...to find the Little Mix/Pussy Cat Dolls style of dancing and dressing cringey?

I watched their bloody awful performance online just now, along with a link someone had posted to a Little Mix video which involved them basically humping the floor... I know they're stage costumes but it feels a bit it all feels a bit try-hard.

AIBU??

Or:
A) jealous
B) Out of touch
C) A hypocrite
D) A bad feminist
E) All of the above

Been like this forever. I remember all saints having young men simulating oral Sex on them at the Brits 20 years ago

I can't say I watch many of these kind of things - but I know the sort of stuff you mean. I find it a bit disturbing - I would guess their audience is young to mid teens, and I would really want to see little girls dancing that way. It's as if the only way for women to express themselves is sexually.

And I am a feminist and all for women making their own choicces, but I think young women who have achieved great fame and are answerable to agents, producers, record companies etc etc possibly aren't given a lot of choice in how they dance. I imagine many people are making a lot of money out of these young women.

I saw that very sad documentary a while back - I think it was one of the Little Mix girls who had had dreadful insults and nastiness directed at her online. I think turning young women into sex objects makes them vulnerable and gives out a bad message that there aren't other ways for girls and women to be.

I am certainly a boring old fart but I don;t care.

I loathe watching all dancing except ballet. I think that makes a bigger BOF than you, OP! Grin

Alright lets not do a Beyonce bandwagon. Allllll of these stars do it from Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora etc etc. On the other hand there are lots of stars who do not do it Jess Glynne, Emelie Sande, Adele... You are the parents and can control what your kids/teens see. There are just some parents who don't think things like this are a big deal (i.e. my parents and I've grown up extremely open minded about these things.Grin)

JolieOBrien · 02/12/2019 20:06

I think they are really good dancers and to be able sing at the same time is quite impressive ... here is a live performance

Gatehouse77 · 02/12/2019 20:20

EmmiJay

You’re right they do all do it but Beyoncé is the one I saw.

mrsbyers · 02/12/2019 20:29

I took my niece to see them a few years ago and it was like watching a soft porn film - and I’m no prude

Namestranger · 02/12/2019 20:41

Actually because I know no Little Mix songs and didn't know them from Adam when I first saw they were on the telly at the gym on mute my initial thought was "this is an unusually long lingerie commercial" Xmas Grin must be crap having to go to work in your keks every day, I hope they put the heating on for them.

YANBU, DD loved LM 3 years ago (at 12) but at fast approaching 16 she thinks they are awful and their costumes vile and inappropriate.

doublebarrellednurse · 02/12/2019 21:08

Pussycat dolls were a burlesque show I'm sure before they got a record contract so their image is in keeping 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can see the empowerment argument. They may be meeting a male ideal, can it not be a female one as well? Also men can look but not touch and have no control over it.

I'm kinda sad that in nearly 2020 we are still calling people "tarts" let alone for what they wear. Jesus. Have we not come further than that already?

There are probably far more exciting things in the world to get upset about.

I can see the empowerment argument. They may be meeting a male ideal, can it not be a female one as well? Also men can look but not touch and have no control over it.

How can it be empowering for the female ideal to be determined by what males want? That's literally how patriarchy has worked for decades. Convince women that what they want and need is male approval.
The "look but don't touch" sentiment rings pretty hollow too, when it's precisely this sort of objectification that encourages men to see women as things there to grope and ogle, not people like them.
I agree with you on the tarts thing though, I don't think we should be calling women that in 2019

Namestranger · 03/12/2019 11:51

I love the word tart, but in a friendly banter amongst girls/gay best friends sort of way.
