I'm not going to have a heart attack or anything with all the saturated fat right..?

I'm not 'huge' but I'm not small either and pretty much all the excess weight is on my belly which I'm told is particularly bad for you as it indicates fat in your organs or something.

DO IT!! I started in Aug and have lost 22kg. Have genuinely never felt better. Good luck!

ihateryansworld · 23/12/2019 16:25

I have seen lots of buddies on Facebook threatening Keto. What exactly is it. I assume it works?

DrierThanANunsNasty · 23/12/2019 16:29

If you want to feel like shit and have keto breath then go ahead! At the end of the day, these diets aren’t sustainable forever and there’s a reason it makes your body feel rundown and gives you stinky breather (spoiler alert: it’s not healthy). I’d recommend the good old fashioned eating less calories than you burn and ensuring it’s a wide range of food groups... or the cabbage diet, heard that’s great too Hmm

Ponoka7 · 23/12/2019 16:30

I'm not on a keto diet, but I restrict carbs to 70g a day and none processed.

I also calorie restrict.

I'm losing weight (I'm post menopausal) and I've never looked or felt better.

Long term proper keto isn't good for us, but you can go from Keto to low carb, once you have got to were you want to.

Thestrangestthing · 23/12/2019 16:34

I don't thi k it's a healthy way to lose weight. . DP did it and he had some shitty side effects. He has now gone veggie and lost as much weight as he did on keto, feels better, looks better and doesn't smell.

Ponoka7 · 23/12/2019 16:35

"there’s a reason it makes your body feel rundown and gives you stinky breather (spoiler alert: it’s not healthy)."

It's the body adjusting to coming off carbs and the body more efficiently burning fat for energy.

Carbs are killing us and we don't need processed carbs at all. They were a cheap form of calories to keep the working classes going, while they kill themselves through work.

LaLaLanded · 23/12/2019 16:45

Do it!!

I’ve been keto for 3 years (and perfectly healthy - recently had my bloods done and I’m top notch) and don’t smell! Dietdoctor is a good starter website.

Some people end up doing high protein when they intend to do keto and generally feel worse for it - the key to keto is getting your fats high enough. I eat an avocado a day.

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 23/12/2019 16:50

I’m debating Keto mainly as a quick way of losing some weight and seeing results (more for motivation than anything) then I was thinking of doing it for 8 weeks then going onto low carb.

I have a lot of weight to shift at least 22kg!

Jammysod · 23/12/2019 17:15

Woman at work has been on it for months. It's worked a treat & she looks amazing. Bored everybody to death talking about it though.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 23/12/2019 17:23

From anecdotal info I've read (I read a lot!!)
Some people thrive on it and feel amazing and some feel like shit!
You do need to give it a period of time to get into ketosis and this could take a month or so. I wouldn't do it long term but maybe switch to lowish carb if it suits you for the long term.
Worth a try.

DrPimplePopper · 23/12/2019 17:26

I did it on and off for about 6 months just before last Xmas and lost a stone and kept it off. I had lots of breaks and 'treats' during those months so I felt 1 stone was a good result. It wasn't full keto, but low carb. It's the only diet I ever tried where I wasn't low energy, moody and constantly hungry. I would definitely recommend trying it, what have you got to lose really? I never got the bad breath or 'keto flu' and it just worked for me where 5:2, fasting, WW or SW never clicked or lasted.

Hellofromtheotherside2020 · 23/12/2019 20:04

I eat keto (except for the past 4 months as I'm now about to give birth). It's amazing. I've never felt better in my life. The first week you'll get keto flu, where your body is adjusting to switching from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat for fuel. After the keto flu, you'll find you have heaps more energy, will be able to think clearer and sharper, the weight will melt away.

I've had friends and colleagues "do keto" and tell me that they feel rubbish and haven't lost any weight. When I've seen what they're eating, I can officially confirm that they aren't eating keto!! You need to ensure your carbs are low enough to stay in ketosis (buy testing strips off eBay). If you're eating too many carbs then you won't be in keto and you'll feel utterly shit and will not lose weight.

I've never had so much energy, I feel like a much better version of myself. I eat healthier than ever. I always laugh when people tell me it's not a sustainable diet when everything I eat is natural food, no refined food or sugar....all while they're tucking into their white bread and processed ham sandwich 😂

Give it a go and see how you feel. I've been doing it for almost six years and have never felt better. Actually since I've reintroduced carbs over the last few months, I already feel groggy, sluggish and like my thinking is clouded. Can't wait to get baby out, establish breastfeeding and then get back to keto!

