Will a dummy sucker turn into a thumb sucker??!

I'm thinking of taking my DC's dummy away (he's nearly 3) but worried he might take to sucking his thumb. I'd rather a dummy sucker than a thumb sucker, having been a thumb sucker myself Grin
Anyone had experience of this or do I have an overactive imagination?

Neither of mine did!

Oysterbabe · 13/11/2019 16:09

Mine didn't. I took hers away when she was 18 months.

Drinkciderfromalemon · 13/11/2019 16:10

Mine did. I gave her the dummy in the first place to stop her sucking her thumb and she reverted immediately the dummies went.

fluffygal · 13/11/2019 16:11

Mine didn't, stopped dummy at 3.

LeighVitoff · 13/11/2019 16:12

4 dc, all had dummies for varying lengths of time and none are thumb suckers.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/11/2019 16:14

I never had a dummy; I was always a thumb sucker from a few days old.

SillyUnMurphy · 13/11/2019 16:14

Eldest DD is a prolific thumb sucker - never had a dummy.
Youngest DD was mad on her dummy but once it was gone it was gone and she never replaced it with a thumb.

HoomanMoomin · 13/11/2019 16:16

Unlikely. Especially at this age. Mine both had dummy and lost them around 2 years old. Never sucked thumb.

Butchyrestingface · 13/11/2019 16:16

Ex dummy sucker par excellence checking in. I chain sooked a dummy till well past my 4th birthday. Allegedly my record was six simultaneously.

I have never sucked my thumb. It looks like a poor substitute for the delights of the dummy, frankly.

apple0pie · 13/11/2019 16:18

No our dummy sucker didn't become a thumb sucker

Troels · 13/11/2019 16:19

Mine didn't at that age. We persuaded him that Dummy was for bed only. So for whil if was tired of feeling under the weather, he would lie on the bed to suck it. He kept it under his pillow. ill about 3.5 then in his sock drawer for emergency use. Never bother with his thumb or dummy again. still has the dummy(binki) in his drawer age 20 odd

Beccaishere · 13/11/2019 16:25

My son was a big one for his dummy, we wasn’t able to get it off him till he was 4!!! Once it was gone though he never sucked his thumb😊

HCAdvice · 13/11/2019 16:46

I had dummies and then went on to suck my thumb, still do, have done for 30 years and my dentist says I have perfectly straight teeth, never had braces either. I do have one thumb smaller than the other though haha

FizzyIce · 13/11/2019 16:56

Mine didn’t .
I was a thumb sucker though until mid teens and never had a dummy at all

TeddyBeans · 13/11/2019 17:02

My 18 month old DS has taken to chewing on his sleeve when he doesn't have his dummy in. Would rather him have the dummy than destroy his clothes

Buyitinbamboo · 13/11/2019 17:05

Dd is 3 and we too dummy away in June. Hasn't sucked her thumb once

TheVanguardSix · 13/11/2019 17:08

Not at all.

3 kids. Two of them dummy suckers, DC1 until age 3.
No thumb suckers here.

GoldenZoe · 13/11/2019 17:11

No

dazzlinghaze · 13/11/2019 17:12

Nope, I loved my dummy when I was little but never sucked my thumb.

Teenangels · 13/11/2019 17:21

I had 2 kids with dummies, 1 didn’t have anything and 1 thumb sucker.
The 2 with dummies never become thumb suckers.
The thumb sucker still sucks her at aged 13.
You can take away a dummy but not a thumb

Dontdisturbmenow · 13/11/2019 17:27

DD started on water bottles, the only thing she accepted, until her brother was born and she decided to try his dummy...at 3. At 4 I decided to take this away, she cried her eyes out, and woke up with her thumb in her mouth which she kept every night until she was 12.

With DS, I decided to let him, with a lot of convincing, decide when to give it up. One night he gave it to me, struggle a bit, but was ok. two days later it was all forgotten and never needed to suck his thumb.

Doveyouknow · 13/11/2019 18:59

Mine did become a thumb sucker after I took away his dummy but he was a bit younger. He quit sucking his thumb at around 4 so it didn't prove to be an issue

FudgeBrownie2019 · 13/11/2019 19:01

Neither of mine did. I was a thumb sucker til my late teens and my Mum used to do her nut about it, bribing me to stop and trying to convince me I'd ruin my teeth. My teeth are lovely and thankfully the DC aren't thumb suckers so Granny can calm herself.

ALadyofLetters · 13/11/2019 19:04

Mine did. Took her dummy at 3, she found her thumb a few days later. She’s nearly 11 and still sucks her thumb.

Elmo311 · 13/11/2019 19:23

Stopped ours at 17months with no sign of thumb sucking here!
