Dog in coffee shop

Hi all, posted in the pet section but got no reply. Basically I was in my regular coffee shop the other day when I saw a dog cock his leg and wee on a stand selling packs of coffee leaving a puddle on the floor. The owner saw this but made no mention to the staff and didn't seem fussed at all. To top it off she let the dog wonder around on one of those really long leads sniffing around everyone (it was a busy time of day). I thought her behaviour was really appalling and had no regard for anyone else.
I should mention that the coffee shop is quite relaxed about people bringing in their dogs and the majority of owners keep their dogs on short leads by their feet and I have no problem with this. What annoys me is when owners let their dogs walk around sniffing at you when you're eating and drinking. Not everyone likes/is comfortable around dogs.
AIBU to think the owner whose dog weed acted appallingly? And if you bring your dog in you should only do so if it can behave and to keep it on a lead. It is a coffee shop after all not a park!

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

I wouldn't stay on aibu if you think this is nasty OP. Nasty would have been an unknowing staff member picking up a pissy coffee container.

Why say nothing to staff but post how bad the owner is? Yes they are terrible but it's not pleasant to look the other way either. You would have been better omitting the fact that you chose not to say and said a staff member noticed.

PepePig · 14/12/2019 15:36

You should have said something Hmm. Coming on here and complaining is a complete waste of time if you didn't speak up.

Hate threads like these. People run home to their laptops to complain about something but stand there quiet as a mouse when it's happening in front of them. Stop attention seeking Biscuit

Pinkblueberry · 14/12/2019 15:47

To be fair, people have been kind so far if you compare it to other threads on AIBU.

Very kind. Surprisingly so. You complain about a dog owner letting their dog piss all over café merchandise (YANBU - obviously that’s bad form), whilst forgetting that you yourself didn’t say anything to stop people touching/ buying it Confused which is also very bad form. What do you expect people to say to that??

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/12/2019 15:51

Having been the owner of a dog/puppy that peed in a coffee shop I can tell you the only correct reaction Blush Xmas Confused

You leap up, apologise, ask for cloth, mop, bucket. Juggle your dog, lead, coffee, bags, coat, hop from foot to foot, squeaking further apologies until the staff tell you to sit down and stay out of their way while they clean it up.

Then, and only then, do you notice the varying degrees of amusement and shock on the faces of other customers. So you start apologising again.

You end up with a coffee refill, a dog biscuit and some new friends- all of whom reassure you that it happens, but you have start somewhere.

But only in really dog friendly places. Elsewhere you are treated as though you just poisoned the milk bottles (an old Tales of the Unexpected plot).

Short answer: I don't take my dog into cafes that don't allow them. Maybe you should avoid those that do!

Clymene · 14/12/2019 15:52

Hateful? People are just saying it's a bit odd that you didn't let the staff know.

Of course no one is going to say that's acceptable. My dog weed in a Pets at Home once and I was mortified. They were very nice about it but I haven't taken him back since Blush

NoSauce · 14/12/2019 15:56

Nasty? Hateful? That’s not happened.

What did you expect from this thread? You saw a dog piss on packets of coffee and said nothing but started a thread to ask if you were U to be annoyed! Odd.

PositiveVibez · 14/12/2019 16:11

I don't think you will find anyone one here saying yabu and the dog owner was in the right.

Ywbu to not have mentioned it to the staff or to the dog owner.

Wotrewelookinat · 14/12/2019 16:18

I’m a dog owner and think that’s disgusting. And if I’d seen that happen I would have said something to the staff. Yuk.

Shockers · 14/12/2019 16:48

I don’t understand why, on seeing that, a person wouldn’t automatically shout out, ‘The dog is weeing!’.

MrMeSeeks · 14/12/2019 19:53

I can understand not saying anything to the owner as you don't know how they would respond, but why not say anything to staff?

WorraLiberty · 14/12/2019 19:56

I voted YABU

But only because it was such a ridiculous question

And I agree with PPs, you should've mentioned it to the coffee shop owner.

DianaT1969 · 14/12/2019 20:24

Nobody was being hateful or attacking you. You didn't say anything about staff seeing it, or cleaning it up. Leaving us all thinking that you were happy for the general public to buy bags of coffee beans with dog wee on.
A quiet word with a staff member on your way out doesn't seem too much to ask of a hormonal, pregnant woman.

DrManhattan · 14/12/2019 20:28

I wouldn't ever go in that coffee shop again

Lockheart · 14/12/2019 20:35

"AIBU to think the owner whose dog weed acted appallingly?"

... why on earth do you even have to ask that question? Is there some doubt in your mind that is making you wonder if it's OK?

Cryalot2 · 14/12/2019 20:49

As a dog owner we try to use such. But they are rare here. One place has an annex for people with dogs and it is usually packed .
I think dogs should be on a short lead in such a place . You must have them under control for hygiene sake .

Cryalot2 · 14/12/2019 20:55

I meant to add ok you didn't feel up to mentioning it . I still would let them know, ring them or message them .
There had to have been others that noticed it also.

Frenchw1fe · 14/12/2019 21:04

I take my dog into coffee shops but always walk her first so she has chance to do her business and I choose a table where we can keep her away from other people.
Once we sat in a corner and a woman came in after us and sat on a sofa right next to us, (the cafe was quiet ) she then asked us to move our dog. Very bizarre.

Cherrysoup · 14/12/2019 21:18

YANBU, that’s horrible. Did you tell the cafe staff?

Deadjinglebellringer · 14/12/2019 21:36

I just don't understand why people have to bring their dogs everywhere they go. We were at a carnival recently and I couldn't believe how many people had brought their dogs. It was packed and very noisy, full of small screaming children running around, surely that must be stressful for animals? When I go to a cafe the last thing I want is a smelly dog sniffing around me, if I wanted that I would stay at home. And bringing them on the school run, into the car, drop DC at school, back in the car and straight home, what's the point?

Moominfan · 14/12/2019 21:38

They're ruining it for everyone

Moondust001 · 14/12/2019 21:42

So you posted this and didn't get the reaction you wanted, so you thought you'd have another go at it? Unbelievable. And I mean your story. Just another excuse to have a go at people who have dogs.

Readthisearlier · 14/12/2019 22:10

I wonder what he was wondering?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/12/2019 09:50

what's the point?. Some people like them. Many dogs like the stimulation of crowded places.

Many people aren't you and have completely different lives!?

WaggleWiggle · 15/12/2019 14:03

I think the dog owner and not OP is the only one responsible for a dog pissing all over the coffee. Disgusting crappy owner. I have two dogs and they are not allowed to behave in a way that causes a nuisance to others. I take clean up wipes EVERYWHERE in case there is ever a muddy paw print that needs cleaning, never mind wee! I think you should have told the staff though, if you didn’t want confrontation with the owner.
