To refuse to touch my work computer

Just found out that a colleague I job share with came into work yesterday (Tuesday) despite having a sickness & diarrhoea bug Sunday afternoon through to Monday evening. Last week she had all 3 kids off school with the bug at different points & her husband also had two days off work. So it's obviously contagious.

I just think that is so bloody selfish. We use the same desk, telephone, chair etc & I've now convinced myself I'm going to catch whatever the hell it is (norovirus has been in local schools so highly likely it's that)!! I've got so much left to for Christmas before breaking up on Friday & if I now end up catching it it will probably spears through my own family over Christmas week.... I'm actually incandescent with rage!!

The worse of it is that it's actually really quiet at work so would of been no hardship to anyone if she hadn't come in.... AIBU to fuck off home & refuse to touch anything??

Update. I started writing this at 9am and didn't hit post... bottled out of going home so I'm still sat here at work spreading her germs all over myself 😡

You could have wiped it down with Dettox etc. That’s what I’m doing this time of year.

steff13 · 18/12/2019 11:59

I probably would have used some disinfectant wipes on it first.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 18/12/2019 12:05

Do you not wipe everything down before you use it anyway? I never use a computer I havent wiped with antibacterial wipes first

LolaDabestest · 18/12/2019 12:10

No I couldn't cope with that I wouldn't have sat there who needs the shits the week before Xmas 🤢

Dyrne · 18/12/2019 12:13

Agree with others - if you’re that paranoid you should buy a pack of Dettol wipes to wipe the place down before you use it. I always wipe hot desks down during cold/flu season!

The way sick leave is treated in most companies I don’t blame her for coming in if she had stopped being ill. The ‘48 hour rule’ for schools is mainly because children are crap at maintaining hand wash hygiene; with adults the risk is reduced.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 18/12/2019 12:13

Dont be mardy. Plenty of handwashing. These bugs are everywher you go so you cant really avoid them. Some are airbourne spread as well. It is nt just a work thing.

FadedRed · 18/12/2019 12:15

I never go anywhere in the flu and norovirus season without wear the full protective gear. It’s the only way.....

To refuse to touch my work computer
TellerTuesday4EVA · 18/12/2019 12:16

Didn't even think of dettol wipes... going to invest in a packet to keep in my bag. Rural office with no shop nearby so I can't just nip out for some I did wipe the keyboard & mouse with some bleach as that's all that was in the cupboard but I fear the damage will already be done!!

Get some anti vac gel and stop being such a big baby.

Try getting the tube, you will be riddled with cold every month so thank yourself lucky.

gastropod · 18/12/2019 12:20

Unless you convey whatever it is to your mouth or nose, surely you are unlikely to catch anything from the surfaces in the office anyway? As long as you wash your hands properly I'm sure you'll be fine.

thenightsky · 18/12/2019 12:22

I have to hot desk and always anti bac wipe the phone handset, mouse and keyboard as best I can, as soon as I arrive at work. I rarely catch colds, in fact I can't recall the last time I had one.

Stripyhoglets1 · 18/12/2019 12:22

Wash hands like mad until you finish for Christmas- but yes it's inconsiderate of her. I do t shares keyboard as I have my own but we hot desk so those sharing having wipes to use before touching equipment.

banivani · 18/12/2019 12:22

No guarantee that antiBACTERIAL stuff will kill viruses now though.

TheReluctantCountess · 18/12/2019 12:23

Get some of that detol spray for future use.

As far as Norovirus goes, I don’t think wipes etc kill it.

Ginfordinner · 18/12/2019 12:23

Antibac wipes are anti bacterial. Norovirus is a virus, so antibac wipes won't make any difference.

Indecisivelurcher · 18/12/2019 12:25

Lol to antiBACTERIAL wipes to prevent a VIRUS

BarbaraofSeville · 18/12/2019 12:25

I never use a computer I havent wiped with antibacterial wipes first

I've never antibacced anything and am never sick. Does your paranoia stretch to door handles, cash machines, chip and pin, cash, and everything else we all touch daily?

AutumnRose1 · 18/12/2019 12:26

I hear you OP

I always wipe down shared keyboards and phones

I have Sterizar as well as Dettol.

I have to use the Tube as well. Constant handwashing, nasal spraying etc etc has reduced the number of times I get colds as well. Plus I blatantly tell colleagues with colds to keep a distance. I have asthma so it's nice to catch fewer colds!

FadedRed · 18/12/2019 12:29

(Diluted) bleach will be effective against most viruses, and just washing with detergent and hot water will physically remove micro-organisms and change the pH of the surfaces cleaned which can destroy some microorganisms. Anyone ‘hot-desking’ should get into the habit of cleaning the shared equipment before and after use where possible.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 18/12/2019 12:29

Love hearing how people don’t use a computer unless they’ve wiped it down first.

KatharinaRosalie · 18/12/2019 12:30

It's just how they're called. Dettol Antibacterial wipes according to the packaging also kill 99% of viruses.

makingmyway10 · 18/12/2019 12:33

I job share and at least two colleagues use my desk sometimes more. I always wipe down my keyboard, mouse and telephone with Dettol wipes when I get to work. No hassle and keeps away the germs as much as is possible. I also keep hand sanitiser in my desk drawer and use frequently. Every couple of weeks I wipe down the arms of the chair and the desk drawer handles and the monitor too Grin easy to do.

LemonPrism · 18/12/2019 12:33

Get some anti bac wipes and use a new keyboard

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/12/2019 12:34

Even if the anti-bacterial element of the wipes doesn't kill viruses the wiping action will remove most of them reducing the risk of contagion. Just like washing your hands with regular soap doesn't kill anything, it just removes it from your hands.
