AIBU?
Dog in coffee shop
Nixby3 · 14/12/2019 14:24
Hi all, posted in the pet section but got no reply. Basically I was in my regular coffee shop the other day when I saw a dog cock his leg and wee on a stand selling packs of coffee leaving a puddle on the floor. The owner saw this but made no mention to the staff and didn't seem fussed at all. To top it off she let the dog wonder around on one of those really long leads sniffing around everyone (it was a busy time of day). I thought her behaviour was really appalling and had no regard for anyone else.
I should mention that the coffee shop is quite relaxed about people bringing in their dogs and the majority of owners keep their dogs on short leads by their feet and I have no problem with this. What annoys me is when owners let their dogs walk around sniffing at you when you're eating and drinking. Not everyone likes/is comfortable around dogs.
AIBU to think the owner whose dog weed acted appallingly? And if you bring your dog in you should only do so if it can behave and to keep it on a lead. It is a coffee shop after all not a park!
Am I being unreasonable?

Yes the dog owner acted appallingly.
Yes dogs should be kept on a short leash and not allowed to sniff other patrons.
Vote with your feet. Go elsewhere. Find a dog-free coffee shop and leave those who want to have a coffee in a place that stinks of dog piss to it. This one sounds fucking rank anyway.

That's disgusting. Surely against environmental standards? I love dogs, but not when I'm eating, and not having piss on what you're buying is hardly ground-breaking. I'd never use that place again

We have a dog and I'd be beyond embarrassed if he weed in a cafe or pub. I'd clean it up immediately and apologise profusely. We keep rookiedog on a short lead when we're in an eating establishment and the only time that has not worked is when he managed to chew his way through an extendable lead. Cue initial confusion when I saw him wandering round the cafe.
In your situation I'd write a review of your experience on Tripadvisor, I'd certainly not visit a place like that.

It is not rank at all - its a nice Italian coffee shop that serves good food and proper strong coffee unlike Americanised chains. Like I said the odd dog on a short lead is not a problem, what annoys me is the attitude of some dog owners who just assume that everyone loves their dog!

But I was having a stressful morning and being a very hormonal heavily pregnant woman I just wanted to go.
I’ve been all of the above too, plus sick as a dog at the same time - I still wouldn’t let other people buy coffee that has been pissed on by a dog I don’t see how you’re any better than the dog owner now to be honest...

YABU-You chose not to say anything. Nobody would defend weeing on coffee and it needed sorting out. But you are really just using this as an excuse to rant about dogs in cafes.
Some coffee shops allow dogs, many people like this and would rather share their space with dogs than dog-hating or dog-phobic humans. There are lots of cafes which don't allow canines inside. Pick a place which suits you and stop whining!

I would have complained, wouldn’t like to drink/eat in a place where there’s dog pee on the floor and products they use/ sell 🤢.
Also I really dislike this kind of dog owners as they give the rest of us a bad name. Their behavior causes others with well behaved dogs to be banned from certain places as owners are sick and tired of putting up with the bad behaving ones and their equally shitty owners and decide to ban all dogs from their business.
YANBU

Personally I don't go into cafes etc which accept dogs. (I don't go to houses with them either.) If dogs are allowed into a cafe they need to be under very close control. OP the coffee shop you went to sounds very lax, and probably has many other hygiene issues. I'd avoid it from now on it I was you.

And BTW it was coffee in packs to put in a coffee grinder at home not the coffee they were serving and when I left a member of staff had already put a yellow cone down so I assume they already knew.
If people just want to be nasty why post? Why be hateful.
