Poland might leave the EU

Awful for all the Polish workers here who may well have to leave the UK when Brexit happens and then, if they leave the EU, won't be able to work elsewhere in the EU either.

What an awful situation for them to be in, all that uncertainty.

Where are you hearing that?Hmm

Stravapalava · 17/12/2019 20:55

Are you referring to this OP?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/12/2019 20:56

From the brief google I’ve just done it’s because their judiciary reforms are not inline with EU rules and risk undermining EU treaties. They’ve also opted out of the Green Deal target- and given their stance on immigration which I won’t rant on, I say let they’ve made themselves clear.

rhubarbcrumbles · 17/12/2019 20:57

yes, thanks for the link - it wouldn't let me post it on my phone Confused

I think this is not the first time Poland is being pulled by EU for breaking some rules. Human rights too

Hirsutefirs · 17/12/2019 21:12

Are they trying to avoid a hard Poxit?

AutumnRose1 · 17/12/2019 21:15

Oh no, surely it would be called Pegsit?

AllergicToAMop · 17/12/2019 21:15

Poxit

Nononono😂
That sounds like something local hospital should deal with. Not government 😂

Cheeseboardcriminal · 17/12/2019 21:19

Polexit?

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 17/12/2019 21:23

How bizzare it says because of differences between eu law and Polish law.

I thought we were told there is no impact of any laws?

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 17/12/2019 21:23

Definitely POXIT

Bluetrews25 · 17/12/2019 21:24

Polaxit?

PrittSticky · 17/12/2019 21:24

I would have thought Hungary would be forced out before Poland.

Andysbestadventure · 17/12/2019 21:27

Pexit

AdoptedBumpkin · 17/12/2019 21:27

Feel sorry for the Polish if this is true.

Littlemeadow123 · 17/12/2019 21:32

Quite a few countries want to leave EU. They are just waiting and watching to see what happens to Britain once we pull out before they decide whether or not to hold their own referendum.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/12/2019 21:33

The Polish govt is becoming increasingly authoritarian and trying to control Polish judges to vote the party line

This clashes with the (minimum) standards of democracy the EU demands of its members, which include requiring an independent judiciary

Poland and also Hungary could be suspended by the EU under Article 7 of the Lisbon treaty
This has been rumbling on for years, as the populist ruling party in these 2 countries keeps trying to tighten their grip on power.

So many decades under communist dictatorship caused their democracies to be fragile even afterwards, without the long democratic traditions of Western countries

pointythings · 17/12/2019 21:37

It's a totally different scenario from Brexit - Poland risks being kicked out, not leaving by choice. Same for Hungary. Both of these countries are moving away from democracy and towards dictatorship, so it is only right that measures should be taken.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/12/2019 21:38

Other countries are NOT eager to leave the EU

Before Brexit, the German AfD and France's National Front were suggesting it
But since watching the shambles of Brexit - a laughing stock across much of the world, not just the EU - those policies have been dropped down a deep hole

Even Poland and Hungary don't want to leave

  • that's for economic reasons, including the billions in EU regional development funds that are boosting their economies from the wrecks left by the USSR

However, if they continue to act undemocratically, then they are likely to be suspended by the EU

Gwenhwyfar · 17/12/2019 21:39

"Quite a few countries want to leave EU. They are just waiting and watching to see what happens to Britain once we pull out before they decide whether or not to hold their own referendum."

This is rubbish put about by Brexiteers. There is Euro-scepticism in some countries and unhappiness in places like Greece with the financial situation, but it's not true that 'quite a few countries want to leave'.

HunnyMummy1993 · 17/12/2019 21:40

brilliantmaps.com/eu-exit/

You are all WRONG. It is Withdrawsaw.

rslsys · 17/12/2019 21:40

Both of these countries are moving away from democracy and towards dictatorship, so it is only right that measures should be taken

Similar to the UK, then?

winnybella · 17/12/2019 21:40

Poland doesn’t want to leave the EU Hmm
The BBC article says that the Polish Supreme Court is warning that it may be necessary if the judicial reforms go ahead as they would deny the supremacy of EU law over the national one etc etc
I imagine the reforms will not go through. In any case, the EU doesn’t want to kick Poland out and Poland has no intention of leaving.

pointythings · 17/12/2019 21:41

rslsys sadly quite true.

cdtaylornats · 17/12/2019 21:43

rslsys - no there was a danger of that but fortunately Corbyn lost.
