To be Depressed about my teeth do they look really bad?

My dentist told me today he’s referring me to see a specialist as my gums are so badly receded (i don’t smoke and have excellent dental hygiene- it’s hereditary), probably need gum surgery.

Anyone cheer me up?

I’m so upset ☹️

Um, if it’s just cosmetic then why bother?

Charliecatpaws · 10/02/2020 21:50

You have lovely straight, white teeth, I’d be happy to have teeth like them

Rosebyanothername19 · 10/02/2020 21:54

I just see a lovely big white smile! You have no need to be self conscious (although I appreciate it's hard once someone has made a negative comment) Do you definitely need the procedure or is it a private dentist recommending it?

LocalHobo · 10/02/2020 21:54

Are you Olivia Colman?

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 10/02/2020 21:57

Have a look on Amazon and read the reviews about Gengigel mouthwash. My friend used this when she had receding gums and over time it really helped. It claims to restore gums and it was recommended to her by her own dentist.

zippyswife · 10/02/2020 22:01

@LocalHobo that’s what I thought too

Devonishome1 · 10/02/2020 22:05

You have nice teeth.

Fairylea · 10/02/2020 22:08

You have good teeth! I can’t even see any issues with your gums - but I’m no expert. But then neither are most people!

winnerwiner · 10/02/2020 22:12

Your teeth as others say, are lovely and I wouldn’t notice it until you said. My husband had a graft, again, really good hygiene it was just hereditary. In his case he saw a specialist dentist called a periodontist for the procedure and they grow artificial skin and graft it from gum to tooth. It wasn’t fun for sure, a lot of weird pulling and things and some odd noises. but you can’t feel Anything. About on par with having a crown or extraction. Tender the next few days but it healed nicely. Well worth it as you can lose teeth to receding gums.

I see lovely teeth!

acatcalledjohn · 10/02/2020 22:46

I'd murder for your teeth. Mine are straight, but really 'short' with a lot of gum visible. I had a dentist try to sell me treatment (private, of course), to cut away a millimeter or 2/3 of my gums. Purely cosmetic. Shortly after I had told him I was a nervous patient.

I never went back to him. Utter arsehole.

AmazingGreats · 10/02/2020 23:01

Much whiter and straighter than mine, and my gums are shit too. It's scary isn't it?

zurigirl · 11/02/2020 00:52

I'm wondering whether I might have to have something like this done too. But I'm also worried that the recession would just come back afterwards! (Mine is apparently due to the shape of my teeeth)

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/02/2020 01:29

In all honesty yes the gums are visibly receding at the gumline OP, I assume it is more visible when you can see the tops of the teeth without your lips there BUT from an aesthetic perspective just looking in normal levels of detail (rather than a close up pic zoomed in) as you would be in person, your teeth look more than fine - nicely straight, white, a nice smile.

It's not about the appearance of the teeth though is it it's about the health of the gums which needs to be up kept in order to support the teeth. Encouraging news that the dentist feels there is something that can be done before any huge problems arise- sympathies though, feeling worried about your teeth is bloody horrible, I recently had some dental work and it wasn't much fun but all will be worth it long term Flowers

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 11/02/2020 01:34

Your teeth look good but it does look like you do need treatment for the receding gums.

Stabbitha1 · 11/02/2020 01:36

Omg yesss olivia coleman! Op your teeth look fine. At least your issue is not your fault and fixable!

TooManyPups · 11/02/2020 07:46

Op you say there's always dentures like it's an easy option... I'd have killed for your teeth 4 lots of hg during pregnancy and some long term medication left me with major dental issues and like others here I'd have killed for teeth as "bad" as yours...
Please only go with dentures as an option as a last resort... I despise wearing mine (it's a temporary one and hopefully in a few months it will be refitted and I'll hate it less but I doubt it) ... But I can't stand people seeing me without it either

notsodimwit · 11/02/2020 08:08

Lovely teeth and a beautiful smile op..that's what I see Smile and a gorgeous top also!

chickpea1234 · 11/02/2020 08:20

I saw a gum specialist as was in the same situation and I was really upset beforehand but actually the specialist visit made me feel much better as she said despite appearances that my situation was not so bad. For me weirdly the suggested solution is to get them straightened in the first instance and then a graft.

Pinkginhelps · 11/02/2020 17:11

Please take your dentist's advice and see a periodontist. Receding gums will only ever get worse and look unsightly as you get bigger gaps at the top where your teeth disappear into your gums. This will make you look older. More importantly, gum recession can lead to your teeth becoming progressively unstable which can cause them to shift and in time to hurt and then fall out. It can also lead to pockets in your gums which trap gunge which you hen can't clean. This can cause abscesses, bleeding gums , bone recession (leading to loose teeth) and dental decay. Think of this as a wise investment to insure that your beautiful teeth remain intact. Much cheaper and infinitely less painful than implants.

Bettyspants · 12/02/2020 08:07

Lots of comments saying you have lovely straight teeth and a gorgeous smile- you certainly do! However , an initial specialist referral for receeding gums is rarely for aesthetic concerns (there seems to be several people thinking this is the case...).

Periodontal disease can lead to loss of teeth, it's also one of the main reasons for receeding gums (even if there is family disposition). You may need no treatment but not going based on assurances your smile is great really isn't a great idea. I'd be devastated to lose teeth when early referral could have prevented that stage from happening.

Please take your dentist's advice, he or she is the expert! Can't see all of your gums but what is visible is receeding. This does not mean that you do not have beautiful teeth and a stunning smile! Good luck fingers crossed you won't need anything doing
