Been prescribed with the above twice per day. Would it be terrible to take one 8 hours after first dose or do I need to stick strictly to 12 hours?

I reacted hideously to these.

I strongly suggest you leave 12 hours between doses, and take them with food.

Stick to the 12 hours.

I got hives all over when on these

They make me 🤮 I'd probably wait the 12 hours for the first couple of doses. Easier on the tummy.

IME 8 hours will be ok.
That said, they are quite harsh on your system so eat something first and most importantly, drink a pint of water with each one.
Also be prepared to get thrush.

Ok. I will do! Oh god to the hives!! Two lots of hives from two different posters. How many doses did you take before they surfaced?

I am allergic to penicillin so suspect it's why I'm prescribed these. I'll defo wait & take with food! Thanks for the replies.

I'm allergic to penicillin too and always get prescribed these. I have taken a double first dose before, but only on doctors advice. Other than that I always leave it 12 hours between as they can make me feel sick sometimes.

Oh man! Hives & thrush. Happy Christmas to me!

I didn’t get ‘hives’ or thrush if that reassures you. My face went really red and hot for an hour at the same time after taking it for the first two days and I did live with a rank taste in my mouth and indigestion for a week while i took them. The second after 8 hours will be tough going so maybe try 10 hours then 10 hours to get to your desired times.
In the mean time buy some gaviscon and gum and reassure yourself that they are probably better than the actual infection.

The pint of water marginally helps with the bad taste.
Oh, I always get the shits too.
You might be lucky and be fine, but best be warned!

I didn't get hives or thrush but I did enjoy vomiting, diarrhoea and very nearly fainting. Oh, and the worst stomach cramps I've ever had. I would genuinely rather have had the infection that's those fucking tablets.

I was also given them as I can't tolerate penicillin.

Try taking a probiotic while you're on them

I’ve taken Clarithromycin a few times with absolutely no issues and I’ve never stuck strictly to 12 hours .

I am also allergic to penicillin; they made me so sick , I had to take one 4 times a day

Terrible stuff

They do unsettle my stomach but eating plenty and taking them with milk sort it out for me.

Had a horrible taste in my mouth after taking these, apart from that I was fine and I normally get thrush at the drop of a hat.

I've just finished a weeks course of these for cellulitis. By day 2 I'd have happily chopped off my arm if it meant I didn't have to take any more.
Nausea, diarrhoea, hideous stomach cramps, funny taste, indigestion, dizziness, they're awful. No thrush though!

QuiteGood · 20/12/2019 18:56

Did people who suffered all these horrendous side effects, do so after the first one? Only had the one & feel fine apart from the original cause of taking them. Flu that's turned bacterial. Actually feeling mildly (emphasis on the mildly) better. Never seen an improvement after just one before but think that dose might be quite high - equivalent of 2. But not really sure if I've made that up.

Sorry to say it's horrid. Had it for an infected finger. It was like all day morning sickness. I seriously thought about giving up on them but didn't mainly because I would have felt guilty about encouraging antibiotic resistance. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news🤢

Took about two days to get the full nausea effect.

Wow, OP. You’re going to be terrified to take these now! Hope you feel better soon (and that you tolerate the tablets well :))

Do they help prevent thrush or all the other side effects?

I've been on metronidazole a few times & been fine. I think they are the kind lots of people feel foul on. Don't know if that makes any difference to me having a better time of things. I can't deny being a bit unnerved now but have been feeling so orrible, I'll have to face it. Yikes!

My dad took these and he said never again. Horrendous taste, lack of appetite, nausea to the point that he ended up in hospital with dehydration. His doctor said it's an awful antibiotic but if you're allergic to penicillin, you don't have a lot of choice.

Report

blindmansbluff · 20/12/2019 19:09

I had no side effects whatsoever so fingers crossed you'll be the same!
