Boiled eggs on a train court case

Does anybody else feel sorry for the woman prosecuted for objecting (quite vigorously, I admit) to somebody eating smelly hard boiled eggs on an early morning train?

The boiled egg eater is the very definition of a drama queen. According to the story, she had already been told by a different passenger that the smell of her eggs was offensive but carried on regardless.

After being challenged by the woman who was later prosecuted, she pretended that she couldn’t speak English, then told the police about the altercation. Then pointed the other woman out to police when she saw her on the train five days later!

I know who I support, and it’s not the anti-social egg eater. Who apparently had to eat her eggs in a public place ‘because of her diet’.

It's like something you'd read in The Onion.

I cannot believe this actually got to court and they found in favour of the egg-eating piss-taker. Utterly ridiculous.

Some ppl like eating eggs in public, others prefer bananas. However I loathe the smell of bananas and don’t really care about eggs. I know which I’d find more unacceptable ( and it’s not the eggs!).

However it’s totally ridiculous that someone is prosecuted for complaining about other people’s food consumption unless there are signs prohibiting anyeating of anything.

The egg eater should eat breakfast at home.

An old boss of mine used to eat boiled eggs in our small shared office - usually while she was conducting a meeting. I used to have to work very hard not to heave. There is something about the smell of confined boiled eggs that really makes you want to vomit. And I don’t even hate eggs

Not sure how I feel about this.

The police barely act these days so the fact that she’s actually been convicted suggests that there is more to this story, ie the papers might be downplaying the aggression from the woman? I can’t really understand how she was charged etc if it was as minor as reported.

I have had worse happen to me that ended up with no further action!

The other woman sounds ridiculous though, why are you knowingly eating stinky food on a train? And to then speak to the media as if this is her claim to fame

Actually I have just read the linked article which has more details than the one I read earlier, I understand the situation more now.

Food that tastes of something will also smell of something, unless the only taste is salt. Food that doesn't smell of anything is vile to eat unless you aren't used to eating decent stuff and don't know any better, and is almost certainly highly processed and unhealthy.

Eggs are a really nutritious food and boiled eggs are a great way to start a day with a protein hit.

By all means campaign for all food to be forbidden in public except in official eateries, see how far your campaign gets. But failing that you can't expect people to restrict their food to flavourless processed crap if that's your preferred intake.

A guy sat next to me on a train today at 7:30am, even though there were other free seats. He had an egg mayonnaise sandwich bought from some random corner shop, I could smell the bloody thing through the unopened packaging.

He picked it up and I just internally rolled my eyes at the audacity of eating something so smelly so early whilst sitting next to me, luckily he didn’t actually eat it! I think he noticed my disgust

No-one's denying eggs are healthy @UhareFouxisci but they're not suitable for public consumption in an enclosed space. Eating strongly smelling / noisy / messy food in such places is highly anti social. How good it is for you makes no difference.

Seems like a massive overreaction on the part of the accused. There are lots of things that fellow commuters do that annoy me, particularly in the mornings when I'm definitely not at my best, but I manage to avoid flying into a rage and hurling abuse at them.

Seriously! If you cant cope with the smell of an egg for the 99 seconds it takes to eat it then you shouldn't be allowed on public transports. An egg is a healthy snack food, sold precooked and peeled to be eaten on the go.

You just cant verbally abuse a person for literally a smell, what a vile woman, am glad she was fined. As for asking if she spoke English, I am guessing this was just an excuse for her to be racist.

Is this is what people have to complain about, we are in desperate need of a new plague

Just asking - if the lady* had started eating eggs, wouldn't the farty eggy smell be released in the atmosphere already, regardless of whether she continued eating?

I can't believe someone was prosecuted for this. What an unbelievable waste of public money. I feel really sorry for her getting a criminal conviction over this. If everyone who got angry was hauled up in court the system would collapse.

There is something about the smell of confined boiled eggs that really makes you want to vomit.

I agree - eggs and also oranges are revolting and the smell hangs about in the air for ages - takes hours to air the room out.

Certain food smells vile on trains; the confined space and lack of fresh air mean that bad smells are amplified to the point of being offensive or even making you feel nauseous.

Eggs, fish, curry etc really shouldn’t be eaten on trains, whether you brought it from home or bought it at a station shop - even Wasabi or McDonalds reek.

Eating smelly or noisy things in a crowded public place makes you a selfish twat. It's not as if the others on a crowded train could move away.

Though a simple no eating on trains rule would simplify things

I was stood up on a busy London tube recently and the woman next to me took out a zip lock bag with a hard boiled egg in it, shell still on, cracked it and started peeling it in the bag and then ate it. All while standing up, on a moving train, just inches from my face. I love eggs myself but my god I have never felt so nauseated by someone else’s breakfast in my life.

She was cleared of a racially aggravated public order offence.

The fact that she was charged with that seems (on the basis of the article) fucking ridiculous.

Ant believe this went to court. Both of them in the wrong.

I’d struggle not to heave if I sat next to someone eating eggs.
