To recycle Christmas cards as soon as I open

I open them and immediately put them in the recycling bin. I can’t bear the clutter! They make a lovely cosy Christmassy room look like a primary school classroom IMO

Am I alone?

I feel a little guilty, but I always read and enjoy the sentiment, but actually displaying.... no chance

Ps and I send 4 myself (to aged relatives - it really seems important to them hence why I do it, and enclose a photo of the children) , and would take no offence whatsoever to discover they too are recycled!

My council have sent leaflets out saying you can't recycle christmas cards or wrapping paper as they often have plastic coating or glitter on them so YABU. Put them in the normal bin

itgetshardereveryday · 17/12/2019 20:42

I usually don't like the clutter of cards but my dad died less than a fortnight ago and the sympathy cards are really bringing me some comfort.
I also really wish I'd kept all my Christmas cards from my dad over the years Sad

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie

I don't even open them blush

^You are so rude

Horehound · 17/12/2019 20:48

That poster is lying for attention...

Horehound · 17/12/2019 20:49

Hope you are ok @itgetshardereveryday Flowers

Wow, I hate clutter but I love cards. I see them as a lovely way to spend time showing you appreciate someone. I only send them to my closest friends and family and both next door neighbours but I'd be gutted if no one sent me one or if I knew they'd just binned them as clutter!

Mummyshark2018 · 17/12/2019 21:10

You're doing well op, I rarely open mine before I recycle them unless someone hands it to me and I feel obligated.

1Morewineplease · 17/12/2019 21:19

I do what used to be done many years ago, basically as I got fed up of ‘displaying’ them and they’d come adrift, which is to put them all in a nice basket in the hall and visitors could ‘peruse’ them if they wished.
I don’t like them stuck on doors , walls or shelves .
This year is the last year that we will send cards and we’ve popped a note into all the cards that we’ve sent saying we’ll, from now on, spend the money for cards on a charitable donation.
Going forward , we will email or SM our sentiments. However, elderly relatives will still receive a card.

MrsGrindah · 17/12/2019 21:24

People love/ like you.. don’t be so ungrateful! Yeah it’s a token gesture but you might be glad of it when you are old and grey and alone!

PBo83 · 17/12/2019 21:38

Just tell people you bin their cards. Job sorted. No one will send you any next year.

Or probably bother talking to you.

I agree I hate the clutter of them

Honeyroar · 17/12/2019 21:46

There’s a lot of things I don’t bother with at Xmas, but I do like cards on my bookshelves.

I don’t quite get the sentiment that it makes your living room look like a nursery classroom when you only keep the ones made by children.

I don’t think I’ve got any friends who don’t put up cards, but it’s up to everyone individually what they do with them.

greenlavender · 17/12/2019 21:56

Only on Mumsnet

nowaypose · 17/12/2019 22:10

I’m a bit of a card hoarder so keep most of them from birthdays and Christmases, have boxes of cards in the loft.

It would be more environmentally sound just to ask people not to send them, the waste is pretty horrible.

caroline161 · 17/12/2019 22:11

Hate them, sometimes I don't even open them. Actually have a phobia, think it's disrespectful of people to send them when I've asked them not to. Waste of time and money.

Lougle · 17/12/2019 22:14

Marie Kondo would be proud of you all Xmas Grin

Are you actually serious? I hate the word 'snowflake' but sometimes...

FruityWidow · 17/12/2019 23:15

Wow, I don't really join in with most festivities so no tree, no turkey, no wrapping etc but even I would leave a card up for a day or two before recycling.

Now I'm wondering if I've wasted my evening writing cards and whether they will just end up in the recycling before even being opened, as one poster does, or opened and recycled straight away. I love receiving cards and hearing from people I don't otherwise hear from!

katy1213 · 17/12/2019 23:38

They hide the dust. Haven't received a single nice one this year, though.

MistyCloud · 17/12/2019 23:41

@Glitterblue Agree.

Today I posted cards for the first time in maybe 20 years, I really enjoyed writing them and sticking the stamps on. Felt very nostalgic but the reason I did it was with busy lives, mental health issues high etc I thought it would be a nice thing to do, a hand written card wishing them a happy Christmas, hopefully some of them are opened or appreciated. I received a few Birthday cards this year when usually it’s a text or Facebook message and it made me realise how much more the cards meant.
