Where did you hear the term?

WaterSheep · 30/11/2019 20:03

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/relationships/832443-Definitions-please-quot-Cocklodger-quot

A male who lives with his girlfriend without paying rent.
Rent and bills are paid by the girlfriend, the cocklodger relies on the fact that the couple are shagging to continue his residency.
Yeah, that guy Jim doesn't pay Rebecca rent to live in her flat, he's a cocklodger.

RandomMess · 30/11/2019 20:03

A man that contributes literally nothing to the relationship.

ThePolishWombat · 30/11/2019 20:07

The best definition of a cocklodger I ever heard on mumsnet:

Think of a male lion. He is the ultimate cocklodger.
He sits there on his rock, soaking up the sun, while his harem of lionesses hunt for food, take care of the babies, protect the pride etc.

Now translate male lion into human form and there you have it.

WaterSheep · 30/11/2019 20:08

ThePolishWombat

That sums it up perfectly.

a bit of scholarly info on a cocklodger

Only ever heard it on MN but it appears to be a man that contributes nothing or very little to a household financially from what I’ve read. Not sure what the female version is known as.

Thank you all

Not just financially it means they make zero contribution and they think by just having a cock they are worthy of board, feeding, sex if they feel like it, Dad of the year award and so on....

So a SAH Dad that carries out that actual role would not be a cock lodger IYSWIM

They do the heavy lifting of renewing passports and meal planning which is actually the most taxing of tasks so are in fact contributing more than the man.

I would be willing to bet there are some (maybe not many) women who do exactly what a cocklodger does, ie they have a paid job or are unemployed/on benefits, not looking after children, and not contributing to the rent or doing much around the house. I'd guess it is more common in shortish-term relationships but not exclusive to them. I absolutely wouldn't use the term (whatever the female term should be) for a SAHM but I might if there was someone who was basically just sponging off a richer boyfriend.

Both my ex husbands.

I really do think the cocklodger is a bit too common these days, there seem to be so many around.
I've been asked out by a lot of men and have rejected 80% of them for not working and thinking that they will be moving in with me. No thanks.
