Didn't pay for items in shop

Just been to boots with my dh and baby. Had 4 items to purchase, dh put them all on the little cash desk/counter and was looking at some toothbrushes on a stand next to us. I was holding baby so juggling baby and getting my card out of my bag and talking to the cashier. Anyway paid on contactless not really paying attention to how much it came to and at that point dh turned back to us, put the items in the baby bag and we left.

We have just got home and I've realised on the receipt she has only charged us for 2 out of 4 items! So we should have paid £14 and we paid £4 😳

Obviously this was an accident but I'm a bit mortified in case they think we did it on purpose or something! We are a small town and I go to that boots a lot so I don't want my name blacklisted so to speak!

I want to ring and explain but dh says that's overkill and I should just leave it as clearly it was an accident. AIBU if I ring? I'm happy to pay next time we are in (can't go back now as dh is going away for work conference and taking the car).

Ring them, advise you're unable to go back, they will probably do nothing.

Personally I live for moments like this but you will have hundreds of posters now saying that's STEALING and they're saying that because it IS.

If you admit it they can charge you. Don't put ten pounds in a charity tin if you feel bad.

I would phone them. I wouldn't phrase it as "I didn't pay" but as "I was not charged". I once did a weekly shop at Tesco and when I came to pay there was a problem with the till. It was a few years ago - I was paying by cheque.

The manager had to come and sort it out and everyone was getting flustered. I took my trolley and receipt and cheque guarantee card and when I got home I found I still had the cheque in my hand! I phoned them and said I would bring the money in the next time I was in the shop. I went back a week later with the receipt and the cheque and they told me to forget about it!

It was a mistake, fling some money in charity and forget about it.

Keep it and move on and buy a takeaway with the extra tenner.

Of course (as has been said,) LOADS of people will come on and tell you wot a vile cah you are, for not taking the tenner back!

It was an accident OP, not done deliberately, so try not to fret. It's extremely unlikely they'll ever know what happened. If you really can't move on then pop a few quid in the next charity collector's tin you go past.

Ring and see if you can pay over the phone?

I did something similar in Waitrose. I phoned them. They thanked me profusely for ringing, and told me to keep the items, and not to worry about going back to pay.

Oddly once upon a time I think I would have thought nothing of it! But since having my dd I think I over worry about things 😂

Unless they have footage showing the cashier putting stuff into the bag without scanning it?

Happened to me today also, but only for 50cts.

Obviously a cashier error as I only bagged stuff after she had moved stuff from the belt to the packing area iyswim.

I don't know how you'd explain it if stopped though as the receipt wouldn't tally!

@diddl I know I'd have been even more mortified if they'd stopped us in the shop in case they thought it was intentional!

I think it's just been carelessness on everyone's part tbh, we were all distracted by one thing or another 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'll stick some money in the charity box next time I'm shopping and remember to pay more attention next time 😊😊

I paid for shopping with a €10 note 2 months ago and the cashier gave me change as if it was a €20. I didn't say anything and shop there all the time.

I’d be thrilled tbh. Boots are hardly short of a tenner.

I would ring and let them know, so no one else gets the blame for stock disappearing, or just tell them next time you go in. It would probably be too complicated for them to take the money, but they might feel pleased that you had told them.

Honestly dont worry about it, no one will have noticed.

The cashier will have had to explain the deficit, when the till was emptied. She may have had the £10 docked from her pay. She will at least have had the embarrassment of being suspected of theft.
