What has happened to Quality Street??

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 31/12/2019 20:26

I bought a small carton of Quality Street today, more for nostalgia than anything. I used to love Quality Street many years ago when I was a teen. I hadn’t had them in years.
I now only like the 2 toffee sweets!!
Have they changed? Or is it my taste buds that have changed?

Most of the Lindt Excellence bars are fine, but the Lindor truffles, the Master Chocolatier boxes and the milk chocolate and wafer bars all contain palm oil and/or palm kernal oil

Delatron · 01/01/2020 19:34

They’re inedible. Everyone should stop buying in protest!

M&S ones were lovely. I don’t think they use plan oil?

HeIenaDove · 01/01/2020 19:54

Montelimar, Almond Charm, Noisette, Brazilian Darkness, mini Dairy Milk and mini Bournville are the ones gone from Roses and the original coffee cream which was dark

Christmasquestion · 01/01/2020 20:28

Mmmmmm, Brazilian Darkness and Noisette Whirl - would love either of those right now. We’re the orange creams in Roses dark chocolate too? I seem to remember that they were.

HeIenaDove · 01/01/2020 20:30

yes they were.

HeIenaDove · 01/01/2020 20:33

DB and i hated the orange creams when we were kids. Parents didnt love them either. Which is why they used to be left at the bottom of the glass jar. DM still has a couple of the 1980s Roses jars.

wigglycactus · 01/01/2020 20:40

Tony's Chocolonely is absolutely amazing, especially the one in the orange wrapper. They are also committed to making sure that their chocolate is slave free, unlike other awful companies already mentioned on this thread.

Gingernaut · 01/01/2020 23:05

I've come across Tony's Chocoloney a couple of times.

Lovely chocolate, like a Yorkie bar in size.

M&S do use palm oil. You have to check each type individually.

HeIenaDove · 01/01/2020 23:25

DH is currently eating mint Matchmakers (cant stand the things myself) which are made by Quality Street He says they are still nice but not as strong.

Delatron · 02/01/2020 10:13

Ah that’s a shame about M&S. They were the only ones I had that tasted nice anyway so maybe less other crap in there.

AuntieMarys · 02/01/2020 10:15

We have 2 unopened tins in the cupboard, bought by someone who clearly doesnt like us 😀
They are going to a local charity

SerendipityJane · 02/01/2020 11:13

Whether we like it or not, we, the consumers, have voted with our feet. If Cadbury’s reverted to the old Roses recipe, and dispensed with the cheap fats, I bet their sales would fall off a cliff because the sweets would be more expensive. We have encouraged the manufacturers to commoditise (is that a word?) QS, Roses etc by being price driven.

Anything which can be sold by weight, basically. In a wider world, a lot of veg and meat is flavourless (but cheap !) for the same reason. Water is heavy.

You want nice tomatoes ? Grow them yourself.
You want nice chocolate ? Make it yourself.

JustMyName · 02/01/2020 15:50

Serendipity how do you make chocolate yourself?!

nowaypose · 02/01/2020 15:52

We got bought a couple of tubs of Roses for Christmas, I’d never buy them in a million years. The chocolate is awful and the plastic waste is hideous. I swear they used to be wrapped in foil and the tins were definitely always metal. It’s such a shame.

BigFatMamaJam · 02/01/2020 16:08

I thought it was just me. I used to love quality street but this year I bought a tub for Christmas, are a few of the soft ones and was very “meh” about them. I left the tub open on the coffee table in the end and told all visitors to help themselves. Probably won’t buy any next year.

SerendipityJane · 02/01/2020 16:08

I dunno, we've given up. But my point stands. In a consumer world driven by price over quality, if you want the good stuff, you ain't gonna find it in the shops. By the time we're all dust, our kids and grandkids will have grown up with shit chocolate (much as Americans had to Grin) and just accept that's the way it is.

If you can grow your own veg, raise your own meat, and make your own beer/wine, you will be amazed at how bland everything has become.

doritosdip · 02/01/2020 16:09

Totally changed. My kids won't even eat them anymore and they are chocoholics

BrigitsBigKnickers · 02/01/2020 16:11

I agree and the new salted caramel flavour is revolting.

wonkylegs · 02/01/2020 16:23

I bought Morrison's Irish cream instead of Baileys this year and it's much nicer than the real baileys
Thankful we didn't get any big boxes of cheap chocs this year - next door bought the kids sweets instead this year, admittedly enough to last them to next Christmas but all very nice.

1Morewineplease · 02/01/2020 16:26

I noticed that my local supermarkets were struggling to shift Roses, QS etc...
For the first time ever, my family has failed to finish a tub of chocolates.

GladAllOver · 02/01/2020 16:40

"Totally changed. My kids won't even eat them anymore and they are chocoholics"
Let them try Moser Roth chocolate from Aldi. No palm oil, and a choice of cocoa ingredient up to 85%.
It's the only chocolate we buy now.

Xmaspost · 29/02/2020 17:54

Local supermarket had some QS on sale a few weeks back, and just tried some this afternoon. Awful :( Not as I remember them (but it's been 20+ years). Maybe as other posters say, is it due to palm oil? I won't be trying them again.

Side note, I do have a fond memory of QS, first bf I gave a bj to finished unexpectedly and bought me QS next day to apologize Blush

Xmaspost · 29/02/2020 17:59

Even though I didn't really like the QS I just tried (Milk Choc Block, Purple one), I did swallow, rather than spit, it would have been too messy otherwise Smile

TheRiverKnows · 15/05/2021 16:25

I did a search on Quality Street and found this old thread. I got a box as a thank you, really not nice :(

TheRiverKnows · 15/05/2021 16:26

But I guess I should try a few different ones before final decision.
