To consider buying a Himilayan Salt Lamp?

I hear they're good for anxiety and calming etc but also I'm a big fan of cozy lighting and autumnal colours. I'm a big reader though... if I bought one for my bedside table would it light up the room enough to see?

I think they look cool and have been toying with getting one, too

Helini · 01/01/2020 23:04

My friend swears by them

Candlecandle · 01/01/2020 23:05

I love them. We have 2.

Lockheart · 01/01/2020 23:06

Buy whatever you want, why would you be unreasonable?

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2020 23:06

I have several throughout my home. They give off a gorgeous soft warm light, and I like the fact that the house isn't pitch black at night.

MindYours · 01/01/2020 23:07

@lockheart - couldn't change it on my phone

I love ours.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2020 23:08

Buy one if you like the look of them, don't buy one for any supposed health benefits - it's fake science.

BeUpStanding · 01/01/2020 23:08

Don't get one if you have a cat. Apparently cats may be tempted to lick the salt which could harm or even possibly kill them.

Glittercandle · 01/01/2020 23:08

We have one but I wouldn't say it has calming effects it’s just nice to look at when lit.

ArthurShelbysTash · 01/01/2020 23:08

I have 2 and they have dimmer switches. They are bright enough to read by. I'm not sure about the supposed health benefits, some people swear by them, but they do give a lovely light.

Please make sure you get a hand mined one. They're not the most ethical - Himalayan Salt isn't renewable, obviously. I've had mine for years and I'm not sure I'd buy one now had I researched.

Cherrysoup · 01/01/2020 23:09

Just if you haven’t cats, saw a scary post on social media about it making them very sick. It’s odd, we get these as salt licks for the horses!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 01/01/2020 23:10

You've just been reading the same thread as me .. I've got one in my internet shopping basket too Smile

MotherHeggy · 01/01/2020 23:12

I have three - 2 in the lounge and one in the bedroom. I only have the ones in the lounge on,no other lights. I can see clearly, but it's cosy.

The one in the bedroom means I can see,but not bright enough to read a ''real'' book, but I have a kindle paperwhite I use if I don't want a lamp on.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2020 23:13

I have 5 cats and have had salt lamps for over 10 years. My cats don't bother with them at all. This is one of my lamps in a downstairs hallway.

I have two cats, neither have gone near enough to my salt lamps to lick them

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/01/2020 23:15

I have one because I like them no other reason. I have cats and hadnt read about them licking them,, but mine havent been near it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/01/2020 23:17

Genuine ones cost a lot. So be wary of the origins of anything under £200. You might find it cheaper and healthier to go to your local Indian cash and carry, buy a whole bag of it and use it in your food - it’s meant to be healthier as its lower in sodium. Not sure how true that is but Hindus consider it vegan whereas proper rock salt (that comes from the ocean /rivers isn’t

ssd · 01/01/2020 23:18

Where are you all buying these, I'm wanting one now.

milliefiori · 01/01/2020 23:19

Get one. They are so cosy. I used to have one in DC's room when they were babies as the low light was warm and soft.

Russellbrandshair · 01/01/2020 23:19

I love mine! Beautiful glow and very soothing

MotherHeggy · 01/01/2020 23:20

The ex husband bought me my first one from Amazon,my other two I bought from a ''hippy shop'' in town

Sallyjo27 · 01/01/2020 23:23

I have a cat and she never goes near my salt lamp. Not sure about the health benefits of the lamp, I just think they look lovely.

vilamoura2003 · 01/01/2020 23:31

I love mine - not sure it would be bright enough to read by (unless you have a kindle paper white or similar), and I'm not sure it has helped with anxiety really, but I love it 💕

Emmelina · 01/01/2020 23:36

It’s a calming light. Dangerous for cats if they happen to be licky/nibbly cats though. One of ours is fine but the other has to sample everything that comes in (we have some interestingly altered succulents now!)
