Or is it just my sister, speaking about the whole family in the third person.....?

God I hate them ....

I don't send, but like receiving them!

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 21:21

Really?

They are so self celebratory “look what we did this year” “aren’t we smug bastards” Grin

I wouldn’t. I find them very smug and insensitive. You don’t always know what the people on the receiving end have been through and they may not want someone else’s perfect family rubbed in their face.

Thisismadness · 20/12/2019 21:24

A relative used to send one, she’s stopped now and I miss it! It was very cringe-worthy, highly entertaining!

Doubletrouble99 · 20/12/2019 21:25

Still get one from a family who's girls are now at uni but still do the village panto with mummy and daddy + whole family do dance classes!! Yuck.

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 21:25

My sisters is cringe Sad

I put a short letter into some Christmas cards - only really to people that I don’t often see, mostly my old medical school friends. I wouldn’t send one to people that I see during the year.

It just has a one line update on what each member of the family is doing at the moment.

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 21:31

Unless there has been a salacious scandal I am not interested.

I don’t want to know how many holidays you have been on, how many promotions you have had, what classes the kids are taking.

I want the juicy gossip.

Do you think he’s cheating? Has the sparkle gone? Are you worried the kids might not get the A grades you predicted last year? Do you suspect the eldest is smoking and shagging the girlfriend?

That sort of thing.

Is the GF the beard we all think she is because you are so conservative he can’t possibly come out?

OP posts:
Glitterblue · 20/12/2019 21:35

I have never sent them but received one today from my cousin whose wife writes them n every year.

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 21:36

@Glitterblue.

In the third person?

OP posts:
SpeedofaSloth · 20/12/2019 21:37

I receive 2 each year regularly and I like them.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 20/12/2019 21:38

I sent one to relatives/friends who we don’t see often and aren’t on Facebook. It had a picture of my children on, one is new this year so for some it’s a chance to “see” the new member of the family since the birth announcement. It was definitely not smug and didn’t mention any holidays!

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 21:38

2 sides of A4?

OP posts:
pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 20/12/2019 21:39

Oh, and it was in the first person!

ViaSacra · 20/12/2019 21:39

Well, we’re all different. I like to hear what universities my friends’ children have ended up at, and what courses they’re studying.

I like to hear where people have been on holiday - it gives me ideas for when I retire in a couple of years.

bananahood · 20/12/2019 21:39

I got one today! Well, not me personally, it was addressed to the woman who used to live here and I opened it accidentally. It was quite an interesting one, the husband is going to be on the radio on Hogmanay and the wife is very excited about that. They also included a photo of their shed, I shit you not.

5foot5 · 20/12/2019 21:40

I sometimes put a short letter in to old friends I don't see anymore but it is not really a round robin because each one is written separately.

I do quite like getting them. We had an absolute belter today. This family are all so busy and high achieving it just makes me want to get back in to bed for a bit of a lie down after reading it.

Apolloanddaphne · 20/12/2019 21:40

We got one in a card the other day. I haven't read it. Really I don't care what this family has been up to. I find them so embarrassing.

SallyLovesCheese · 20/12/2019 21:41

My mum sends one to people she's not in regular contact with. Except hers is a few photographs, usually one of each family member, maybe a graduation or a new baby or, as is more usual, something fairly unoffensive like me and her outside the theatre when we went earlier this year.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 20/12/2019 21:41

Haha... no, one side with a third of that taken up with one picture... and size 12 font!

We do get one from a friend which is usually three sides of small type. She is single and child free so it’s literally about her. It has become a bit of a tradition to mock it...

PinkiOcelot · 20/12/2019 21:42

Do people really send these? I thought they were just on the telly.

FlaviaAlbia · 20/12/2019 21:46

Send your DSis a Janet and Roy. That'll being you some joy Grin

I'm not originally from UK, what exactly are those? Sounds amusing 😁

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 21:48
