To ask what the best sofa bad you've ever slept on is?

My experience of sofa beds has always been pretty poor but I haven't stayed on one in ages and generally, though not always, they were pretty cheap things.

We have guests 3 or 4 times a year, for anything up to a fortnight at a time. We love having them and since it's often my lovely PiL I'd really like it to be comfortable when they stay. But I have no idea no idea what's good. There's lots of choice online but no way to know what the bed feels like and even in a store you don't really get a feel for what it would be like for an extended stay.

Has anyone stayed on a really comfortable sofa bed that they'd be happy on every night?

We spent a lot of money on a Designer's Guild one. It's amazing. It's our main sofa so needed to be extremely comfortable both as a sofa and a bed (my mil visits for a week at a time and we wanted her to have the very best nights sleep possible).

It's ridiculously light and easy to open up and we invested in a fabulous mattress topper which we put on top of the mattress to make it feel super luxurious as well as a top quality duvet, pillows and bedding.

She honestly says she sleeps better here than her own bed.

My friend has a wooden slatted one from John Lewis. It looks like a normal sofa but when you taken the cushions off it unfolds to reveal a wooden slatted base on legs with a fairly thin but very comfortable sprung mattress. I’ve stayed for a fortnight on it and woke up feeling great every morning and I’m the first to complain about a crap bed.

@ShirleyPhallus what’s the the fletcher like to sit on? I saw a lot of reviews for it that said it was too hard and impossible to properly relax on. Put me off somewhat.

LoisLittsLover · 11/02/2020 21:10

Ours is from John Lewis and is really comfy

ShirleyPhallus · 11/02/2020 21:27

@dollibob the actual sofa is fine and comfy, the hard bit is the arms really, you need a cushion or something in there. That is fine for us but I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen it as a main sofa

We bought a Relyon sofa bed nearly 20 years ago. It was our main sofa and only spare bed for about 5 years, and is still our only spare bed. DH and I sleep on it from time to time, it’s very comfy.

The Lycksele Lovas from ikea is very comfortable as long as you buy at least the 2nd most expensive of the 3 mattress choices. Don't get the cheapest mattress. Guests like it and we slept on it when doing building work and it was very comfortable though suited to those who prefer a firm bed. Could be softened with a topper I guess.

BUT... it has no arms so doesn't feel like a sofa when in sofa form.

Snaleandthewhail · 11/02/2020 22:58

Oh yes, we have the lycksele down as a permanent chairbed and often sleep in it. Rubbish as a sofa though.

@MrsWonderland - can you link?

Arseit · 11/02/2020 23:04

Someone once posted this link which I’ve saved as it’s very hard finding a sofa that looks good, with a sofabed that’s v comfy for guests. I don’t know if any of these are...

The Futon Company. We have a double and a single, guests have always commented how comfortable they are.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 13/02/2020 08:49

We have the IKEA corner sofa bed and it's very firm! Fine with a decent topper for occasional use but not sure I'd want to sleep on it every night.

We slept at a friend's on a Futon Sofa bed and it was incredibly comfy, so I'll be getting one of those when we downsize to fewer bedrooms.

ThunderGarlic · 13/02/2020 09:26

Another vote for The Futon Company with their highest grade futon mattress. For me it's just as comfortable as a bed. Having said that, I'm short and I do wonder if many standard sofa beds have the length for taller folk.

We’ve got the Hemnes day bed in our spare room/home office with IKEA mattresses on too. It’s so comfortable and large when pulled out and looks nice during the day. If DP is ill I sleep on it and get such a good sleep I stay in it an extra few nights!

Mine is made by a firm called Alstons, that I got from a local independent furniture store that has since closed.
I use it and let my guests have my bed - I have a one bedroom warehouse style flat, and the cat kicks off if I try to shut her in the bedroom if someone stays over. I find it super comfy (probably better as a bed than a sofa tbh, it's a bit too "upright" as a sofa)
I think there were different mattress options and I went for the top level, even though its only used occasionally.

I know this thread is a few months old but recently have been recommended SOFABARN. It may be worth looking on the website. Good reviews
