Didn't pay for items in shop

Just been to boots with my dh and baby. Had 4 items to purchase, dh put them all on the little cash desk/counter and was looking at some toothbrushes on a stand next to us. I was holding baby so juggling baby and getting my card out of my bag and talking to the cashier. Anyway paid on contactless not really paying attention to how much it came to and at that point dh turned back to us, put the items in the baby bag and we left.

We have just got home and I've realised on the receipt she has only charged us for 2 out of 4 items! So we should have paid £14 and we paid £4 😳

Obviously this was an accident but I'm a bit mortified in case they think we did it on purpose or something! We are a small town and I go to that boots a lot so I don't want my name blacklisted so to speak!

I want to ring and explain but dh says that's overkill and I should just leave it as clearly it was an accident. AIBU if I ring? I'm happy to pay next time we are in (can't go back now as dh is going away for work conference and taking the car).

If I get the wrong change I apply the same 'rule' as the shop - if I notice in the shop I will tell them, if I've left the shop then I won't Shops used to have this notice up, I can't say I've seen it recently though.

Kwhatnow · 13/12/2019 20:59

Just leave it it’s not going to put any dent in the company.
Plus you never meant to

transformandriseup · 13/12/2019 21:02

One of the first times I used self service I hadn't realised only half the items had scanned (I scanned them all but only half actually registered) and only realised when I was walking home and looked at the receipt. I was too scared the go back to the shop and I avoided it for some time but nothing came of it. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Pinkblueberry · 13/12/2019 21:03

If it was small business I might say something - but not Boots. A big chain like that isn’t going to suffer or even care about 10 quids worth of items. It’s the cashiers fault, not yours. If you hadn’t checked the receipt you’d be none the wiser.

millymae · 13/12/2019 21:11

You didn’t do it deliberately. If you went back to Boots I’d put good money on the fact that they wouldn’t have a procedure for dealing with such honesty. I’m sure Boots can afford to take a £10 hit.
If you really feel you must do something to make good your mistake why don’t you give what you should have spent to your favourite charity.

halloumi2019 · 13/12/2019 21:11

In my ex retail company, we wouldn’t be able to take payment over the phone, even in a situation like this, so you’d be thanked for your honesty and told to keep the items!

1Morewineplease · 13/12/2019 21:19

Please don’t worry... so many of us have walked out of a shop with something we hadn’t paid for , unwittingly.
I spent a fair bit at Tesco’s recently and was packing all the bags into the boot, in the pouring, freezing rain, at the furthest point in their vast car park( obviously my excuses here) when I suddenly saw a birthday card in the trolley that I realised I hadn’t had scanned. I was immediately mortified but somehow couldn’t bring myself to go back to the store.
The card was unusable by the time I got home, but I still felt embarrassed.
( I’ll whip myself.)

1Morewineplease · 13/12/2019 21:21

PS I did once get charged twice for a bag of sprouts but didn’t bother to go back. So there!

Notthetoothfairy · 13/12/2019 21:23

If you steal, putting money in a charity box doesn’t make it ok! I was once given £20 extra gift vouchers in a shop so I phoned and paid the extra by card.

OverByYer · 13/12/2019 21:28

There was no dishonest intention on your behalf so it’s not a theft.
You could go back but as it’s a large corporation I’m sure they won’t miss it. If it was a smaller store I’d worry that the staff would get penalised.
I once had Tesco send me double of everything on my online food shop.
I rang them and they told me not to worry about it and keep it

HerRoyalNotness · 13/12/2019 21:30

I bought 5 items the other week in one transactions done when they rang it up it didn’t seem enough so I asked if they had everything, did you can this specific item. He counted the items scanned, said yes, I paid and left. When I got home I found that he’d scanned a very cheap item twice. I left it at that. I tried to ensure he’d done it correctly in the store.

TheWaiting · 13/12/2019 21:30

The OP didn’t steal though so that’s ok.

RightOnTheEdge · 13/12/2019 21:34

In your situation I'd just forget about it.
Actually I wouldn't, I'd over think it forever 😆 but I wouldn't tell them especially since a poster on here said they got treated like a shoplifter when they tried to pay for stuff that had been missed.

The thing with the change though I work on a till and they know who was using the til when. They would have to have an investigation if the till is out when they do a count so I would always mention that.

LolaDabestest · 13/12/2019 21:36

Meh there's a difference between blatantly nicking and them making a mistake it happened to me twice recently was really strange as they physically bagged the items and they were largeish items (2 diff shops) did I go back no both around £8 their mistake so didn't feel too bad...I have walked out of a shop with something on top of the buggy a while back could have easily waltzed off but I went back I. And paid think they were a bit shocked.

Sherrybabyy · 13/12/2019 21:39

I would definitely not admit it!

Knowhowufeel · 13/12/2019 21:41

Something similar happened to me, I bought 2 items worth about £40 each, as part of a much larger shop.

On returning home I realised they'd only charged for 1 of them.

I phoned and explained the situation (my conscience would never let me go there again if I wasn't honest!), and they were so 'gobsmacked/ pleased', etc, by my honesty that they let me keep it for free.

I'd also be worried stockroom staff, etc, would get in trouble if stock was unaccounted for, so couldn't have that playing on my mind, so YANBU as I would call them.

AuntyElle · 13/12/2019 21:46

Chickenitalia, tell us some horror stories! 🙏🏼

IdblowJonSnow · 13/12/2019 21:47

I once flounced out of white stuff wearing a necklace I'd tried on, forgotten about but not paid for. It was made out of a few buttons n beads and cost 20 pounds! I'd bought some other stuff and the woman at the till clocked it because I'd noticed her staring at me oddly. Didn't realise til I got home, the tag was massive as well. No idea why she didn't say anything to me but she must have thought i was so brazen!
Was too mortified to return it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/12/2019 21:48

I think sales staff are so frazzled just now. I was also in Boots today, paid with a £20 note, and the lady gave me my change - about £4 - AND the £20 note back! Both of us were like “oh, hang on”, and I gave her the note back, but if it had been busier (it was the pharmacy counter and no queue) I probably would have stuffed the money in my purse and walked off without realising.

I agree with PP - give some money to charity and forget it. You could always buy £10 worth of tampons/shower gel/toothpaste from Boots and pop it in the food bank box?
