To demand that GROWN is recognised as a colour.

My 13 year old has just discovered (how...!!) that my 16 year old and I both have hazel eyes.

However she is demanding that the word Hazel is removed from the eye colour chart and replaced with grown (to rhyme with brown) which is “more accurate and not wrong” (unlike hazel which is inaccurate and wrong)

It would describe my husband's eye colour perfectly. YANBU.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/02/2020 16:00

To be fair... this DD has form. She was the one who can’t understand why sanitary towels aren’t known as Knicker Stickers (hence my username)

Yep I have grown eyes. They are definitely not brown

Dilbertian · 13/02/2020 16:09

Trouble is "hazel eyes" sound as beautiful as they are, whereas "grown eyes" sound like you've fallen over on an allotment. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MargotLovedTom1 · 13/02/2020 16:12

I prefer breen Wink.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/02/2020 16:16

I agree with the allotment analogy. I often say that DD1 was born in a blizzard - which she was - but it makes it sound like I had her in a ditch at the side of the road...

Breen is also an option but I suspect that may also be “wrong”. Lots of things are “wrong” in the opinion of DD2

OP posts:
Acrasia · 13/02/2020 16:17

Could you tell her that at least ‘breen’ isn’t a homonym?

BackBoiler · 13/02/2020 16:17

My son used to call trampolines "jumpolines" which did make perfect sense. I imagine he was a lot younger than your DD is. Anyway my point is she can say what she likes as long as it isn't offensive Smile

goose1964 · 13/02/2020 16:18

My dad and grandson both have hazel eyes. They're both happy with it being described cascsuch.

RheaRanged · 13/02/2020 16:25

Hazel is a nice sound, though, but grown sounds like a fungal infection

butterpuffed · 13/02/2020 16:26

I have grown eyes too , or should I call them khaki ? Wink

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/02/2020 16:34

DD2 would find khaki wrong. It’s not descriptive enough, and implies camouflage and she can actually see our eyes. (Despite not having a clue what colour they were until 90 minutes ago).

Grown may sound fungal but it is “accurate”. DD2 has her ways.

My partner's eyes ate this colour. We refer to our as murk.

anonymice · 13/02/2020 16:42

linguists call it 'grue' - many languages break up the colours green/grey/blue differently to English :)

Troels · 13/02/2020 16:42

Yes, Grown doesn't work. Mine I say are blue, as they don't have enough hazel to say hazel.
My Sister has more of an orangy ginger so we just say Hazel.
Ds2 has the green, orangy, ginger and brown all together. That could be Grown.

veewee · 13/02/2020 16:43

How old is you dd? She sounds amazing!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/02/2020 16:50

She is 13, and particularly particular.

SpoonBlender · 13/02/2020 16:55

Approved! Always a big fan of people who think like she does :)

Spaceman101 · 13/02/2020 16:59

Backboiler* we have jumpolines here too

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/02/2020 17:01

@SpoonBlender - Lordy, there are more of them...!!! I wish she was putting her laundry away rather than rewriting the acceptance list of eye colours

I thought this was going to be about wine bottle colours. Is it brown? Is it green? Who knows? Why is recycling so difficult?

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 13/02/2020 17:09

She must be related to my DS who came home from a play date fascinated by the fact they had white, yellow, brown and red ketchup. He'd only seen red ketchup before and his mind was blown. Mainly because we said white, yellow and brown ketchup were not actually called white, yellow and brown ketchup which he thought was plain stupid.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/02/2020 17:11

@TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig - your son is right. You are wrong. Says DD2

OP posts:
2018SoFarSoGreat · 13/02/2020 17:21

Can you please ask DD2 what color my eyes are? I often say ginger, but that is not quite right. They are brown but orange(ish) brown, lighter than brown, with a ginger tone. NOT brown I say.

Ask her please. She will know the answer. :)
