up. I can't have a face to face conversation with someone who has face piercings. My eyes water so badly and I can't meet their eyes when there's a huge bolt thing in the eyebrow.
I mean, what is that about? Really?

YummyChipCurryDip · 20/02/2020 21:50

unnatural hair colour

I love that. It's joyful and fun and lifts the spirits. Holes in faces, not so much.

Fruityb · 20/02/2020 21:51

I want mine doing very much but doubt I ever will as my husband would hate it. I have 3 lobe piercings in each ear, helix in both sides, conch in both sides and a tragus in one ear. I want another one...

They don’t enhance my life in the slightest as someone else asked - but I like having them very much.

Ontheboardwalk · 20/02/2020 21:58

Many many years ago my teenage friend got her nose pierced by a gun and her head nearly hit the ceiling in shock and pain. It put me right off.

I’ve worked with many professional women with nose piercings, in male dominated industries, and no eyebrow has been raised or nasty comments made.

You and your mum should get yourselves booked in and go for it. Please though go to a proper tattoo/piercing parlour. You might have to book but will be worth it.

BiByeBaby · 20/02/2020 22:01

Lol at people expecting the area to be leaking when you have a cold. How big do you think the hole is? Why are you so interested in someone's nose that it puts you off your lunch?

Go for it OP I've never met anyone IRL that would be offended/feel sick/not give you a promotion if you were the best person for the job, because of a nose piercing

Kiki275 · 20/02/2020 22:03

How about a body piercing instead? Something you can cover up but can think privately to yourself "if only they knew". Best of both worlds x

motherheroic · 20/02/2020 22:11

Make sure you get the screw on nose stud. It's a little bit long but it gives plenty of room for swelling.

FredericaBimmel · 20/02/2020 23:21

What’s the benefit of any jewellery? I like the way it looks. :)

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 20/02/2020 23:27

Most people don't notice my discreet jewel. When they do, they never comment negatively. They are surprised that a boring old fart has a bit of an edgy look! Fyi. I am at the top of my trade in a male orientated industry.

INeedToGetHealthy · 20/02/2020 23:27

I have body piercings but don't have my nose pierced as it doesn't appeal to me. If you want it done, go to a professional piercer. As they will get the positioning correct for your nose and will give the best aftercare advice.
Your body, your choice.

YummyChipCurryDip · 21/02/2020 01:42

Not wanting to be argumentative. But a ring or a necklace or a bracelet is jewellery.
Having holes punched in your body to accommodate it is a step beyond normalcy.
Do it. Have it. I really don't give a shiny shite.
I just cringe when I see it and it makes my eyes water.

Something that is inserted into you body does not count as simple jewellery.

Fruityb · 21/02/2020 07:36

You don’t have earrings then?

And just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it is not jewellery

Craftycorvid · 21/02/2020 07:46

Well, people of all cultures have pierced and marked their bodies decoratively since forever, so it seems a pretty human thing to want to do. Smile

Sleepthief · 21/02/2020 08:46

I don't give a shiny shit

The fact that you've posted more times on this thread than the OP, each post slightly more frantic in its questioning, suggests it causes you an unnatural level of distress. If you can't have a face-to-face conversation with someone with piercings, that, I would suggest, says more about you than the piercings.

I see people all the time wearing things I wouldn't be seen dead in, but does it trouble me? Do I desperately need to find out why they would want to look like that? Or am I able to accept that we are not all the same, do not all like the same things? I love tattoos, piercings, multicoloured hair and unusual styles of dress, but I know that not everyone else does. And that's ok. I can even admire and genuinely compliment someone with a completely different style to me Confused