StapleTakerOuter · 23/12/2019 20:06

Everyone I’ve known on it is a grumpy shit and never sustains it

GoodBoyPeachGoodBoy · 23/12/2019 20:09

Your breath stinks on keto because you are burning fat. It's not even that offensive. Clean teeth three times a day instead of twice will have it covered.

Keto makes you feel brilliant if you do it properly.

Andysbestadventure · 23/12/2019 20:19

Google how to do it properly and you will be eating loads of healthy fats, not bad ones.

Bubblegum53 · 24/12/2019 10:18

I started it to help with my fatigue and it has been amazing! I'm probably more low carb than keto but even that has helped. I'm now the lightest I've been in about 9 years. It's been a lifeline for me!!

Ilovelala · 24/12/2019 10:21

Ignore uneducated people telling you its unhealthy. Recommended to me by my consultant during pregnancy and beyond and she was doing it herself! I lost 4 stone in 3 months and will be returning to it after new year. It's the best I've ever felt. Watch 'the magic pill' on Netflix for further info.

Kenworthington · 24/12/2019 10:28

I started it last jan and lasted three months. I felt really well physically. However, I only lost 3 lbs and was angry all the time. Really angry and over emotional. Weird. So I stopped it. In June I started 16/8 diet (only eat between 12noon and 8pm) and quickly lost 1.5 stone. It’s been effortless too/ and no rage!

MsMarple · 24/12/2019 10:30

I really wanted it to work, stuck rigidly to plan for two weeks, but lost nothing at all. Very depressing! Great if it works for you, but don’t expect miracles or you might be disappointed.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 24/12/2019 10:35

There are lots of people who will tell you its unhealthy but to be honest it's rare that they are doing it properly.

Keto for me resolved health problems , I've lost just under 7 stone now , sleep better , have massive energy , it stopped migraines and stomach issues. It massively helped my mental health and resolved my period issues.

But ....its not a quick fix. Calorie restriction can really damage your body and after years of doing that I needed to resolve my health issues. It's not a diet and if you treat it as such , pp are right you will feel like crap. Cheat days are silly as they make you feel I'll.

Most people who comment about how they felt crap did it for a couple of months and gave up, you do have to see it through. Initially you will feel a bit crap because your body is adjusting to using fat as a source. If you see that bit through the effect is amazing. My blood pressure normalized for the first time in years , my cholesterol is dead on.

I eat more calories now than I ever have and I'm still losing weight.

Research the science behind it . Be clear what your body is doing and be prepared for stalls. It's hard to explain but you get this odd clarity , your mind is sharper and it shows you exactly what carbs and insulin resistance do to you.

However again, it is not a quick fix, if people do it as a diet (I'm not saying you will but some of the above negatives clearly did) then no you will feel I'll and it wont be sustainable)

For me , it gave me my life back.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 24/12/2019 10:37

To some of the comments about emotional responses. It can do that in the early days , a year on my hormones and emotions are so so much more level. You have to go through an adjustment period as you would if you were on medication. The end effect is very very much worth it. I dont think I've ever been so calm and controlled.

RozHuntleysStump · 24/12/2019 10:40

I lost three stone on keto/bootcamp type diet last year. I've kept it off. I have another 3 stone to lose which I will do next year. I tend to do hardcore bootcamp for a few weeks followed by lowish carb because I find it a bit much long term. I really recommend the bootcamp on this site for losing weight.

RozHuntleysStump · 24/12/2019 10:40

Meant to add.. my cholesterol has risen a bit though.

hamstersarse · 24/12/2019 10:49

I’ve been keto for a couple of years. It’s not unhealthy at all, I also had my bloods done recently and they too were tip top and I’m mid 40s. Literally everything was perfect, including all vitamins etc.

As pp have said, you do need to do it properly especially in the first few months and depending on what hell you’ve inflicted on your body thus far depends on how well it will ‘work’ initially. If you’ve yo yoed for much of your life, your body may take some time to adjust itself and heal.

If you combine it with intermittent fasting, your body and mind will thank you

SuePerb · 24/12/2019 10:53

What's the difference between Keto and low carb? How many carbs can you have on Keto?
