AIBU to wonder if this could be more? Think I’m in love with my best friend

Have name changed for this because my other friend is on here and knows my username and I think I might combust with embarrassment if she came across this and clocked it was me (the wedding details might be outing).

I briefly “dated” a guy as a young teen and then we became really good friends and stayed that way, pretty much best friends ever since - purely platonic.
He’s a very attractive guy but I’ve genuinely never ever felt anything for him other than platonic love. Mutual friends have always said they don’t know why we aren’t together and some of my newer female friends have commented that they think there could be something there, but until recently I’ve always thought it was funny and brushed it off. I would have gone as far as to say we were like brother and sister!

Recently we went to a wedding together as I needed a plus one, and I don’t know what happened but it’s like I’ve suddenly seen him in a new light. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, we had a great night as always when we are out but it’s like something has clicked in my brain and now I can’t stop thinking about him.

We are going to another wedding together on Friday, I’m returning the plus one favour and I’m really ridiculously nervous! I feel like I’m going to act weirdly or something or get drunk and say something and we’ve been friends for nearly 17 years now so I don’t want to ruin it! I’ve been avoiding him all last week because I think I’ll just go red or make it really obvious that something has changed.

I’m mortified at being such a cliche and reading this post back it sounds like the set up
For a VERY bad romcom. I’m a bit beside myself. I don’t know what to do about it, if anything at all, and how on earth I tell if he could like me more than friends (inwardly cringing).
Jesus I’m too old for this shit.

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 22/02/2020 12:39

What if she never comes back. What if we never find out how this ends. I will have to make up an ending and convince myself it happened.

BaolFan · 22/02/2020 12:47

I'm totally invested in this now.

PS. I can recommend marrying your best friend. I did it 14 years ago Grin

Dozer · 22/02/2020 12:49

DH has friends who got together at an event like this, they took Monday off work. booked another night at and stayed at the hotel. Wonder if OP is doing similar!

QueenofmyPrinces · 22/02/2020 12:58

My guess is that somehow, amongst the shagging, her mobile phone got damaged and she has got no other way of accessing MN to update is....

Maybe her phone got wet or something....

Lorddenning1 · 22/02/2020 13:00

Give her a chance, she will update later on i reckon

captainamericassexybeard · 22/02/2020 14:21

Oh gosh, sorry! I didn’t realise so many of you were following so closely Grin

Slightly mortified by the ever so slightly tipsy update that I don’t actually recall posting Blush

So... deep breath ...here goes...

Had lovely day, everything was going really well. We had been kind of flirty all day, he kept making comments/compliments about my dress...

Then I almost blew it. He gave me the perfect opener - producing a photo from his wallet that he had found in the week, a picture of us in an embarrassing moody teenage pose when we were dating! We were laughing at it and chatting and I said do you ever wonder what would have happened if we had carried on like these two (bride and groom) and not broken up as kids...
And then we got interrupted by slightly tipsy Competition (the one who I thought had her eye on him) and she said “oh I’m not interrupting anything am I?”
He said “actually...”
And I for some reason said “oh no of course not” because I am a fucking moron. He looked REALLY put out and I thought fuck I’ve fucking fucked it up that was my chance.

Anyway to cut a long story short, ended up with them slow dancing, me feeling sorry for myself over many a glass of wine and in the end I sloped off to my hotel room as I couldn’t bear it. I text him to say I was calling it a night.
And then he turned up at hotel room and asked what was going on, and well... I was a bit drunk by this point and blurted that I couldnt stand seeing her draped all over him...
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Turns out he was going to say something about how he felt when I asked the question about the photo and then doubted himself when I said Competition wasn’t interrupting anything...

He was trying to find a way to start the conversation again but I didn’t pick up on it and in the end accepted a dance with Competition because he figured if it bothered me... he would know about it... and then could tell me...

So basically we are both knobs Grin

And now we are in the car on the way home and I can’t stop grinning...

The weird thing is... it isn’t weird at all!

I have a tear in my eye and I don't even know you!! That's so so sweet and lovely. I can't believe he planned to say the exactly same thing to you. He must have been bricking it too (but probably hadn't started a thread on Dadsnet about it. That just makes it even more special. So happy for you.
