To be Depressed about my teeth do they look really bad?

My dentist told me today he’s referring me to see a specialist as my gums are so badly receded (i don’t smoke and have excellent dental hygiene- it’s hereditary), probably need gum surgery.

Anyone cheer me up?

Dentists see things we don’t. I just see great well shaped teeth.

All I see are lovely white, straight teeth. I can see that your gums have receded because you pointed it out but if I were to meet you in person then no I wouldn’t give them a second glance.

If its a dentist you've not had long term he may just be wanting a second opinion? They do look a little receeding (noticed only as you've specifically asked) but a colleague also has very similar gums, always has and apparently there's no issue. You're obviously really trying to show them and it clearly wouldn't be noticeable at all with smiling and talking ! Maybe best to be safe?

My old dentist used to scare me each time saying I had early gingivitis and periodontitis and send me to the hygienist. I switched dentists (within the practice) and have been told I have healthy gums and teeth and the hygienist is unnecessary. I’m now very cynical about it.

I’ve just googled receding gum images and in comparison yours look absolutely fantastic!

It’s a procedure where the gums can be pulled down slightly over the teeth and I think a treatment plan to hopefully reduce them receding more, I don’t know any details he just mentioned it and said he’d make the referral. I guess if it goes wrong there are always dentures! 🦷

You have lovely teeth. Gum health is a completely different thing, and like you said, is probably hereditary. Thankfully you have a good dentist who's picked up on it before it becomes painful or irreversible.

They look lovely to me - much whiter and straighter than mine.

Your teeth are lovely, and I'd never notice your gums. Don't forget that your dentist will see things that no ordinary person will ever notice. Do follow the advice your dentist gives you, but there's no reason for you to feel self-conscious.

Without looking at what was wrong I looked at the pic and instantly thought you had receding gums. I don’t think I would notice normally but probably picked it out as your teeth look great.

Just go with whatever your dentist recommends. Don’t be upset, be glad that it’s been picked up so it can be sorted
