To recycle Christmas cards as soon as I open

lovemenorca · 17/12/2019 18:05

I open them and immediately put them in the recycling bin. I can’t bear the clutter! They make a lovely cosy Christmassy room look like a primary school classroom IMO

Am I alone?

I feel a little guilty, but I always read and enjoy the sentiment, but actually displaying.... no chance

Ps and I send 4 myself (to aged relatives - it really seems important to them hence why I do it, and enclose a photo of the children) , and would take no offence whatsoever to discover they too are recycled!

I immediately recycle the ones from people I don’t like and don’t feel guilty about it.

coconuttelegraph · 17/12/2019 18:07

Wouldn't it be so much better for the environment if you asked everyone not to send you cards.

What a awful waste in so many ways.

Gertie75 · 17/12/2019 18:08

I keep ones from my family and best friend but all others get recycled, there's just too many, both dd's bring them home from school plus dh's work and it's his birthday this week so will have cards everywhere.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 17/12/2019 18:09

YABU - this seems so clinical!

elmosducks · 17/12/2019 18:09

I do it with all cards. Hate the clutter and the environmental impact. Never send them either.

Love a homemade card from kids though

lovemenorca · 17/12/2019 18:11

* Love a homemade card from kids though*

Yep- I make an exception for these.
Everything else.... ♻️

I chuck all birthday cards for me straight in the recycling. My dd keeps the Christmas cards and makes a display but if it was up to me they'd go straight in the bin too

ButtercupGirI · 17/12/2019 18:27

Glad those days of xmas class for the whole class is over.

Nottobesoldseparately · 17/12/2019 18:31

I use the few I get as next year's gift tags.

And have done for about 20 years now!

DecomposingRat · 17/12/2019 18:34

I haven’t sent any Christmas for over a decade but still get sent a few ( they go straight in the recycling). An outdated waste of time, money and resources.

PineappleDanish · 17/12/2019 18:35

YANBU.

We don't send any. Any received, straight in the recycle bin.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 17/12/2019 18:39

I remember when I was a child, we got loads of cards. My dm would string them up on ribbons. I only get a handful now, and send even fewer (mostly to / from the older generation). Reasonable (and sensible) to recycle after Christmas, but doing it before seems a bit mean.

myself2020 · 17/12/2019 18:41

Same here - open, groan, bin. waste of ressources and money in my opinion

wildcherries · 17/12/2019 18:43

Same. Don't send any.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 17/12/2019 18:48

I don't even open them Blush

Cooroo · 17/12/2019 18:56

Wow. I put mine out around the room and enjoy them. After new year I cut up those I can for gift tags and recycle everything else. I hate to think of someone sending a card and you can't be bothered to do more than glance at it.

81Byerley · 17/12/2019 18:58

What a miserable lot you are!

formerbabe · 17/12/2019 18:58

Thing is I have a fairly modern house...no mantel pieces, or anywhere to really display them

81Byerley · 17/12/2019 19:00

I use miniature pegs and hang them from strings round the room.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/12/2019 19:01

I do the same OP. Any my dc make go into a memory box.

OwlinaTree · 17/12/2019 19:03

Very miserable to chuck them away straight away. What a waste.

FakeChristmasTreesaremynewnorm · 17/12/2019 19:05

I like them I wouldn't want to live in a house so minimalist and stylish that Christmas cards seem like clutter. I would have to declutter myself for one thing as I am a bit old and scruffy and not in the best possible taste.

Havaina · 17/12/2019 19:06

This reminds me of a line from Pride and Prejudice:

‘Lovemenorca, this is your house, these are your Christmas cards. You may arrange them in any way you wish. Lady Mumsnet will lever know.’

ICouldBeVotingTactically · 17/12/2019 19:13

I'm with Cooroo, 81Byerley and Owlina. Do you all hate Christmas then?

FakeChristmas... sums it up for me (except for the 'fake Christmas tree' bit - has to be a real one!!)

PBo83 · 17/12/2019 19:14

YABU - I don't 'do' cards but if someone has taken the time to write and send me one it's disrespectful to put it straight in the bin.

If you don't want to receive them then ask people not to send them.
