To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

Mashbocking1 · 08/02/2020 15:03

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

MissDollyMix · 08/02/2020 16:19

I came for the responses...they haven’t let me down Grin

RedRec · 08/02/2020 16:20

I have heard it all now.

Littlemeadow123 · 08/02/2020 16:23

I went to pirate parties when I was little. So far neither me or my friends have forged a career out of raping and pillaging.

JellyfishandShells · 08/02/2020 16:23

🎶I am a a Pirate King ! 🎶

Better demonstrate outside all those amateur operetta productIons of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, then. Though come to think of it , there’s a highly questionable relationship between Frederic, the young lead and his former , much older nursemaid so eek, safeguarding , nothing is beyond revisionist analysis.....

Roselilly36 · 08/02/2020 16:25

My DS’s have been to pirate parties and I have hosted one for DS1, says a lot about me as a mother, no doubt! They are 18 & 16 now, and seem to be unscathed 🤣 no robbing and decent people, let kids be kids I say.

LlamaPjama · 08/02/2020 16:26

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted - properly laughing at your post. Storm troopers!!! Grin

TheMemoryLingers · 08/02/2020 16:26

squeekums You're rrright, arrrr. We need a pirate smiley! MNHQ - parlay with us for a pirate smiley or we'll make you walk the plank.

JacquesHammer · 08/02/2020 16:26

Let’s face it, G&S has several relationships where you look at it and think “how on, how do the ages work here”. Fred is pretty much the only one you know how old he is! 😁

WeeBitSleepy · 08/02/2020 16:27

Sure, best keep your TV pin locked too, just in case DC want to watch Swashbuckle on CBeebies...

Babybel90 · 08/02/2020 16:28

I’m sensing the OP has had an unpleasant experience involving pirates Hmm

FriedasCarLoad · 08/02/2020 16:28

I sympathise, OP. I hate pirate themes.

I may well end up letting my children go anyway - maybe dressed as a parrot?! - but I have a while to ponder this, since DD is only one Grin

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 08/02/2020 16:30

What a fantastic classic HQ response!

squeekums · 08/02/2020 16:31

That would be in spite of, not because of, your actions. Who knows what kids are picking up by having a laugh and joke with a fake plastic cutlasses, pretending to kill each other!
Personally I don’t find killing people a very funny or light-hearted matter, especially for pre-school kids! Future generations will judge us

ok, WHERE do you get your LSD from
Your getting some high grade stuff!

JKScot4 · 08/02/2020 16:32

Somebody’s wide aWOKE 🤣

SirChing · 08/02/2020 16:34

Did the OP watch the piracy bit before a DVD and get confused.

OP, this party really ISN'T like stealing a handbag!

Shinysun · 08/02/2020 16:34

You arrrrrrrrrgh being unreasonable.

Not read many other comments so I apologise if this has been done.

Serin · 08/02/2020 16:34

Seasonalanxiety
I'm crying laughing at your link. Blush

Squaffle · 08/02/2020 16:35

I mean... you definitely shouldn’t go... but not for any of the reasons you’ve stated!

squeekums · 08/02/2020 16:35

parlay with us for a pirate smiley or we'll make you walk the plank

cutlass drawn and ready.......

TroysMammy · 08/02/2020 16:36

Don't you have anyone in real life who would say to you "don't be a twat" ?

Stifledlife · 08/02/2020 16:36

God love your poor innocent first born heart.

In 3 years i went from "I will not glorify murder by giving my son a gun to play with" to a toy box marked "weapons".

Pirates have had the disney magic bestowed upon them, and if they were once dastardly, they aren't now.
Do you feel the same about knights, or soldiers or any other characters from historical conflict? Is Peter Pan a kidnapper and paedophile?

Get a grip..

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 08/02/2020 16:38

Is Peter Pan a kidnapper and paedophile?

Captain Hook is dodgy as fuck though, with the whole wanting Wendy as his bride thing.

TroysMammy · 08/02/2020 16:39

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum Gin

Thefaceofboe · 08/02/2020 16:39
