To allow my DD13 watch Love Island?

ChoccieEClaire · 05/01/2020 20:24

My DD is 13 and in year 8.
She has asked me for the last few years if she can watch Love Island.
I've always said no but now I'm wondering if she's old enough.
I've not really watched it and think it's all rubbish but I'm wondering if that's clouding my judgement of if it's suitable for her to watch.
We have had discussions about the type of people that are on it, how it's not a representation of true life and relationships and how everyone is just fame hungry. She seems to get it.
Can anyone advise me on what they think based on if they watch it or if they allow their teens to watch it?

I haven't actually seen more than about 1 episode as I remember it will involve people who are either fairly stupid or pretending to be fairly stupid dating/sleeping with each other and falling out. I would probably watch it together with DD. At 13 it won't involve anything she hasn't heard about anyway and fairly soon if she wants to see it she'll just watch it without your knowledge. Better that she sees it with you and you can chat to her and put it all in a bit of context.

There have been some years where the contestants quite obviously shag in the bedroom (albeit under the covers) I personally wouldn’t want to sit and watch that with a 13 year old myself.

Apextubing1 · 05/01/2020 20:30

Sorry what type of people are on there???

JupiterBelle · 05/01/2020 20:31

That depends on whether you’re comfortable with her hearing repeated bad language and seeing very sexualised behaviour.

Apextubing1 · 05/01/2020 20:31

Ah it’s ok, @NoooorthonerMum has answered for you

Teenagemaw · 05/01/2020 20:31

My teen watches it,tbh they hear worse in school.

puds11 · 05/01/2020 20:33

YABU as it looks like utter drivel.

My son watched bits of it when he was in his year 6 residential trip. They stayed at a B&B & all had TV's in their room. Can't say I was too impressed at the time!

mizu · 05/01/2020 20:43

I've got 2 DDs 15 and 13.5 and don't want them to watch it as its shite TV and I don't get the value of it at all.

ErickBroch · 05/01/2020 20:45

The new season is very different to how it used to be. No drinking, smoking, sex, hanky panky etc. Kissing is as much as you see now as they saw the success and want it to be viewed by a wider audience/younger people.

Classof66 · 05/01/2020 20:47

NO

Glitterfisher · 05/01/2020 20:48

Any senior school age child is fine to watch it IMO. The early series have a lot of sex but not so much now, not really any drinking or smoking any more either.

I can't imagine what anyone would think is unsuitable for a 13 yo. There is definitely a lot worse on TV and the internet, also what they hear from people at school.

It is trash though, but strangely addictive.

missmouse101 · 05/01/2020 20:50

I really wouldn't if she were mine.

FanSpamTastic · 05/01/2020 20:58

I think it's interesting to watch together and to discuss some of the issues arising,

To be blunt - if she wants to watch it she will probably find it somewhere on the internet. Better she watches it with you and you have the opportunity to discuss.

whyismysoullost · 05/01/2020 20:59

I wouldn't to be honest. But your child ain't mine child so what you do with your child does not effect me.

Patroclus · 05/01/2020 21:03

Can you record a few episodes of Songs of Praise and try convince her its that?

Starryskiesinthesky · 05/01/2020 21:07

I think it’s fine - better to watch with her and then can chat about the issues. My son watched it at 13. It is fairly trashy tho!

FizzyIce · 05/01/2020 21:07

I don’t think anyone should watch it ,no matter the age .
It’s absolute toilet tv

Palavah · 05/01/2020 21:11

It's 6-7 hours a week for several weeks.

Think of all the more productive or constructive stuff she could be doing in that time. Also, it's on that late for a reason.

Watch some clips of last year's series and see what you think

PositiveVibez · 05/01/2020 21:17

I watch it and it has become far tamer than the earlier days regarding shagging. They don't show that and also don't show people smoking.

It's a daft programme and my husband can't believe I watch it, but I love it.

I do have. Problem with the body images portrayed though. All pretty damn perfect, with sparkling white teeth and thong bikinis and more 6 packs than the off licence and also a couple of the girls have come out saying they basically starved themselves to try and look perfect, so as long and you discuss body image and relationships etc., I would watch it with a 13yo.

Glitterfisher · 05/01/2020 21:20

Its not really on late, usually 9-10 I think.

WeWantSweet · 05/01/2020 21:21

Someone above said what you did with your child didn't affect them, but I would disagree in that what society as a whole deems acceptable boils down to individual choices and is therefore important.

misspiggy19 · 05/01/2020 21:23

It is trash. I wouldn’t subject a 13 year old to it.

RozHuntleysStump · 05/01/2020 21:24

They don’t show the shagging anymore.
