To ask you to pray for the thousands of people trapped on a beach by fires in Victoria?

There are 4000 people from the town of Mallacoota, Victoria, Australia, that is currently being destroyed by fire. They most likely won’t have homes to return to. They all have life jackets on ready to take shelter in the water as embers rain down upon them. Fire personnel have just - as I post - told them to get in the water. Can you imagine how they must feel?

Australia at the moment is burning across 4 states. Where I am it is 45c and the smell of smoke is heavy. It is a terrible summer for us.

Has anyone heard anything from Francesca Winterson yet?

gluteustothemaximus · 01/01/2020 01:24

I'm not religious OP but I'll gladly say a prayer Flowers

Here’s an idea - start your own thread. Go rant else where. Set up your soap box on a thread that’s about how shit and corrupt our PM is. Many would agree with you.

This thread is not about politics or religion or who paid what where or or or

It’s a thread for people who want to talk and grieve and look for some comfort.

If that’s ok with you of course Hmm

bettybattenburg · 01/01/2020 01:26

I don't think so but given that she was saying she was expecting to have lost her house - she said goodbye to it before going to the studio - she's probably got way too much on her plate for anything else. I hope that's the case anyway, too many people have died or been injured in this disaster.

As for prayers, I'm a lifelong atheist as well but if other people want to pray then that is their prerogative. I have no idea if their ideas about religion are right or if mine are so who am I to criticise what others might find helpful? None of us know if we are right about God or not, we just believe we are. If my family in Oz want to pray, if others on this thread want to pray and it helps them then they can pray and it's none of my business.

GirlDownUnder · 01/01/2020 01:28

NotYourTypicalNerd I haven’t, and I’ve been looking for updates. I think comms and power are still down.

bettybattenburg · 01/01/2020 01:29

OP, maybe ask for this thread to be moved out of AIBU and into 'In the News' or 'Chat' so it's more obvious it's not a place for argument or discussion?

Lowbrow · 01/01/2020 01:30

Australians want pressure from other governments to force them to take climate change seriously. Australians are now talking about wanting other countries to put on sanctions against Australia. Apparently we have TWO years to get moving. Australia still has two years of this climate denying, fossil fuel loving government. They are now talking about making protesting against the law.

Professor Will Steffensen. - Climate Change expert and researcher Please don’t sit back and think we have until 2030 to get emissions down.

Cross posted with bettybattenburg - her staying on air as long as she did was amazing, and brave considering she was reporting about fires starting as she was logging off. I hope she was right about how safe the studio was.

managedmis · 01/01/2020 01:33

Does anyone have a recent update? Just looked online but nothing

Thanks..yes, she has definitely got more important things to be doing for sure. Amazing she stayed on air so long. She has just stuck in my mind as an incredibly brave woman and I hope she is ok.
Seeing pictures of the truck go through that firestorm..my heartfelt thanks go out to the incredible fire services and volunteers. Your bravery and dedication humbles us all.

JanesKettle · 01/01/2020 01:37

Gosh this thread got ugly. How sad.

I'm an atheist, and my friend in East Gippsland, who was in an evacuation centre, asked for prayers. And I gave them, because it comforted her as her sons were out fighting fires.

bettybattenburg thanks for your patience. I think if I said what I wanted I’d be banned Flowers

Horehound · 01/01/2020 01:53

Apparently the woman is exhausted but survived. It is on twitter somewhere

ClappyCheeks · 01/01/2020 01:56

It’s just awful. I really hope everyone is OK.

bettybattenburg · 01/01/2020 01:57

@girldownunder thanks for your patience. I think if I said what I wanted I’d be banned

That's got to be a first, I'm not known for my patience! Flowers right back to you.

@horsehound Apparently the woman is exhausted but survived. It is on twitter somewhere

Thank goodness for that,

GirlDownUnder · 01/01/2020 01:57

Thanks Horehound

I found this - good news...

I'm pleased to say Francesca survived. She is fatigued and exhausted. Thanks to everyone for asking. She was magnificent under pressure. #MallacootaFires

Didkdt · 01/01/2020 02:33

It's good to hear to hear Francessca is safe.

@Swisskit I'm amazed you've got the space in your life that your biggest annoyance is something others do that has no impact on you

In other news keep up the hopes, wishes, a prayers and whatever else you have to offer in support, the front of the fire may have moved on from Mallacoota but these fires aren't slowing down or going down and reports show the situation by Saturday could be even more horrific
I'm sure swiskit et al will continue to show their support by bashing down others.

theflushedzebra · 01/01/2020 02:45

Great news about Francesca - I was in awe of her broadcast last night. Brave woman Thanks

mathanxiety · 01/01/2020 02:46

There is a news report that a sudden change of wind has kept the fire back from the shore at Mallacoota where firefighters had been preparing a last stand. Of course the wind can turn around again. The danger remains.

What a relief. I hope that it stays that way whilst those people are rescued.

It's the weather that changes every day, 'mate'.

The term 'climate' refers to long term patterns of temperature, wind direction, seasonal highs and lows, precipitation totals.
