Wwyd - stbxh having key cut

clpsmum · 12/01/2020 20:14

Been separated from stbxh for over two years. None of it has been amicable. Last summer police were involved. They told me to take keys off him and for him to stay away from the house.

Today he told me via text message that he had a key to the house. I asked him if he had had one cut as I'd take it off him and he said yes. So he has either a) has a key cut behind my back without my knowledge or consent and against the advice or the police or b) lied about having a key cut to scare me and make me anxious. Not sure which is worse tbh.

Not sure what, if any, action to take and was hoping you'd give me some advice and tell me what you think I should do.

First things first, change the locks

Barmaid101 · 12/01/2020 20:15

Change your locks

Lucky44 · 12/01/2020 20:16

Change the locks

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 12/01/2020 20:16

Seems obvious what to do....

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/01/2020 20:16

Inform the police and change the lock.

bridgetreilly · 12/01/2020 20:17

Find a locksmith. Install deadbolts and use them.

2020BetterBeBetter · 12/01/2020 20:17

Another vote for changing the locks.

Jupiters · 12/01/2020 20:21

Change the locks.

GruciusMalfoy · 12/01/2020 20:21

Dont engage with him anymore. Change the locks. Depending on his reaction from here, possibly contact police if you're concerned.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/01/2020 20:23

You can also get fairly cheap alarms that go on the door. Amazon?

ConfidingFish · 12/01/2020 20:24

If you can afford it get an ABS lock, they cannot be cut without the accompanying card so if you gave someone a key for whatever reason they cannot have it cut without your knowledge.

But definitely get the barrel changed no matter what.

Do you have children together?

DeathStare · 12/01/2020 20:25

Get the locks changed. And if you can't do that today either stay somewhere else tonight or ask a friend to stay over. Don't stay there tonight.

clpsmum · 12/01/2020 20:33

@ConfidingFish yes we do have children together.

I don't actually think he does have a key I think he was saying it to intimidate me which is just as worrying tbh. I will be getting the locks changed

Sindragosan · 12/01/2020 20:41

Reply saying you'd changed the locks ages ago so it doesn't matter if he has a key or not, and then get the locks changed to the abs type as suggested above, just for your own peace of mind.

andyjusthangingaround · 12/01/2020 20:50

One more vote for Change the locks (why isn’t it obvious? Hmm )

ChopOrNot · 12/01/2020 20:51

I think it is fairly straightforward to change the barrel without needing a locksmith - YouTube and/or @PigletJohn should sort you out.

Weffiepops · 12/01/2020 20:51

Change the locks

Somemore · 12/01/2020 20:52

Change the lock, you can do it yourself easily with a bit of help from you tube. Then just ignore him, he's trying to upset you. If you put the lock in yourself you know no one has a spare key... Oh and you could get indoor security cameras and let him know.

clpsmum · 12/01/2020 21:26

Will definitely get the locks changed just didn't know whether or not to log with anyone, police etc. Think I'm going to get one of the video doorbells to so I can see if he has been at the door.

Make sure you screen shot the message so you can keep a record just in case things escalate. Definitely tell the police.

Drum2018 · 12/01/2020 21:31

Change the locks and don't tell him.

Hahaha88 · 12/01/2020 21:33

Stupid question. Change the bloody locks

clpsmum · 12/01/2020 21:33

Yes unfortunately all messages have been screenshot for a while now. Sad it's come to this but needs must

OP posts:
clpsmum · 12/01/2020 21:35

@Hahaha88 yes as I've said I am going to get the locks changed tomorrow I was meaning more should I log this with police or any other agency or just keep the text messages as proof?
