To wish people would proof-read their posts to pick up auto-correct fails.

I'm not talking about SPAG errors, but the seemingly endless posts these days which are either full of incomprehensible gobbledygook or are immediately followed by a subsequent post reading "DD, not Dad" or "precious, nor precise" or "car, not cat", "carton, not cartoon", "lounging, not longing", "prorogues, not Portuguese", etc., etc., etc.

Is it asking too much to expect people to quickly scan what they've typed before pressing "post" so that threads don't become annoyingly cluttered with people's auto-correct corrections?

Sorry, will try to be more precious

Oysterbabe · 02/02/2020 14:52

You are being unseasonably.

Maddiemademe · 02/02/2020 14:52

I mean precise not precious

Oysterbabe · 02/02/2020 14:53

*unreasonable

Cheguevarahamster · 02/02/2020 14:53

Oh for ducks sake.

MT2017 · 02/02/2020 14:53

There needs to be an edit button for exactly this reason.

jaffaeclipse · 02/02/2020 14:55

You are being to preshus.

UnaCorda · 02/02/2020 14:55

I suspect I asked for that...

Damn autocorrect. I meant two.

UnaCorda · 02/02/2020 14:57

You are being to preshus.

You wouldn't get "preshus" from auto-correct, and "to" instead of "too" is SPAG.

Get a life. And this is Mumsnet you know. Most posters have babies or very small children. I, for one, don't put much importance on proof reading when I have a million other things to do but want some quick advice or downtime.

saraclara · 02/02/2020 14:58

I'm one of those who does that oops thing. Even when I've read things through, I find I've missed something that I have to correct. I use Swype on my phone and sometimes I get a bit casual. I'd love a very short editing window. Even 30 seconds would help. Weirdly my mistakes are evident to me the moment my post appears, while not being when I skim check beforehand.

Oblomov20 · 02/02/2020 14:59

Mine are awful. Even when I've proof read, I post, re-read and then realise all my mistakes.

PreseaCombatir · 02/02/2020 15:00

Posts are not being graded, so Yabu
You can have 1000 posts in a thread, can’t see how reducing to 999 to correct something could be classed as cluttering it

StCharlotte · 02/02/2020 15:02

The brain plays tricks so it's hard to proofread your own "work". Because you see what you're expecting to see.

I say that as a secretary for decades and I will almost certainly have left out a word Grin

Do you know, I thought for a minute you had a sense of humour there OP. Mea culpa.

FuzzyAtmosphere · 02/02/2020 15:04

Usually I only see my mistakes after I’ve posted, even if I did read through! 😳 My autocorrect also has the annoying habit of changing things part way through a sentence so I check as I go along and then at the end, it’s all wrong and not my fault - then there are the times I get it wrong and it doesn’t even bother to pick it up for me! 🤷🏻‍♀️

UnaCorda · 02/02/2020 15:04

I've just read a thread in which the first ten posts contained two that were auto-correct corrections.

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 02/02/2020 15:05

Was it this thread?

Sparklesocks · 02/02/2020 15:06

I don’t mind tbh, as long as I get the gist of what they mean from the post. I know sometimes posters are typing one handed while they are holding a little one, or are hurriedly trying to get something out while they’re between work tasks.

Whynosnowyet · 02/02/2020 15:07

My nonce pie cheered up many a poster!!

Angharad07 · 02/02/2020 15:09

As someone with dyslexia, I can’t always see the autocorrected words even when I proof read. Sometimes they just ‘pop’ out while I’m reading my post again, sometimes they don’t.

YANBU though. It annoys me too.

UnaCorda · 02/02/2020 15:10

Oh I do, when something's funny. But to make it a joke it would have to be something like @Oysterbabe posted, writing "unseasonably" instead of "unreasonable". "Preshus" is just a phonetic spelling, which you would never get from auto-correct, so rather misses the point.

Why doesn't MN just implement an edit function like every other forum on the internet?
