Will a dummy sucker turn into a thumb sucker??!

I'm thinking of taking my DC's dummy away (he's nearly 3) but worried he might take to sucking his thumb. I'd rather a dummy sucker than a thumb sucker, having been a thumb sucker myself Grin
Anyone had experience of this or do I have an overactive imagination?

I had a dummy until age 3, then sucked my thumb until I was 15 Blush

Very lucky I didn't fuck my teeth up.

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 13/11/2019 19:25

Neither of mine did and both loved their dummies

Ostanovka · 13/11/2019 19:28

My DD has sucked her thumb for the last 6 months since I took dummy away, and the dentist has noticed already.

ToTheRegimentIWishIWasThere · 13/11/2019 19:29

Nope, once the dummy went, never sucked his thumb. Dummy till recently and he's nearly 3.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/11/2019 19:31

My daughter was madly in love with her dummy, but when we took it away at 2 she never sucked her thumb.

stoplickingthetelly · 13/11/2019 19:32

Mine didn’t and she was nearly 4 before I took it away.

MondeoFan · 13/11/2019 19:33

No. My eldest DD had a dummy for 4 years and didn't suck her thumb after I took it away.
Youngest DD was born a thumb sucker and still is and never had a dummy

BatEaredFox · 13/11/2019 19:40

Thumb sucking caused me £4k in orthodonticts. Confused

RandomMess · 13/11/2019 19:43

My eldest one didn't convert to thumb, middle 2 were thumb suckers (horrific getting one of them to quit), youngest one started thumb sucking instead so gave her the dummy back - she then ditched it aged 7 but didn't suck her thumb.

teenageanxy · 13/11/2019 20:14

Mine did but she was 3months

yellowallpaper · 14/11/2019 15:36

No, it's one or the other, or nothing at all apart from a manky motheaten blanket

Sausages18 · 14/11/2019 15:45

Nope, ditched the dummy at 2.5 and the thumb has not been deemed a suitable replacement

prawnsword · 14/11/2019 15:47

Am 35 & still suck my fingers sometimes there I said it

The dummy & the fingers aren’t linked. Otherwise every kid would be a thumb sucker

DD naturally stopped using her dummy at about 18 months (maybe the odd occasion after that until around 2). We had no thumb sucking at all when her dummy was taken away. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her suck her thumb to be honest. She did go through a bit of a sleeve chewing stage at around 5/6/7 when she was anxious or nervous- the poor school cardigans took the worst of it.

I think thumb sucking is just one of those things that some children will naturally want to do and others won’t. A thumb sucker might be distracted by a dummy but will revert to the thumb when there is no dummy around. If your child was a thumb sucker before (or alongside) the dummy then there is a good chance they will go back when you take the dummy away, if your child has never really been the sort to suck their thumb then they probably won’t. Not sure there is much you can do stop it.

MepsiPax · 14/11/2019 15:59

My Dd didn't,and she had a dummy up until the age of 3!Blush From what I've witnessed with friends and relatives children, none of the ones who've had a dummy started thumb sucking when they stopped using a dummy. V

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 14/11/2019 16:14

2 dummy suckers who never sucked their thumbs

One thumb sucker who kept going til she was 17, it did damage her teeth and the orthodontist wouldn’t give her a brace til she stopped

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 14/11/2019 16:15

Dh sucked his thumb til he was 11

The first night of boarding school cured him of that

Poor little sod

my2bundles · 14/11/2019 17:17

No. But I waited untill my son naturally outgrew the need himself so that might have something to do with it. He was almost 5.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/11/2019 17:38

My dummy sucker is not a thumb sucker.

Only had his dummy at nap/night time and refused to give it up until the day before his 4th birthday when he took it out of his mouth, said "I don't need this anymore" and put it in the bin
