To refuse to touch my work computer

TellerTuesday4EVA · 18/12/2019 11:57

Just found out that a colleague I job share with came into work yesterday (Tuesday) despite having a sickness & diarrhoea bug Sunday afternoon through to Monday evening. Last week she had all 3 kids off school with the bug at different points & her husband also had two days off work. So it's obviously contagious.

I just think that is so bloody selfish. We use the same desk, telephone, chair etc & I've now convinced myself I'm going to catch whatever the hell it is (norovirus has been in local schools so highly likely it's that)!! I've got so much left to for Christmas before breaking up on Friday & if I now end up catching it it will probably spears through my own family over Christmas week.... I'm actually incandescent with rage!!

The worse of it is that it's actually really quiet at work so would of been no hardship to anyone if she hadn't come in.... AIBU to fuck off home & refuse to touch anything??

Update. I started writing this at 9am and didn't hit post... bottled out of going home so I'm still sat here at work spreading her germs all over myself 😡

Just wipe it down Xmas Confused

FlashingFedora · 18/12/2019 12:35

I don't use keyboard/pads etc until I've wiped them down either after a colleague came in once with a flu virus right before Christmas and I ended up in hospital on Christmas day with pneumonia which as a single parent I can assure you was not fun. We have clinell wipes though which kill noro, Mrsa etc as we're in a clinical environment. Not sure if you can buy them over the counter. I keep some at home too luckily as Ds came down with noro last week, so far I've escaped it.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/12/2019 12:36

I work in a school & job share. Always have wipes to hand.

Saucery · 18/12/2019 12:37

Have you seen the correct hand washing info too, OP? NHS website I think, or just Google.
We’ve had a bacterial infection go round at work too, so anti-bac Dettox wipes useful anyway. I’ve escaped flu, strep A, Noro using them with thorough and frequent handwashing, never touching face while at computer etc.

custardbear · 18/12/2019 12:40

You breath in hundreds of bugs and viruses a day, don't worry if it's for you it won't pass you by!
Wipe down and move on with your life

TheTrollFairy · 18/12/2019 12:41

Bleach will help. Make sure you wash your hands throughout the day and avoid touching your face/mouth unless you have washed your hands

CakeandCustard28 · 18/12/2019 12:42

I would just made a point and sprayed it all with dettol.

paranoidmum2 · 18/12/2019 12:43

I never use a computer I havent wiped with antibacterial wipes first

Are you a lawyer?

Witchend · 18/12/2019 12:44

People who wipe down the computer. Do you also wipe down the chip and pin machines which must be much worse.

Span1elsRock · 18/12/2019 12:47

It'll be the phone, stapler, everything she touched sadly.

Just wash your hands really really well and often, especially when making a drink or eating food.

And don't touch your face.

Kazzyhoward · 18/12/2019 12:47

Do you not wipe everything down before you use it anyway? I never use a computer I havent wiped with antibacterial wipes first

Same here. It's something I've always done. I'd never dream of handling a computer, mouse, telephone, etc., without giving it a wipe-over.

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/12/2019 12:48

Had a good laugh at your post.Grin Grin

Hilda44 · 18/12/2019 12:49

I think the best thing to do is wash your hands properly, frequently.

Kazzyhoward · 18/12/2019 12:49

No, but I wash my hands regularly when out shopping and wouldn't touch my face or eat/drink anything without washing first. If there are no loos around to wash my hands, I'll use the wipes I always carry in my bag.

sandybanana · 18/12/2019 12:55

Always wipe computers down with antibacterial wipes

Would never touch a computer without doing so

Paranoid about things like that

sandybanana · 18/12/2019 12:56

I use clinell wipes... they protect against Norovirus.

Dettol wipes won't do anything.

RiftGibbon · 18/12/2019 12:59

I've never anti-bac'd anything either and am rarely ill. As long as you wash your hands properly before eating or touching your nose/mouth you will be fine.

NotherOp · 18/12/2019 13:00

@BarbaraofSeville
Yes.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/12/2019 13:01

Bleach is fine. Hot soapy water on a cloth also good. Wash your hands frequently. Antibacs breed superbugs, so actually better not to use them.

Knock back some Sambucol too.
Norovirus is highly contagious, so you are right, she should have stayed at home !

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 18/12/2019 13:05

I've never anti-bacced anything in my life, and get nothing but a mild cold maybe once every 2 years. Bloody hell, people really wipe down their computers! Life's too short. Never had a sickness bug either.

Ohyesiam · 18/12/2019 13:07

Detox wipes don’t work on norovirus, they are great for bacteria.
But washing your hands is really effective.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 18/12/2019 13:07

Oh and I touch my face/mouth constantly and bite my nails. Still never get ill.

Honeybee85 · 18/12/2019 13:08

I think YANBU to worry about it.
But I would perhaps be more worried about doorhandles and the toilet.

To protect yourself I’d suggest to use Dettol wipes, basically any type of wipes that contains alcohol should do. And wash your hands!

Wow. I have never wiped down a computer anywhere. I have only had a sickness bug twice in my life. Both times after clearing up after a sick toddler (one wasn't even mine!).
