What has happened to Quality Street??

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 31/12/2019 20:26

I bought a small carton of Quality Street today, more for nostalgia than anything. I used to love Quality Street many years ago when I was a teen. I hadn’t had them in years.
I now only like the 2 toffee sweets!!
Have they changed? Or is it my taste buds that have changed?

We've had an open box in my house for the past 2 weeks and it's still half full.

We have 3 children who will eat anything.

Definitely not what it used to be.

Nestle. Just sayin'

It seems to me the manufacturers are trying to make all our chocolate collections like Continental chocolates - truffles, and soft gunge instead of all the hard ones, we like?

LakieLady · 31/12/2019 21:53

Also Baileys has been given the cheaper treatment I think, unbearably sweet now and much thinner

I'm so glad you said that - I thought it was my sense of taste that had gone weird.

I think loads of things have been cheapened. We used to like Tesco Finest lasagne, but they stopped selling it at our local store. I got one from somewhere else a while ago and it was so runny it was like lasagne soup. I reckon they've saved money by adding more water.

LakieLady · 31/12/2019 21:59

@MontStMichel, there used to be a brand of chocolates marketed as Terrys, called Spartan. They were fab - dark chocolate and all hard centres, like butterscotch, nougat, chewy caramel etc.

I'd kill for a box of those right now. All Gold has gone to shite, too: inferior chocolate and crappy centres.

Given the success of CAMRA and their campaign for proper beer, maybe it's time to start the campaign for real chocolate.

PhilSwagielka · 31/12/2019 21:59

Is there any chocolate that DOESN'T use palm oil?

bluerad · 31/12/2019 22:01

@LakieLady I remember Spartan too. Best box of chocolates ever!

fantasmasgoria1 · 31/12/2019 22:05

Tbh the best chocolate for me these days is lindt!

DarkDarkNight · 31/12/2019 22:10

I love the fruit creams, they’re my favourites of all the traditional Christmas chocolates.

The new brownie caramel one is disgusting, completely inedible and the toffee deluxe was pointless. Have they dropped that one?

HearMeSnore · 31/12/2019 22:11

Those new blue ones taste like Play-doh.

And Roses are more wrapper than chocolate now, and anyway I can't forgive Cadbury's for withdrawing their chocolate coated nut assortment.

Dubya · 31/12/2019 22:13

Most chocolate is gross now, aside from some of the very dark chocolates which haven't been made to be oily and tasteless. It's good for my health as I have a serious sweet tooth but I'm not arsed, but such a shame. I have also found celebrations haven't tasted of much this year, even though galaxy is one of the nicer ones still available in the bigger bars. I wonder if they do make them super cheap as they know supermarkets are going to want to sell them cheaply and they still need the mark up.

stripeypillowcase · 31/12/2019 22:14

they were bad (compared to continental christmas chocolates 20 years ago...

WhatshouldIdo123 · 31/12/2019 22:15

@salty78 Me to.... bloody bastards.

sandybanana · 31/12/2019 22:15

I was just thinking the same- have literally just eaten some revolting one with a green wrapper. Yuk filling- absolutely hideous.

Bleeuuuuurggh

🤢

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 31/12/2019 22:18

Oh l forgot about peanut cracknell!

I'm not buying them next year.

Spitsandspots · 31/12/2019 22:21

You know if you type this in google they could give you a list

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 31/12/2019 22:23

They are utterly rank now, told DH we are never buying them again, he completely agreed.

Bunnylady54 · 31/12/2019 22:26

Used to love Quality Street but not anymore 😥. Just tastes cheap & nasty. I don’t remember a peanut cracknell.

GingerbreadTeen · 31/12/2019 22:30

If there are particular QS you like, such as green triangles, and you are willing to pay a bit more you can go to John Lewis and buy a tin with your favourites only. Last year DH gifted me a whole tin of green triangles and this year I got green triangles, strawberry creams and orange creams.

This year I bought the family a tin of normal QS and there were only four green triangles. Pretty certain this is deliberate. Angry

Toblerone

JustMyName · 31/12/2019 22:36

Agree about Spartan. My grandma used to have a box every Christmas, they were lovely. Why did they get rid of them?

Most chocolate is awful now. I don't mind paying a bit more for better chocolate, but I'd like a good assortment.. not a block, but individual chocs with various centres.

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 31/12/2019 22:40

I bought my QS tin in the sakes last January so it has the toffee deluxe but not the brownie one. I'm glad as it sounds rank. I've not enjoyed the Christmas chocolates this year much at all. Heroes are pretty foul and the wrappers ridiculous. The M&S big selection are ok but nothing special and too sweet. After 8s, yuck. M&S peppermint creams too strong and too big. M&S cherry liqueurs were icky too. The kids have barely touched any of the things I've put out. Next year I'm not bothering. Montezumas buttons and toblerone will be the ones we get.

LakieLady · 31/12/2019 22:42

I bought a box of Waitrose own brand chocolates this Christmas, and even they were pretty shite.

GladAllOver · 31/12/2019 22:43

Aldi have a range of chocolate bars that don't use palm oil. It tastes of real chocolate!

SquareAsABlock · 31/12/2019 22:47

I nicked a bit of my kids' chocolate over Christmas, it was like eating a sugary crayon. I swear it was what Monica was talking about when using Mocklet in Friends. It's so disappointing, the selection boxes were one of the best parts of Christmas for me.
