To ask what the best sofa bad you've ever slept on is?

My experience of sofa beds has always been pretty poor but I haven't stayed on one in ages and generally, though not always, they were pretty cheap things.

We have guests 3 or 4 times a year, for anything up to a fortnight at a time. We love having them and since it's often my lovely PiL I'd really like it to be comfortable when they stay. But I have no idea no idea what's good. There's lots of choice online but no way to know what the bed feels like and even in a store you don't really get a feel for what it would be like for an extended stay.

Has anyone stayed on a really comfortable sofa bed that they'd be happy on every night?

Watching with interest

None! Have tried ‘deluxe” sofa beds , futons , fold outs .. all terrible .
So annoying as we paid a fortune to upgrade our corner suite when we had it , to include a so called deluxe mattress for it and it was like sleeping on springs .
This was one from dfs

IndigoHexagon · 11/02/2020 17:39

My mum used to have one that if you didn’t know was a sofabed, you wouldn’t have guessed. The bed part was hidden in the base and you removed the seat cushions to lift it ou, and the metal frame with spring mattress then folded our. It was bed height, and felt exactly like a real bed and was very comfortable. I’ll see if I can find a similar one online

Does it have to be a sofa bed? The ikea Hemnes with the right mattress is perfect and very comfortable. We went with the more expensive ikea mattresses that would fit. One coil springs and one memory foam because that's the preference of our usual guests.
It's a day bed and looks very nice as well as serving a function.

The ClicClac type are the best imo. We slept on sofa beds for a couple of years when we were all squicjed in together as these type were so comfy. I think they are properly sprung. We got ours second hand but they looked like the attached.

Friheten corner sofa bed from Ikea! Everyone who sleeps on it says it's so comfy! 😃

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2020 18:04

Another vote for Clic Clac, I was lucky enough to pick one up second hand for peanuts. It was comfortable and sturdy enough to use as a sofa, and we used it every day.

Northernsoullover · 11/02/2020 18:05

The Friheten definitely! Its beautiful. I slept like a log on it.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 11/02/2020 18:08

Another vote for the corner one from ikea. They're a really good size too. When we were choosing one I thought all the ones where you flipped down the back were very narrow and not big enough to sleep two people comfortably. My db's sofa bed is narrow, I hate sleeping in it when we visit.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/02/2020 18:12

I spent a long time looking at sofa beds when we moved in to our house for the exact reasons you state

We bought a memory foam mattress sofa bed from habitat which is lighter than air. Basically you have to spend over £1k to get a comfortable one, I disagree with the clic clack ones or anything ikea, they’re aren’t that comfy and you can tell you’re either on a sofa bed when it’s as a sofa or when it’s as a bed

RuudGullitOnAShed · 11/02/2020 18:17

One from the Futon Company with the highest spec futon - it was similar to this one

uhhuhyeahok · 11/02/2020 18:41

We have one from loaf. Might be called the chit chat or something like that. Expensive but it has a thick mattress so is super comfy. I've slept on it and it was much nicer than other sofa beds I've slept on.

Purpleartichoke · 11/02/2020 18:42

The only semi decent one was a futon that folded lengthwise. So the hinged part ran from head to toe and it was possible to avoid sleeping on it.

Namechangeforthegamechange · 11/02/2020 18:43

We have friheten from ikea with a mattress topper that we use every night it’s super comfy

Snaleandthewhail · 11/02/2020 18:46

We have the Farlov from ikea. It’s very comfy, with a thick and full width double mattress.

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 11/02/2020 18:52

IKEA Freiheten.

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/02/2020 19:23

Thank you all!

Gives me a starting point (though more suggestions welcome!).

I tried Friheten in Ikea and thought it uncomfortable. It's interesting to see so many people suggesting it, maybe I should try again.

One thing I've been worried about with something where the back folds down like the Friheten and the Click Clacks I've seen is maneuvering it each time so that people can get in and out easily as it will be up against the wall. Has that been an issue at all?

I have the Friheten. We use it for watching films and it’s fine that for that. I’ve slept on it with DH a couple of times and don’t like it.

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/02/2020 19:30

ShirleyPhallus do you remember which model you chose?

coles85 · 11/02/2020 19:39

We just had the same discussion! We ended up with the Coco from Sofology. It's not perfect, but was the best we found. However we've added a mattress topper from Ikea when people come to stay and they've said it was really comfy! So the coco + mattress topper has been a win for us

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2020 19:50

The Click Clacks is pretty heavy, my one had legs so while at first I thought I could use the storage space underneath, the way it folds out is that the middle dips down. So I had to pull boxes out, pull it away from the wall then fold it down.
IDK what the newer ones a like but mine was ancient and a bit...sproingy, the springs could be a bit noisy and I wouldn't have wanted to have sex on it Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 11/02/2020 20:06

Here you are @BoomBoomsCousin, we went to the showroom in London and tried it (and about a hundred others), it was the best one we found:

Agree about the Hemnes day bed. We have one in DD's room and I sleep on it often. We have proper mattresses on it and it's v comfy! Everyone else who has stayed on it has remarked about how comfy it is too. My dad even bought the same mattress for his bed at home!
