...to find the Little Mix/Pussy Cat Dolls style of dancing and dressing cringey?

I watched their bloody awful performance online just now, along with a link someone had posted to a Little Mix video which involved them basically humping the floor... I know they're stage costumes but it feels a bit it all feels a bit try-hard.

AIBU??

Or:
A) jealous
B) Out of touch
C) A hypocrite
D) A bad feminist
E) All of the above

I think that style of dancing is pretty much all you see these days and it's really really really boring.

It's all about being as sexy as possible, seemingly for other people's enjoyment, and not about having fun or interpreting the music.

I saw a clip the other day from an Indian pop music video - and the girl in that was dancing in a modern style but it wasn't overtly sexual. She actually looked like she was having a good time and expressing her emotions as they related to the music - which I took from the song to be joy.

It hit me like a brick because it was so different from what I'm used to seeing and while it was lovely to see it actually made me feel a little bit sad because it feels like creativity in our own culture is pretty much dead.

JolieOBrien · 02/12/2019 16:38

I like them and I think their dancing is great. I would like to go to see them in concert if I can get tickets.

I think that's why I liked Sia's videos with the amazing little girl dancer chucking herself around like a ragdoll - something a bit different!

YABU I think it’s seedy, especially as their target audience seems to be tweenaged girls or younger. Her music is not my style but I really admire Taylor Swift for bucking the current trend of dressing and dancing like a stripper.

MsPeachh · 02/12/2019 16:49

It is odd, especially because the people who actually purchase their music and see their shows are teenage girls. I don’t understand those ugly leotard things they all wear these days!

SandyClawsIsComingToTown · 02/12/2019 16:49

YANBU I mean!

Areyoufree · 02/12/2019 16:54

YANBU. It claims to be empowering, while trying to achieve some kind of male fantasy ideal. It's odd.

MissLadyM · 02/12/2019 16:57

Taylor Swift dresses like a tart! They all do the fishnets/leotard thing which is so dated and naff.

EmmiJay · 02/12/2019 16:57

Can you not dance OP? Is that the problem? Grin joke. They're trained dancers/singers and are entertaining the masses. I see no problem with it.

Namestranger · 02/12/2019 17:01

Lol I love the word naff. They can obviously dance and they/she sang at least a little bit of it but it somehow managed to be naked and boring at the same time Grin

Oooh sorry, I misread Can you not dance OP?

Ironically, I do pole dancing 🤣

😮 Thats dope!

BustedDreams · 02/12/2019 17:11

Yes I agree. There is something distasteful about middle age women dancing provocatively for young/teen girls.

Namestranger · 02/12/2019 17:19

Although I wear shorts, tank top and have barefeet and do gymnasticy type stuff... I find the pleasers, hair flips and tiny pants brigade very intimidating Blush

Pole dancing is one of the most sensual dances, I feel. You don't need the skimpy attire to show off that! Anyone who can do that gets ratings from me

Sunflower20 · 02/12/2019 18:30

Same here. And they don't like wearing bottoms, especially Little Mix. I think Beyonce started that horrible trend.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 02/12/2019 18:36

Personally I think it is to distract from their caterwauling. Grin

SilverySurfer · 02/12/2019 19:34

I'm a bigger BOF than you, I've never even heard of them and definitely wouldn't be watching anything which included them dancing. Grin

Use the channel changing control thingy OP!

SilverySurfer · 02/12/2019 19:35

Just remembered - it's called the remote control lol.

msflibble · 02/12/2019 19:37

YANBU. Grim, creepy, porny dancing that's basically designed for the male gaze and that teaches young girls that demeaning female objectification is fun and cool and normal.
Bleurgh.

30daysoflight · 02/12/2019 19:39

Oh come on flashing your flange while singing badly is surely considered a talent now hahaha

msflibble · 02/12/2019 19:42

Pole dancing can be super awesome, I've seen some amazing and artistic routines online. I just don't know why it has to always be hypersexualised. Ruins it imo

ThomasRichard · 02/12/2019 19:46

YANBU, it’s porn culture and not something I want my pre-teen DD thinking is cool or normal.

Namestranger · 02/12/2019 19:49

Don't ever say that to an exotic pole dancer will you Xmas Grin they get very very very shirty if you criticise it; a lot of them can't abide it being thought of as sporty either. Tbf lots of people like the sportier/dancer style....have a Google of Marion Crampe or Anastasia Skukhtorova. I trained with Anastasia once she's an absolute boss. 😍

I’m old because I really don’t understand how’s it’s empowering to dress publicly in a manner that came about to sexualise women for the titillation of men?
I watched Beyoncé prostrate herself on a chaise longue, squirming around in provocative positions like a bloody sex show as a show of liberation.
I’m sorry, but as a woman, I don’t see how that changes anything 🤷‍♀️
